as a singer lover you should know that , in fact that what you describe has less to do with chords and more to do with feeling and intelligence, what he did is simple yet very clever. He uses what god gave him that is all it is, so find what god gave you and use it , we are all different people with different voices and that is the idea . Don't focus on finding what someone else has but use what you do have. that is being a real artist.
