while the song tells the story of a woman who turned down a marriage proposal, it also implies that the protagonist has a history of mental illness, which the town subsequently stigmatizes in their gossip as "champagne problems."
omygod that's sad if you think about it really. At first, all i was thinking of is what that person who proposed felt when their proposal was rejected. but now that I've listen to the song for the hundred time, i see exactly what you mean. and now im sad 😭
i don't get it. which part of the lyrics that saying the history of mental illness from the protagonist other that "she's fucked in her head". i'm confused.

From the intro of album, this song is about a rejected proposal between college sweethearts! The guy bought the champagne before the proposal thinking he would be celebrating with his friends but instead was rejected (Contrarily to the girl, as she says you never know the answer (if you are ready to leave someone) until someone's asks you on their knees, that is her "champagne problems"). So now no one's celebrating. His sister poured out the bottle he bought before and now he's speechless ("you had a speech but you're speechless"). But while everyone moves on (people told him you'll find someone else), he can't. Hence his champagne problems.
I'm sorta sliding down the slippery slope of Gaylor and there are a few fans who believe that this is about when, I think, Diane Agron proposed to her and she turned it down for obvious reasons.

I took champagne problems to mean a moment that was meant to be celebrated but instead they are using the champagne to drown and forget what just happened. Her saying that one day he’ll find the right girl that will make him forget about her champagne problems is basically saying “one day she’ll help you forget how I ruined what was supposed to be a happy moment.”

The writers of this song are Taylor swift and her boyfriend. Whenever you see a William Bowery, THAT'S him (he's a lit major). I can't believe the talent and power they hold. ☺️🥰 This DOES NOT mean Joe proposed and she rejected him. They're just telling stories 🤍 this is more fictional than folklore in my opinion.

The term champagne problem indicates problems only the rich one has that normal or poor people think it's really nothing. But in this song, I think she uses it as a term for weddings because you pop a bottle of champagne at a wedding. And so I think it relates the whole story and the terms in that way.

I don’t think she was literally mentally ill. I though the mad house line was tongue-in-cheek and the “fucked in the head” line was about his friends insulting her to take the sting out of her rejection. She rejected the proposal because when he asked she realized she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life with him.

Interesting Katy Perry had a song called "Champagne Problems" on her latest "Smile" album.
i cant believe how so many of u got it wrong when the champagne problems in the song is referring to her mental health issues this whole time, which were constantly undermined by her partner & ppl around him and thus the reason for her turning down the proposal
