    The top button manually refreshes the e-ink display. e-ink uses no power to display text, once refreshed.

      Depends. Mesh networks works well only if you have enough neighbourhood nodes to make a reliable network.

    See, I'm not looking at this from the standpoint of disaster/emergancy gear (To be blunt: Most e-comm/disaster channels I've seen come across like they're hoping for the endo f the world while not really having a plan beyond 'look at all this cool STUFF I have.'
    So, seeing something like this that can have interesting applications where I personally don't want cellphyones involved, and feel like the low bandwidth isn't really an issue appeals. Granted i would always want MORE bandwidth, but take what i can get and use what's there.

      I agree with you. I do feel a lot of channels hype and focus more for the SHTF scenarios while completely overlooking real life scenarios that happen everyday. Our area has gone several weeks without power due to an ice storm and even a large ef5 tornado that has taken out a large portion of a towns infrastructure. So I like to look for ways and means that help during those times and can be used daily to supplement and even like you suggest replace modern tech. Thanks for the great message.

    Pretty interesting little devices! I'll have to take a deeper look at those. Thanks for sharing.

    Just found out about this device and this world of mesh and off grid coms. If I can’t find this device yet, what should I go purchase to get involved and learn with to dive in?

      Honestly I would just study the videos online until they start becoming available again. Such a high interest sold them out quickly. Watch the video I have dealing with line of site and start making a plan. Then slowly start implementing the radios as they come back in stock.

      The one store said there December sales were up 500%. There is such a demand for them now too. You might want to do an email alert on the pages.

    I built 5 or 6 of
    the
    larger ones. For me, no keyboard and having to rely on an unstable cell phone app to type messages back and forth makes these not worth it. It needs to have a usb port that will support a plug and play keyboard.

    • @Disastercommunications

      Most have usb port, but t-deck is only one with keyboard. What OS are you using for the ap?

    "...use encryption legally..."
    Are you not in the US? Since when is using encryption illegal!?!

    • @Disastercommunications

      For ham radio encryption is not allowed. For business band radio and some other modes, encryption is allowed.

    • @sorinl8467

      Also other frequencies are not legal if you don't have licence.

    • @Disastercommunications

      @@sorinl8467 all the frequencies available on the LoRa board are license free. The ham mode, where you have to input your call sign,allows for higher output power. Similar to the old Arden network when we flashed the firmware on the old wifi routers it would open a couple other frequencies in the 2.4 ghz range that the non ham mode had available given less rf on those channels.

    Can we trust the electronics coming out of China?

    • @Disastercommunications

      The military doesn’t. A certain security camera and network switch got banned from all bases do to backdoor discovery.

    • @michaelkaliski7651

      Since pretty much all electronic equipment comes out of China, there isn’t a great deal of choice. Really complex systems may have flaws which may be exploited, but that isn’t any different to stuff coming out of the US or Japan. Most exploits require some level of physical access or a rogue operator installing illicit software in order to be successful.
