How are we not calling it Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Heide? Tempo: The book on Purdue is give a medium press that forces the first 10 seconds off the clock before they get into their offense. Purdue is willing to accept this to minimize mistakes, so there is not major push to beat the press and then force the issue to take advantage of the advantage. Hence, fewer positions as it goes deeper in the shot clock. But Purdue's efficiency is their reason not to panic at losing those 10 seconds from the medium press so long as it's not resulting in turnovers.
Nervous about this game, hopefully losing horribly at Marquette prepared us for Penn State’s style of pressure defense. Re: tempo, Purdue is usually better at executing in the half-court than their opponents, so slowing it down can be beneficial. Like the Bama game and Illinois last year- we forced them to play slow and it made them uncomfortable. Smith needs to control this game.
Crazy Purdue fan… Your takes aren’t bad. But I think Purdue wants to make a Statement here. Paint knows how Penn St plays, and he doesn’t want a repeat of the MU game. He’s had days to get them ready. This is a Fletch, Cam and CJ Cox legacy game! Fletch with 22, Cam with 18 & Cox with 14 to avenge his horrible Rady’s Tournament performance. Purdue 83 Penn St 78
@ I hope I’m right, but I feel it. I feel like the lineup switch has taken hold with this team, and the roles are now clear. CJ & Harris are about to break out, and I’m crossing my fingers that Furst continues to get aggressive! #BoilerUp
As a Purdue fan, the last few years of being an elite team (something Purdue has never really experienced previously) has taught us just how hard it is to stay on top. Everyone has us circled on their calendar. Home, away, neutral-I believe Painter and his crew will put the team in a great spot to succeed. That said, Purdue will take some more lumps this season -likely will lose another 6-8 games by my guess. This absolutely could be one of them.
The road to the big ten has always gone through W. Lafayette (historically most titles)I don’t see that changing as long as Painter decides to coach. The difference is now Purdue is in the national spotlight and Painter, players and coaches are just now settling into our roles in that regard. I think we have one more year of top 5 top 10 play for sure. Will we stay elite recruiting freshman or will the transfer portal be the answer? Interesting times
I think tempo is partially driven by the fact that Purdue's offensive transition is primarily predicated on Heide and Colvin finishing at the rim. Due to rebounding limitations on this roster, those two have to crash the glass which prevent them from beating the other team down the floor.
Greg… that Ole Miss team shot the absolute lights out from 3. Little dude was taking side step into stepback 3’s over TKR on the perimeter and they were somehow falling. You remember the Bama game where they hit 14 3’s in the first half vs us last year?? Ole Miss did that for the whole game basically
My opinion on the tempo is a couple things...guards are playing Braden full court all game and taking 10 seconds off the clock before Purdue gets in their sets. Purdue also has to work a little harder/longer to get to their good shots.
The tempo point is interesting. The defense is definitely part of the reason why they aren’t playing fast. Their system doesn’t generate turnovers and they’re getting fewer stops than last year and giving up more offensive rebounds, so there are fewer transition opportunities. I also think their pace may be slower because they’re having to work harder for their offense. There’s no easy button like there was last year for a quick bucket to Edey.
I think it comes down to the center spot and staying out of foul trouble. If TKR gets Yanic if foul trouble, he'll probably go for 30. If TKR gets in foul trouble, it'll be hard to get open jumpers without an inside threat.
Their biggest lead was 11 and Penn state still won by 13 and scored 100+ Purdue only beat Corpus Christian by 17 and northern kentucky by 22. So who cares. Penn state won the 2nd half by 19. Don't judge a team based on one PFW run 😂
For both teams with a great point guards, this will be a statement game for the winner....that's why we play the games. I believe Baldwin will push Smith all the way.
I mean, Purdue lost at Northwestern to start out the Big Ten last year, followed soon after by a shellacking by Nebraska. Then also Purdue isn't last year's team, so there's that.
We lose this game by 8. Praying it isn't a dumpster fire for Purdue. I think there is an aspect of failure on painters part to prepare his team for road games. Only positive here is we already were spanked on the road by a similar team. Now we know, at least in theory, what to avoid. Great takes guys. Greg great hat!
I do respect Penn state & their make up as a team… comparing them to Marquette is insane based off who PSU has played though. This will be like the 4th or 5th toughest game Purdue has played this yr so far & this is by FAR PSU’s toughest Also purdue fortunate to beat ole miss…. Ole Miss was fortunate to hit most 3s in a game in 8yrs and keep it close… perspective perspective
I believe to be able to run would require taller tougher 4 man to secure more rebonds. Now Branden is hanging along the baseline to grab rebounds instead of being an quick outlet to run.
This is going to be a very close game. Think it will come down the last few minutes. I'd take Purdue to eek it out but, wouldn't shock me to see Penn State take it.
@ damn you're right, I'm gonna cancel my internet service, throw my laptop out the window and put my phone in the garbage disposal. No coming back from this
Unfortunately Berg blows. His ass needs to be "given the talk" to transfer after this season. We have to get rid of Berg so we can use that scholarship on a good player.
@@jackfekete4123 let’s be real Jack, Purdue is soft. Lost to Marquette who struggled against 300+ Kenpom teams 🤣 Purdue has also struggled against crap teams too.

he said it in a public interview before the season
@@nolanwitsman9986 well I saw it from the clip where Robbie asked Braden about it so I must have missed the OG interview. My bad
Ace Baldwin absolutely dominated Braden Smith tonight. There is no comparison between the two. Smith stinks without Edey.

This was my thought too. No elite rebounder means everyone's crashing and no one to leak out and run with Braden.

Several Big 10 teams have 8 or 9 very good players. Over half of the conference teams have more than 2 good bigs
Only one team has Matt Painter
Gonna be a tough close game for my Boilers... always tough to win on the road...we got upset in first game last yr at NW.
