I swear every single episode I'm like "This is a solid 10/10, no way someone can make a better hack than this", and man am I wrong every time, lol.
Can we just appreciate for a moment how this game manages to teach you almost every core gameplay mechanic in about 10 seconds without using textboxes/dialogue?
1. You start with half a heart. Half hearts exist.
2. Platforming is layed out in a way that you can't miss the mushroom. It heals one full heart.
3. You fall into water and a blue bar appears. Oxygen and health are two seperate things.
4. Gray wall indicates plattforming significance.
5. You run into green mushroom. It heals your health entirely.
After you collect the golden mushroom is the first time the game uses textboxes to teach you about mechanics. Everything up to that point was explained by just gameplay. It always amazes me when games manage to do that.
Truly a display of intelligent level design! And truly a magnificent hack!
I love how the game started with Mario getting up like he fell. I’ve never seen that before.

@@bleu-oni8476 I dunno, the fact that the lasers were alternating walls does indicate to me that wall running is at least something to consider doing. If not, wouldn't lasers be active on both walls the whole time?
This actually is a major hack, so many custom elements and bosses. Incredible for skilled players! Can I somehow play this myself?

I really hope he comes back to this hack and fleshes it out, I definitely got the impression there was more he wanted to do but he ran out to time.
@@Tech_Marauder this goes for most people (myself included) because the given deadline and actual deadline for submitting hacks were VERY far apart. i dont think falco will go back to this specifically (idk, ask him not me) but he'll definitely do stuff in the future like this :)
@@Tech_Marauder I had an idea for a metroivania style game a while ago, and decided to take that idea and scale it way down for this contest. I might still make my original idea at some point, but I'm mainly focusing on developing romhacking tools right now rather than making more hacks.
Last time I attempted to post a link, TH-cam shadowbanned me because I hadn't posted many other messages so it assumed I was a spambot since I was positing a link. But if you're in Simpleflips' discord, you can search my posts (falcobuster) to find a download link for the hack. Alternatively, you can wait until the winners are announced, and all the hacks will be available then.

@@entruh4520 yeah they mean what vivian said the talisman represent: fire water wood metal and earth. Wood is the odd one out because it means tree so not exactly plants in general.
@@octaviousenterprise Well, actually the reason why Wood seems like the odd one out to you is because they are Hanzi, not Kanji. They represent the 五行, except for the last one (earth) which was 士 instead of 土, probably as a typo.

The double jump is so polished and cool. Mario changes animations depending on whether you're moving backward or not, and the "yippee" just makes it feel like a blast. Super well done game

Yeah, he missed one hidden in sunken temple (the first dungeon). It's probably the hardest one to find.

There's also "Faraway Voyage of 380 000 Kilometres", "Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion", "Reach For The Moon, Immortal Smoke", and "Pure Furies ~ Whereabouts of the Heart". Not to mention The Bamboo Forest of the Lost itself.

falcobuster actually nailed this god dam, great level design(hard but fair, fun golden shroom challenges that are optional), great bosses (even a pretty sick miniboss), perfect music usage and excellent taste with several touhous and waterfall used perfectly AND he even shared his romhacking tool, so fucking dope, this competition has been sick AF but this one takes the cake for me so far.

Wow. The platforming looks so great in this!!! All the features look so polished! The text helps create the story but is used sparingly! The bosses, the environments, the textures, the length, the bonus, the planned backtracking w/new powers ---- Ah wow!! This has truly amazed me. This is the first time I've watched a competition hack since becoming a SimpleFlips fan 3 years ago where I said I MUST play this.

I love the idea of giving Mario power ups throughout the game, maybe something like a fire punch or being able to use any cap if you have “magic” or something this mods been on my mind all day haha

FalcoBuster has created a bunch of killer abilities that fit into Mario's moveset perfectly that greatly enable his future ROMhacking efforts, and it's working extremely well. I'm looking forward to seeing more hacks utilizing the wallrunning ability. It's such a natural fit.
I (Falcobuster) added Wallrunning as an asm module in Bowser's Blueprints, so people using it can add wallrunning into their hacks without having to known anything about ASM coding, so maybe we'll see some other hacks start to use it too.

For those unaware, the talismans you pick up in this hack are the same as the monster attributes in Yu-Gi-Oh (except for metal, but it makes more sense than dark or light would)
Meaning Simple probably threw bowser into Yu-Gi-Oh Prison at the end of the hack
EDIT: looking into it more, it's actually the 5 classical Chinese elements. But defeating bowser by throwing him into Yu-Gi-Oh Prison is funnier to me.
