Every Iai and Kenjutsu Ryuha style has its own Kamae stances. But because our Ryuha, Asayama Ichiden Ryu, has 400 years of history since the end of the Sengoku War period, there are 16 kinds with the basics alone. Many of which involve techniques born of the assumption of wearing samurai armor.
So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Asayama Ichiden Ryu, will introduce the 16 basic stances separated into 5 categories. Many stances are unique to our Ryuha that absolutely need an explanation to understand what it’s meant for, so please watch till the end to learn more about what fighting with a katana in armor is like.

Join the online dojo. We learn all of this with greater detail and are observed by Seki Sensei personally and adjustments are made. It’s been a great experience so far.
I've mentioned about Seki Sensei looking so happy and cheerful when demonstrating kata/concepts from his Ryuha, but I've also noticed during the intro he's kinda like "Yeah, yeah, can we get onto the fun stuff??" 🤣 One of my lifelong dreams is to visit Japan. If that ever happens, there's (at least) two people I need to meet and personally thank for giving this American a glimpse into Japan's deep culture. Domo arigatou gozaimasu!
I’m really amazed that Seki-sensei just freely shares these techniques from his school. I learned some Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryū a long time ago through some… uh… unofficial channels but even in their book they are very guarded with their techniques. I realise most things can only be learned by being there. In any case, as a teacher I can see that Seki-sensei is someone who loves to teach and is passionate about sharing his knowledge. His school is also one that was born during wartime, so as a sucker for Sengoku Jidai history I just love these videos. Thank you!
I love the casual kirioroshi-like finishing from jodan in the final part of the video. ( 6:20 ) One of my favourite techniques that took months to learn how to time even semi-accurately in practice. (Of course the opponent here is static, so this can just as well be treated as harai, but it's easy to see how this could play out in a dynamic setting.)
Hello, looking at this with germanic longsword knowledge again:
-Oh, today I learned that the oberhau is called kesa
-I do not know the germanic name of the Hasso guard, or even if it has one but I have seen it used in practice, especially when a duel started drawing out and one side got tired (is probably not a good use). I have also seen it used with one handed sword and buckler
-About getting hit on your head and shoulders in armour; shoulders are indeed difficult to harm, but getting hit on the head, even with a helmet is not something you want. With a lot of two handed weapons it is a legitimate technique against an opponent in full armour to hit him on the head multiple times before engaging in wrestling. That said, if you are facing a spearman (or similar) with only a katana/sword and you are in full armour, I agree that charging to close the distance is probably one of the better options
- In the previous video, a gedan stance got confused for alber (the fool) in another comment. Here, we see Waki-Gamae which resembles it much more, altough the fool can be either like this or with the back of your blade facing your opponent (which is still an edge with a european longsword). The explanation about waki-gamae even showcases a lot of the movements I have myself trained from the fool's guard
Nice, many of the movements utilize the strength of the blade against the weakness. In other words the kata show how to use the hard forged edge of the katana to defend/attack the weak part of your opponents blade and also make the "kill" shot.
Reminds me of my karate years, my sensei back then would be very insistent (with good reason!) on correcting stances before moving on to anything else

It is a pleasure to watch your videos and I never found so much profound information about kenjutsu online. I attended kenjutsu classes at a dojo in Germany for some years but failed to find a dojo when I went to Japan. Kendo is much more popular and nobody I talked to in Tokyo knew kenjutsu at all. Perpaps I can visit your school someday.

I practice HEMA with long sword and I can say, that it has a lot of things in common with katana. And I very want to see the katana fight in HEMA rules, I thing it would be a great experience and a good way to test your skills as a martial artist

Mr Seki Sensei, do you have a video or would you be willing to make a short one detailing how to tie the Kurigata and sage-o wrap around the Saya, one near the top and one near the bottom with the Cord in between? When I first bought my Katana it is all one cord wrapped near the top close to the Tsuba. I have seen some of your videos when you pull your Katanas from your stand, they have them wrapped around the Saya halfway down and near the top at the same time.

Very interesting - the left/right hassou also shows up in some Korean gumbup (forms/kata), so seeing it here is like a look into the true history of how martial arts develop and spread (in this case, it clearly originated from Japanese kobudo and migrated to Korea). I've also been playing Mahjong lately, so when I call ron on an opponent's 8-man tile, I'll be sure to make a sword swooshing sound from now on to remind them that they were slain from hassou no kamae.
@@petermuller3995 You are correct of course, but in this instance, considering the history of modern Korean martial arts, it almost certainly was something adopted from Japan.
It's kinda strange that there are variants of Hassonokamai specifically for being armored. I did a review on a gomai-do yoroi by iron mountain a while ago, and had no issues getting into any of my usual stances. Though I do like the ones designed to capitalize on the armour's strengths and dealing WITH armored opponents.
Does Seki Sensei know something about kasumi no kamae? Every time I see this stance I can't understand the purpose of it.

I have a question, is there any style of using the katana that the fighter just use one hand to hold the katana and the other hand hold the scabbard without using the belt that to hold the scabbard of the katana. I saw that style so much on movies and games but I didn’t see anyone make a video about it. If you need an example of that style, there is a character name “itu” in Shadow Fight Arena use it, you can search on TH-cam. Or if you did make a video about it, can you send me the link of it.( Sorry my english is not very good)
I learned a lot from watching these videos thanks to the clear explanations for each move. I’d love to know if you could explain what happens when two swords enter a “bind” like in European long sword. It’s probably my biggest confusion about fighting with the katana, as I didn’t get taught anything like that when I did iaido before.
The Japanese word for that is tsuba-zeriai. Do a search for that word.

So, I with someone else introduced hangetsu to our sempai in iaido, he said 2 things: 1 dangerous on a 1v1 (we forgot the part with the armour)
2 useful when 2 people are attacking you from the side. Just heard about the stance and could adapt that stance perfectly with a 2v1, basically, he was looking at our feet, the feet that moved 1st was the one attacking 1st. The last time practice/testing/explaining, I tried keeping my front foot still and stepped over, still won...

Am I the only one counting 8 stances and not nine? I keep watching the video over and over but can't find all 9 stances. Straight arms upright, shoulder one, blade by elbow, switch to grip by hip, grip by hip but left side, giving the head to oppenent and the 2 final ones that you can infinetily switch from one side to another. That makes 8 to my count. Which stance I miss?

I am a practioner of european martial arts (HEMA) and I have a question: In your style (asayama Ichiden-ryū), is there any blade contact? Do you ever parry, deflect or bind at all?
Not a practitioner but he parries and deflects in other videos especially when he's using a longsword for the first time, binding I'm not 100% sure. Hope this helps

does asayama ichiden ryu have some influence from Shinkage ryu or Taisha ryu? some techniques are very similar from schools that came from "Kamizumi nobutsuna"
After seeing the Hangetsu stance again, I started thinking that it looks somewhat like you are tired from a long battle. Perhaps you trick your opponent into thinking so, or perhaps the use of this stance comes into play if you are caught in such a compromising position.
Is it odd that these videos help me with my firearms training? The Marines have a similar relationship to our rifles as Samurai did with their Katana. So it isn’t very odd to me, I would love to hear other peoples opinions on the matter.
@@petermuller3995 Obviously a Katana is different than a pistol, which is what I’m training with now, and if you just think about the weapon’s Swordsmanship and Marksmanship are completely different arts. It’s the mastery of self that is seen in all martial arts. When I’m practicing I’m of course thinking of my trigger pull, my stance, the rounds in the magazine and all the technical stuff of making a weapon do something but I’m also thinking of why I’m even bothering to use a weapon when a combat scenario in my civilian life is slim to none. I think about my role as a protector for my wife and daughter. I think about what it is to actually be a warrior and knowing that now that I know many ways to take a life I now have no desire to do so unless absolutely forced to. Weapons training has always been how I meditate, how I center myself in a world I don’t understand. Forgive the long winded explanation but I wanted to answer truthfully. I guess the easiest way to put it is that it’s the warriors mindset that I take from these lessons and try to incorporate in other areas of my life.

One thing to consider with the one handed stance, that may make it more dangerous, is also the weight of the blade. I could be wrong, so please correct if I am, but I believe a sword carried into battle would generally be heavier than ones used in practice such as Iaito. A heavier blade would be harder to swing with one hand.
I believe that the training katana is the same weight as the real katana because you don't want the thing you mentioned (techniques being harder) to really happen. Unless you train with bokken because they can be heavier.
