A few months before IDOL came out people started calling BTS westernised because of how big they were getting in America and how they were collaborating with more Western artists, talking about how they were losing their native essence, how they were “sell outs” and no longer "properly" Korean, etc. So they came out with Idol and made it unequivocally Korean, and not only just Korean but as you can see there are also some African and Indian culture in the motifs of the video and aesthetics, including in the choreo. People also started to complain about them using “too much green screen and CGI”, so, of course BTS decided to give them a huge middle finger and made the video as bright, loud, obviously CGI and obnoxious as possible. The song is basically them telling the world they can say whatever they want, they’re uniquely them and their hateful babble is inconsequential to their global success.
I would suggest watching the explanation video by DKDKTV either on the channel or in your own time. It explains the significant symbolism in this video. Every part of this MV has meaning. Almost all of it is Korean cultural references. DKDKTV is a good way to get insight into the video.
    Korean cultural references:
    The bunny in the moon
    The dancing
The the ribbons and the dancing animals
    The hanbok
Even the lyrics and the music.
    All of it has meaning.

Hi! This song actually used to not be one of my favorite BTS songs, but after seeing the DKDKTV explanation video and checking it out live at concerts this flipped completely - it's one of my favorites live and it is also a song that means a lot to me. It is pure genius, but I have to admit I didn't fully catch it at first. So if you have time, I'd love to see a reaction those when possible.

  • @OT7_DopeOldARMY

This song is absolute FIRE in concert. I recommend you watch that, even if it's on your own time. Any time I play it (in the car, in my house, while working, while walking outside), it just makes me excited. The meaning behind it just adds to the song. It wasn't a favorite of mine at first, but now I love it a lot. Imagine 50-60K fans all screaming "You can't stop me loving myself" at the top of their lungs. It's a whole experience, I promise you.

This song is the culmination of the love yourself album trilogy. LY: Her is about finding your one true fated love. LY: Tear is about that perfect love being torn apart. LY: Answer is about realizing the answer to finding love - loving yourself first. This song is celebrating that epiphany (see what I did there, Army?). “You can’t stop me loving myself!”

As a fan from South Africa, this sound from them is so up my ally. I totally fell in love with it the first time I heard it. They incorporated a South African genre of music called "Gqom", which originated in a city called "Durban" in South Africa in the early 2010s and was actually very popular between 2016-2019. They really executed it perfectly and all armys from South Africa absolutely love this song. It' s a song that celebrates self-love and incorporating this genre was just perfect because we normally play songs of this genre when we are celebrating something, whether it be a wedding, a birthday, graduation, etc....so it is so fitting. They really are a genre of their own.
There was so much going on in the MV, lol, that it's overwhelming...but there's a lot of symbolism behind almost every scene. The overuse of CGI is a response/clap-back to people who are complaining about them using too much CGI(which...they don't), the traditional dances, clothing, props, folklore(the bunny in the moon), etc, is a response to people who were calling them sell-outs, saying that they are becoming too westernized. Even their wardrobe has meaning. The filters that RM used in the beginning, the airplane, the shark, the giant BTS's....everything has a meaning and story behind it. Nothing is random.

if i'm correct "ddaeng" is also a bts response to the public complaining that bts no longer sounded korean ... i absolutely respect that you labeled idol a "festival" song b/c live idol stages always feature traditional regalia/dancers/costumes/instruments and you're right on - it's like this mad celebration when its live ... u r always fair, honest and appreciative in your reactions and that's awesome ... "ddaeng" (a rapline track) & its dkdktv analysis is excellent btw ...

BTS just had a free concert in Busan this past October 15, their last group concert before they do their mandatory military service, after which they'll reconvene as a group in 2025.
The highlight of the concert was *Run BTS,* one of the three new songs from their anthology album "Proof" that was released last June. It was already a fan favorite when it came out, but the fire choreography and the high-energy performance took it to another level. You should check it out, man.
Also, you should also check out the rest of the Cyphers, since you're a rapper.

Hi!... I am an army of 58 years old, I entered the world of bts 4 years ago, I liked it from the beginning but to add value to the world I was entering, I had to learn a little about the Korean culture, and know the history of the group BTS , since its inception... so you can understand what they want to convey in their music. they compose through their own experience and knowing that, you manage to capture how magnificent their music is and how fantastic these 7 guys are... I use tarducer, I don't speak English...

This song live changed my life haha. Hearing Namjoon yell “PUT YOUR MOTHERFUCKING HANDS UP” during “you can’t stop me loving myself” was life affirming. I blast this song in my car anytime I need a boost of energy or when I’m feeling hype. I absolutely love the meaning in the song and in the video. Even if you don’t react to it, I highly suggest watching the DKDKTV explanation so you can get a full understanding of why this song is special to ARMY (especially Korean ARMY) and BTS.

Not all, but with quite a few BTS songs there is more than what meets the ear. If there is a DKDKTV channel explanation video (there is for Idol) I would advise you to watch it. This is a clapback to haters who said they were becoming 'too westernised' so they went all out with Korean references & outfits etc. Anyone can react to their music and get views/subscribers, but I think to become ARMY you need to understand them and know what they are really trying to say. That is why I rarely subscribe to reactors who just review their videos and meme compilations, but I still watch as it is so much fun.
One of their best live performances of IDOL was the 2018 MMA's. Good luck!💜

Well you're really showing your intelligence first you talked about how many damn views this video got not your damn video it's never gonna get billion views I'm talking about BTS viral music video then you claim that you would only listen to this at a big party or special event just like you never eat steak except at a big important event! Maybe you'd never eat steak except that a big important event but in my family we had big elaborate seafood dinners because we went to the wars when the fishing boats came in and got a whole bunch of crab several cases of fresh crab the event was cooking the crab and eating it.
The crab wasn't something we ate at a special event the crab was the special event just a random weekend breakfast or lunch where we fried seafood and grilled it and ate it we always had abalone salmon tuna scallops oysters clams mussels in the freezer and on a whim we would pull some out and have them on the weekend it wasn't any big special weekend we just decided we wanted to eat the seafood. Basically your opinion on when you would listen to BTS how long idle well you're definitely not BTS army fan are you. You're only doing these videos these BTS reaction videos because they're the biggest group on the planet and you're trying to make money off of their content there videos live performances variety shows. Whereas a true fan is watching this video over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again because they like it not because it's some damn special event how the hell do you think it got all those views Einstein oh by the way. I like your video so much not! And your appreciation for BTS's artistry in this video not ! That I gave these wonderful approving comments and that like not and I did not delete every one of your videos refuse it reject that that was suggested to be on the right of my screen after I clicked on this video not. There was probably 100 video suggested to me most of them yours and after I rejected every one of them and the other videos which gave me indigestion and basically disrespected my intelligence there was only about three or four videos left.

Lol the video is intense. This song was written/video design when BTS was growing popularity in the West and was constantly labeled as losing their Korean roots & culture by the media & K-pop community so the guys said hold my soju and threw every Korean cultural reference & very kpoppy video style as a “is this Korean enough for you?/eff you” to the haters.

I think it's better if you hear the song first before the mv. Especially if you don't know the meaning behind the song. It's what happened to me before. The mv is too bright and too cgi, in addition, there's lots of hate comments about them and I felt at that time that it's all true. Take note of course, I'm not a Kpop fan that time, nor an army. I was just part of the general population who loves yo listen to music I like.
Saw this on TV, in a show where top best top 10 songs were shown. This was number 1 that time when I first watched it. Sad to say, did not really like it. Until many years later where I discovered another song of theirs that I totally fell in love with (PROMISE by JIMIN) SO I... the rest is history, and I like IDOL NOW.
It's so fitting, a celebratory song. And I love them for it.

It is very energetic song this is true I liked it from begining but I see that it grow on people.
Live are great, this song in concerts ah amazing! It was also starter for one of their tour, great way to start concert.
AH and it is great for cooking like you chop your veges 😋😉
And you are right bc this song is celebrition so feel you got is right, it is to celebrate self love, their path and their culture.
And it is song fck you to haters, people watching and looking for their miss step, media, etc, actually they used in video a lot of things that people given them hate about...
Like cute behavior - so filters, like some clothes that they wear, like too colorful or to much promotion in US that they are americanising (is this a word?), (so they used a lot of symbols of their culture, like clothes, accesories, myths, dances, etc), and they also shown by it that they are simply international but always are korean...
The music is edm and hip hop with some korean instruments, old korean rhythms and africana beat.

'Idol' is a song that is shown to haters (that they live criticizing them, speaking ill of their beauties. That's why they made this song with several "references" to their criticism and offenses. That's why the MV is quite "glaring, chaotic and exaggerated in colors". That was their intention...they always take the criticism they get and put it into their music. This is so awesome!!!

Regarding when to play this song, for me in particular, it's whenever I feel like I need more motivation to do something I'm not fond of doing . For example, like cleaning my house or doing laundry. I put this on and I forget how boring those chores are LOL. It's my happy vibe music.
