Michael Jordan hasn't played basketball since 2003...does that mean he can't be someone's favorite basketball player?
Two random examples, but I don't think the longevity of someone's career in one particular field should matter when it comes to them being your favorite. I mean one musical act could put out ONE song or album that you consider to be your favorite out of anyone else's body of work. Heck, I know some people who say Chris Tucker is their FAVORITE comedian from his five-minute bit on Def Comedy Jam!
I want to say that Katt Williams is entitled to his own opinion, but his statement makes it so anyone who says that Eddie Murphy is their favorite comedian can't have their own opinion at all...

A comedian doesn't have to be active in the standup world to be someone's favorite. Eddie is retired. He still can be thought of as a person's favorite. My favorite is Paul Mooney and will always be.

Here's the thing...no comedian can tell me who my favorite comedian can or cannot be. The audience chooses the entertainment..not the other way around. By Katt's own analogy, Bach hasn't released new music in a very long time but that doesn't mean he can't be iconic or someone's favorite classical musician because of it. For me, the number of projects released by the artist isn't nearly as significant as the skill of the artist and the quality of the body of work produced and when it comes to stand up comedy, Eddie is the one of the greatest to ever touch the mic.

MJ could perform feats of athleticism and brilliance not demonstrated by any other players during the same given time frame and earn GOAT status thereby.

I been saying Eddie is my favorite since the 80s. He can't be judged for not doing stand up because he's too busy making movie after movie. It's not his fault that he out grew doing special after special. He moved on to the next level. Katt should receive a write up for insubordination. Eddie is beyond rank in comedy. His numbers speak for themselves.

Eiddie wasted years and years of what could have been an amazing contribution to comedy. Movies were never ever a next level to a comedian .. The real place for a comedian is on a stage and all legends did it this way till the end
I agree, its not the number of shows you do its about the quality of material you. RAW is still the highest grossing concert and that happened in the 80's and people are still trying to catch up to that.

Eddie Murphy was my favorite in 1985, and he is still my favorite today. Just because his success has led him to higher heights, that doesn’t mean he isn’t a comedian. If he released a comic special today, I have no doubt, Katt, Kevin, and whoever else would be sick from the numbers Eddie would bring in. I respect Katt Williams, and Kevin Hart but neither have shit on Eddie Murphy. Full Stop!

Without Eddie there would be no Katt. Richard, Eddie and others paved the way. Eddie's stand-up sets are the blueprint for how to successfully get it done. Eddie saved SNL that was on it's way to being dumped...but as you can see it still runs today. He has even been able to successfully move from stand-up, to blockbuster movies, children's movies, dramatic roles and hell even music. While Katt is talented his body of work will never be compared to Eddie's. Why can't we just appreciate folks, give them their flowers while they are here? Simply say thank you for your contribution and paving the way for me then go sitcho ass down somewhere!

Hell, Patrice O’Neal died in 2011and he’s still one of the most prolific comedians of all time. people watch his videos on TH-cam like they just came out. That's may be the case BUT not necessarily true because Golden Girls which aired in 1985 through the early 90s is actually more popular now than it was when it was first aired. Many young people watch it via streaming svcs. Just the other day, I was on YT and a SNL skit with Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams just popped up out of nowhere, because I wasn't looking for it. I watched it and it as hilarious as the first time I saw it. Many of those born in 1995 and later (like my nieces and nephews) have seen Eddie Murphy's old stand up, SNL performances, and so on, via streaming svcs or on YT.

I will say this. Eddie, along with Richard Pryor, Franklin Ajaye, and others are why I and many others got into the comedy game. I was fortunate enough to meet and work with some of my idols. Here's my take, you CAN have a favorite from ANY era. The reasons someone is a favorite is more than just about their body of work. Everybody has a personal reason for choosing a favorite and that reason is usually very personal to them and not some rating system designed by someone else. Same with music and sports. Now, let's look at this from another angle. Katt is NOT stupid. He is a very savvy marketer. He may have something coming up and needs his name out there on people's minds. He wants to sell tickets to whatever he's doing next. Controversy sells tickets and he knows it. So did he really mean what he said, or was he just trying to put his name out there for an upcoming event? Let's watch and see what happens.

Some things and people are just that good that they stand the test of time and it shows that comedians theses days need to step up and do better if they can’t compete with old sets. I’m 39 and I can say with a heavy heart I have never seen any of Eddies stand up. But I grew up watching his movies. I didn’t even know he was a comedian till later on in life.
Katt is clearly talking about the art form that is Stand Up Comedy. Those who practice Stand Up Comedy are Comedians in his book. Comedic Actors are not Comedians. They are actors who specialize in comedy but they are not comedians because they do not practice Stand Up Comedy.
That’s all he’s saying. People take other people’s opinions way too close to heart. This is his definition of a what makes someone a Comedian Vs a Comedic Actor. This is also his rubric for choosing who is one of the greatests. At least he has a means of gauging and deciding who should have that title over simply following the trite paradigm of, “I like them. They make me laugh.”

I get what he is saying. From pure stand up yes I get it. A comedian would fall under different categories such as stand up, movies, freestyle, roasts, specials, are just a few. Can you stand tall in all these categories then you are the man.
In terms of stand-up alone, I agree with Katt Williams.
If Katt Williams was referring only to touring and performing stand up comedy, then his comment is valid and not out of line.

Bless his heart. The reason comics are able to have long stand up careers is bc of Eddie Murphy's cohort, of which he was the newest at that time. And like Jordan did with basketball, he took the world of comedy on his back-to a whole new level. There used to be a few dozen comics and clubs were no where near as plentiful in that era. I’m an Eddie Murphy fan since SNL, he absolutely can and should be a favorite! Hell The GOAT of Comedy Richard Pryor hadn’t done standup since the late 80’s early 90’s . Yet he’s the GOAT out of 100 comedians white black Latino he’s everyone’s favorite. Eddie Murphy is right up there. Why work hard doing stand up after you paid your dues in stand up club settings from 15-19, hit SNL, then branched off into a successful movie career. I disagree. Kevin couldn't do 2 stand ups and go straight to movies because he doesn't have the range to do so. Notice, every one of his movies up until recently has been an ensemble cast. Also, Chappelle all day! Chris Rock is only funny some of the time

Chris did shows and tackled serious issues as well but not as direct as Dave did. Chris wins in the movie stats department. Dave's stand ups have been less funnier over time but obviously have a HUGE impact. Dave Beat the "system" if you wanna say that. While Chris plays it perfectly like a piano. Chappelle will talk about serious issues then get preachy and you probably chuckle alittle, but Chris will have you laughing all the way through so you don't realize the serious moments in hindsight. Which is why he is a better comedian. Plus overall collection you definitely will laugh through more Chris standup than Chappelle.
You can like your favorite comedian when they haven't put out nothing in a while. Cause what they did put out was classic and timeless, I have favorite movies from when I was a kid, it haven't been no new version of it, but it's still my favorite cause it's a classic and I still watch them.

Eddie Murphy was a master at # 1 TV Shows ( Saturday Night Live). #2 Stand Up Comedy Special ( Delirious is but one of them) #3 Comedy Movies ( Beverly Hills Cops and many others). None of the other Comedians have mastered all 3. This is why Eddie Murphy gets more respect and shine than the other Comedians of now and the past.
