    Very nicely done, Graham. I don't recall ever seeing any MG ads when I was younger, buying my MG new, but it goes to show how far out they will go to market a little car that's just fun to drive. My mother like it!

    I found that the guy driving a sports car getting the girl to be very true in the ‘70s😎 It certainly was true of my Mustangs!
    Once again, thanks for the great videos!

    A great step back in time, showing how things have changed. Being born in 1950, and falling in love with the BGT when it first appeared I remember some of these ads. Almost all car ads in those days, 60s and 70s were pretty much targeted at men. Must have something to do with how we think. Whether it was a tire shredding muscle car, or a little great handling sports car, we men would think that our adrenalin rush would somehow make us more desirable to the opposite sex.
    And after all, all car advertising was about sex, wasn't it.

    Graham, when I first subscribed at the outset of your channel, I wondered how on earth you would keep coming up with interesting things about MGBs. But that just illustrates my lack of imagination! You keep doing it and this is another gem. Well done!

    Nice work again Graham. Living in Canada most of the ads are new to me. We got the US influenced ones which I removed from magazines and filed away in a big binder. I look them over now and then. I admit to being a bit partial to the "your mother wouldn't like it" series. My modest collection also includes some dealer ads and brochures. My car is a '74 and I have a few good ones from that period.

    Another cracking video Graham. Always love watching your channel especially as I grew up with MGBs and Midgets a common sight on the roads and as a teenager longed to be able to buy one (never did at that stage though!).

    At University Motors we once lent a customers Blaze MGB roadster to an ad agency for a MG campaign. When he saw the finished ad, being driven through the salt spray on a beach, he understandably went mad, and we had to suppy him with a new car.

    The ad at 10:04 is visually exciting, to the point, fab. It gets MY interest. Nearly as captivating is the one at 11:41. I bet they were both terrifically successful in boosting sales.
    Frankly, they were better days then, in many ways. So I don't agree with your assertion that there has been "progress". If the MGB were made now they would probably call it the MGPC.

    There is nothing wrong with marketing products to their target male market with advertisments men enjoy. These days ad agencies are run and staffed by women, who create awful wole advertisment tailored exclusively women and weak men.

    The ad nauseum theme the presenter uses - about MGB advertising not being "P.C." - gets quite tiresome, quite quickly. MGB advertising targeted men - who obviously bought the majority of MGB's, and - in the U.S. - the advertising featured was run in male skewed magazine titles, such as Road & Track, Car and Driver, Motor Trend...as well as Esquire, Sports Illustrated, etc. You also have to consider these advertisements in the context of the time in which they were created, and the values of those times - not some smarmy review from a woke / "enlightened " P.C. modern context. The advertising is enjoyable - the narrative - not so much!

    • @ClassicMGB
      @ClassicMGB  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. My apologies for the narrative, but the idea was to point out how things have changed and how advertising in particular has changed over the years. What was perfectly acceptable back then just isn't now. Younger viewers that didn't live through the era, particularly females, are quite shocked at what was acceptable and, I think, would consider this progress. I take the point that most advertising was run in male-oriented publications but this in itself was a sign - did they believe that only men should drive sports cars and that their girlfriends were completely happy to be seen as an "accessory"? I think not...

    • @bryanweston7737
      @bryanweston7737 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ClassicMGB It's advertising - intended to address those who are the potential BUYERS of sports cars back then. Don't get that confused with whether they thought women should DRIVE sports cars, or not. I'd bet the manufacturers hoped women did like these cars, and wanted to drive them, but the fact remains, it was predominately men that were the target prospects to BUY these cars. In the same way - you need to consider YOUR target audience for this video - which is more than likely MGB owners and enthusiasts - not young, female viewers. I lived back in those times - MGB ads in the car books got noticed - guys talked about them, as they rose above the "clutter" of many other competitors and their rather bland advertising efforts. I also spent over 40 years in automotive advertising in the U.S. - advertisers had research to show how well noticed & read their advertising was, and they also had their car sales data...MGB's did quite well here - for a long time - so their advertising must have been working rather well for them!

    • @ClassicMGB
      @ClassicMGB  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. I think you're missing the point = the video was designed to highlight differences in advertising over the 18 year life of the car, and how attitudes have changed. I'm not sure its just young, female viewers realise this... Anyhow, it's good that its stimulated good debate :-)

      @@ClassicMGB Perhaps it is just a difference in humor across the pond. What got me was with every ad displayed there were negative comments, basically belittling them. But I found the ads wonderful, thank you for posting them.

    • @ClassicMGB
      @ClassicMGB  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sorry if it came across like that - I do think that some of the ads were very clever but would probably have the opposite effect these days... times change - I guess whether its better or worse depends on your gender, age and ethnicity... :-)

    • @897firefly
      @897firefly 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ClassicMGB Age, gender and ethnicity? Me thinks you doth protest too much. They are ads for an old wonderful little car that has a cult like following of all ages, genders and ethnicities. Enjoy them for what they are,
      nostalgia. You don’t have to be in a particular group or use a special pronoun to do that.
