- The eight Ultimax 18" woofers have been installed! Progress is still slow and sometimes frustrating but I'm still going.
I mention LspCAD in the video, it's the software I will use to design the passive crossovers for the side surround speakers. Here is a link to LspCAD... www.ijdata.com/...
Demonstrating the Ultimax woofers, the BasX amplifier was being driven with 1 V p-p or about 0.35 V rms. According to the specifications the BasX 4-ch is capable of 130 watts all channels driven into 4 ohms. Also, an input of 1.2 V (the spec sheet doesn't specify peak or rms) to drive to full output. So each woofer pair was being driven with somewhere between 40 and 50 watts or let's say about 25 watts per woofer. I'm not sure I want to even try to see what happens when I put the 1000 watt ICE modules in the system. (500 watts per woofer) Maybe I'll just get an XPA4 to drive the woofers instead of using the ICE modules.
My wife told me to stop watching your videos because she said I'm getting too many ideas from you. Love how is coming along!

So cool to see the progress of this theater!!
Should have youthman come visit and do a video on everything when done. 👍🏼👍🏼
I wish I could enjoy a movie in this theater. The sound in this cinema will be a once in a lifetime experience.
When it's finally done, if you are ever in the Austin, TX area, let me know, we'll watch a movie or two in it.
This is a really cool sub setup! Hilarious how the wood panels resonated in the attic at 14Hz
Very smart to couple the woofers together with the threaded rod. Your theatre room is inspiring!
Nice work! It's coming along nicely! Love the drivers in the ceiling 👍
DAMN this is looking good !!
Dude, i just made a design for my home theater and it I just so found yours and it is almost exactly the same haha. From the line source speakers to using the 2x4 hds as active crossovers to using the ultimax 18s. The only difference is that i plan on doing is a 8 subwoofer DBA and i will be using a 2 way subwoofer system with the Dayton Audio PA460-8 above 45 Hz. And all of that will be set to Auro 3d. So I admire your setup. Keep up the work!!
Don’t think I’ve ever seen subs in the ceiling Especially 8 18” Dayton Ultimax ones 😮👀😳
You’re definitely not in the AV world.
@@P2Feener305 😂🤣😆
WOW.
Nice set up!!!!!
This is the most unique setup I’ve seen, absolutely beautiful. I’m curious to see how your projector handles the low frequency. I say that because I only have 4-18’s, 3-15’s, 4-12’s and two butt kickers and I have to wedge small screwdrivers in my projector to keep the image from vibrating off the screen and the focus from blurring beyond recognition. I’m hitting around 130db at the couch and by my count you’ll be at 28 subs total so the potential for high db is not just a probability. Very impressive sir.
So far I haven't seen a problem but I don't play it that loud and I don't run the bass all that hot, just 3 or 4 dB hot. I like all the surface area and woofer capacity for distortion reduction more than for being able to play it loud. It can definitely do that if loud is what someone wants however.
IB manifolds FOR THE WIN.... with one pair of IB24s I had to remove all my kitchen cabinet doors and several light fixtures throughout the house
For the record they are nearly flat down to 10hz .... -3db at 10hz
SO much work to be done ... 😅
Infinite baffle design. Bet they play deep
I would love to here a concert dvd in this theater I bet would sound awesome
What do you do for work if that’s ok to ask? I only ask that as you mention a lot of traveling in your videos.
Field Service in the semiconductor equipment industry. I primarily work on lithography tools but also laser annealing tools. I mostly do system installs so I'm always traveling to different customer sites. Before Covid it was mostly international, mostly Asia. These days seems like it's mostly Oregon but I did make three trips to Dresden, Germany last year. We do have things coming up in Ireland and Japan so I'm hoping to get back into more international travel.
If you use low power on the woofers eventually you will overdrive the amp and burn out woofers, better off with ice power modules driven lower.
My two cents.
Great cinema, love your work!
I do have some ice modules, at least two maybe three pairs of the 1000 watt version from Parts Express. In a pair one has the power supply built in and the other piggy backs it. I could use a pair on each side and let those power the Ultimax's and use that Emotiva channel on the 15's. That way each Emotiva channel is only driving four 15's instead of eight.
Thing is, they don't need much power. The Ultimax's are used in IB and only operate near the resonance frequency where the impedance and efficiency is significantly higher. With about 10 watts per driver it just about shakes the house apart.
The 15's are open baffle but do require some power above resonance especially close to the top of the frequency band they cover. It doesn't take much power at all to drive them to excursion limits at the low end of their band. Still, that's not a bad idea, I might think about putting the ice modules on the Ultimax's and give the 15's an extra Emotiva channel. That's definitely a good thought, thanks!
as a home theater installer I had to CRINGE when I saw all the loose boards you've been crawling on ..... its literally a disaster waiting to happen
If I fall through the ceiling I don't have to climb over all the duct work to get back to the pull down ladder;-)
