Thanks for the video - a great review.
The engineer in me always ensures I run anything in as stated - any instructions are usually added for good reason and its always best to do so, both for longevity of the item in question and to make a proper judgement on its performance.

Hi Robert, thank you for the encouragement. I agree with you, I do always enjoy testing to see how an engine runs straight out the box, but wholeheartedly agree that a full run in is essential. Keep well, Hylton

fun fact, although this maybe a side note, if you think that the yellow livery in the Highland Railway and the “improved green” on the LB&SCR is similar, then its because William Stroudley worked on the Highland before LBSC. His designs reflected it too.

    • @ExplosiveCookie
      @ExplosiveCookie หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The yellow livery is actually a mistake made in the 1960s based on an incorrect recollection - the actual livery was green as seen on Rapido's 1890s condition version of the loco, however the lining and layout out of the livery is that of Stroudley's Improved Engine Green which was applied to earlier Highland locos.

A fabulously striking locomotive in its own right, and it's tailor-made for your layout.
The genuine joy and pleasure you experienced from the moment you received it and then unboxed it, reviewed it against the white background, and then ran it was palpable: I felt it coming through YT all the way over here in Bungay, Suffolk, UK!
As a GWR BR(W)/LNER BR(E) enthusiast, it's not a loco that has been on my radar. But as a Welshman, I guess I could make an exception, since it was designed by a chap with a very Welsh surname, and it would have hauled Welsh coal when working the "Jellicoe Specials" for the navy during WW 1...
Nice to see Ladderman pop up.

Not that the loco needed much selling, but you certainly sold it.
I've never been one for DCC (especially not DCC sound, which ruins the peace of a train room with little tinnie shrills and flange screeching) but far out, you captured the sounds of this loco so well with your spectacular driving. Hey Hylt, the moment you opened the box I thought 'what an amazing looking loco' no wonder you are so excited. I find myself smiling also at your enthusiasm. I took a look around and there are quite a number of liveries seem spoilt for choice. I have been sticking with mostly BR to present but I have to say the HR Yellow really is stunning. I know I am not running a Highland Railway (although someone did think I was with the backdrop looking very much like the highlands which I thought was awesome) so maybe there is room for it, I am so tempted. And then Double0 turns up Oh how I laughed, fantastic. Excellent video Hylt, probably your best to date imho. Just got mine today as well, I was unpacking it as I watched this!
I'm impressed yours arrived in S.Africa so quickly. Like you I was also tempted by the light green livery, but my wallet said No.😥 Perhaps If I manage to save up enough before they sell out, although there are several other locos I have my eye on, not to mention the evolution coaches. Can't have them all unfortunately, though I do have two of Rapido's O1s on pre-order.
For those who want an idea of it's size it's quite small for a 4-6-0, more like a mogul, which it could easily have been if the front driving wheel had been shifted forward slightly. The running plate in front of the boiler is also needlessly large. In fact comparing it to my Hornby K1 the overall length is about the same with the boiler being more slender and not as high, the cab is also a bit smaller. Side-by-side the K1 is more bulky and looks more powerful which of course it was having benefitted from an additional 50 years of locomotive development.
It does look quite big compared to my pre-grouping 'Brighton' Hornby Terrier, so was large for it's time, but small compared to Era 3 locos. The colour blind engineer's green livery is a bit lighter than the Hornby Terrier's whereas the chassis is a slightly brighter red on the Hornby model, but they still look great together and of course whilst they used the same livery they ran on two different railways so minor differences in the shades of paint can be expected.
I agree the box is very nice and made of nice thick card and I like the two separate ice-cubes for the loco and tender.
N.B. Running in. Rapido actually recommend an hour in each direction at varying speeds. In my experience some locos are more 'bound' than others and so may need a bit more or less than the manufacture suggests.
Very impressed with mine and hoping the O1s are just as good. They looked it at Not Warley.

The light green livery was definitely tempting, but I know the wallet struggle all too well. I hear you on the evolution coaches as well-so many tempting releases, and sadly, only so much budget.
The O1s are an exciting prospect too; it sounds like you’ve got quite the collection shaping up with two on pre-order!
Enjoy running your new addition, and as always, thank you for watching. Hylt

Very pleased with the loco, which I'm running with a couple of Hornby Caledonian coaches, like some railtours from the 1960s. It looks a real treat and runs very smoothly.

The connection between tender and loco is tricky ,and I think I’ll keep,it permanently coupled . It is the loco release of the year . You can imagine the crew going over Drumochter in the cab , sheltering from the elements . Have fun with it !

Great review as ever, I got the same version myself it arrived on sunday. I was very frustrated by the tender conection myself - it took me over an hour to get them together without breaking anything. Not sure why Dapol and even Hornby can manage a simplier solution. Other than being a tad fragile its a lovely model. My tip give the wheels a clean, mine were filthy. Cheers Shaun

After a few models which have left a bit to be desired with assembly issues and other niggles, its good to see that Rapido have been able to deliver the Goods with this one. A flangeless driver on models like these never looks right in my minds eye, though I expect that Rapido have done so because the real thing is/was so equipped. I've yet to be disappointed with a Rapido locomotive that I have bought, though I do know of and have seen first hand other peoples models that have left a lot to be desired from previous releases (15xx particularly). Though not of relevance to my interests, the very high quality of this one gives me a lot of confidence in Rapidos forthcoming Midland 483 class.

Some thing that might be considered for these locos is a gun barrel load and carry wagons. Possibly a 16 inch, more likely 14 or 12 inch, ammunition shells and propellent bags. Any thing else WW1 and Navy. Bunker fuel (coal and oil used at this time). It is more likely bunker oil would be moved by ship which is very nearly crude oil at the start, in later years refined and specified.

This looks amazing! I can’t wait for mine as I have ordered the same version!! I live in Canada though and we are currently experiencing a postal strike, so I have to wait for the strike to end before mine gets to me (along with a Y7 and Jinty that I have had on order for a while that came into stock but haven’t sent because of the strike, and a pre-owned Webb Coal Tank I got a good deal on 😂). This looks lovely though, and when everything gets to me this will definitely be the first model I unbox! Also, once you couple the locomotive and tender is it nessasary to uncouple them? Mine is DCC ready and I will be adding my own decoder later, as my layout is currently wired for analog but I am going to convert it to DCC later on
