And thank you for this first meeting with the Master (Ustad). Rahat comes from a long line of Sufi musicians (his uncle Nusrat was the most famous in his time). Their style, Qawwali, is part of Indo-Pakistani music. The instrument that Rahat manipulates is just a harmonium (with a bellows and a keyboard, like a small organ) widely used in all styles of Indo-Pakistani music. The word "Raag" is used here as the title of the song for tourist reasons. Actually a Raag (or raga) is a melodic framework for any piece of Indo-Pakistani music, whether in the style of Qawwali, or Dhrupad, or Khayal, etc. A Raag evokes a specific feeling (here it's undeniably joy), is played at a specific time of the day (morning raag, evening raag, etc.), has characteristic melodic patterns, etc. Of course, Indo-Pakistani music is served by Muslim (often Sufi) and Hindu musicians. But Qawwali is more specifically Sufi. We can see a lot of common points between Qawwali and the flamenco of French and Spanish gypsies (probably a common origin, but... never tell that to the Gypsies, they don't like to hear that). Of course, Uncle Nusrat was more traditional than his nephew Rahat (who is often fusion), but modern Qawwali is still Qawwali, and it's still very beautiful !
