Hurried and worried until we're buried and there's no curtain call, life's a very funny proposition after all.

Boardwalk Empire is not a story about prohibition, It's a story about Life in General

Very true...I became obsessed with the show when random Arnold Rothstein clips popped up in my TH-cam suggestions while on one of my international work trips....which was followed up by killing off 5 seasons on Amazon Prime in 2 weeks back at home....
I see a bit of myself in every character especially as "my own boss" being an entrepreneur now...
Eli Thompson = Opportunistic & extremely corrupt when the urgency of his situation calls for it....
Mickey Doyle = My complacent & yet goofy & charming side
Chalky = Fighter with a chip on his shoulder in me....
Arnold = Savvy in tilting many relationships in my favor....
Luciano/Lansky = Their patience in grinding it out on the DL...while simultaneously faking it till they "make it..."
I thought The Sopranos was in a league of its own until the 6th season became "pretentious filler."
While Boardwalk had it's filler issues in Season 1...the series as a whole despite it's rushed Season 5 due to HBO's demands resonates moreso with the journeys in my life....

Absolutely the most deep and insightful song I have ever heard. No one likes confronting these questions and these realities that we are a subject of, but this song does.
"Though today may be a day of smiles, tomorrow's still in doubt, and what brings me joy may bring you care and woe. We're born to die, but don't know why, or what it's all about; and the more we try to learn, the less we know."
THAT....that is good songwriting. Why can't we have more songs like this nowadays? Ones that talk about things that actually matter, instead of all the materialistic and superficial nonsense modern songs focus on...

Written by George M. Cohan in 1904. One of the most famous Irish-American songwriters who’s ever lived.

Songs from this era are usually light and upbeat. This one breaks the mold in the best way. I keep coming back to it. Captures the human condition in an endearing way.

Did you ever sit and ponder?
    Sit and wonder?
    Sit and think?
Why we're here and what this life is all about?
It's a problem that has driven many brainy men to drink
It's the weirdest thing they've tried to figure out
About a thousand different theories, all the scientists can show
But never yet have proved a reason why
With all we thought, and all we're taught, but all we seem to know:
Is we're born, we live a while, and then we die.
Life's is a very funny proposition, after all
    Imagination, jealousy, hypocrisy, and all
Three meals a day, a whole lot to say,
When you haven't got the coin
    You're always in the way
    Everybody's fighting,
As we wend our way along
Every fellow claims the other fellow's in the wrong
Hurried and worried until we're buried and there's no curtain call
Life's a very funny proposition after all
When all things are coming easy
And when luck is with a man,
Why, then life to him is sunshine everywhere
Then, the fates blow rather breezy
    And quite upset a plan
Then he'll cry that life's a burden hard to bear
Though today may be a day of smiles,
    Tomorrow's still in doubt
And what brings me joy may bring you care and woe
We're born to die, but don't know why, or what it's all about
And the more we try to learn, the less we know
Life's a very funny proposition, you can bet
And no one's ever solved the problem properly, as yet
Young for a day, then old and gray,
Like the rose that buds and blooms
    And fades and falls away
Losing health to gain our wealth,
As through this dream we tour
    Everything's a guess
    And nothing's absolutely sure
Battles exciting and fates we're fighting until the curtain falls
Life's a very funny proposition after all

Great Gatsby parties tend to be quite popular

    • @orbitalbutt6757
      @orbitalbutt6757 2 ปีที่แล้ว

This music precedes Gatsby’s era by roughly 21 years. George M. Cohan wrote it in 1904, Gatsby was 1925. That’s a long damn time in music trends, and if people are playing this at a Gatsby party they ought to know that this song was long since considered old hat by that time.

So much great music from the early 20th century thats been forgotten until Boardwalk Empire revived it. I love the new recordings cos it doesnt have the crackles or grainyness of the gramaphone originals, but I love hearing those same originals too cos Billy Murray etc were great artists in their own right to deserve to be remembered.
