I don’t know about swapping the 320 to 335. You should be okay, but the transmission likely won’t bolt right up. You can use real OEM to cross reference the part numbers. One buy did a 118d to 135i swap in Europe you can probably find the forum postings out there. He went into detail about the electronics. I think your biggest hurdle will be the transmission.
I have a pre lci E90 330i, and I also have a almost perfect N54 135i donor coming…is it doable if I swap everything from the donor? Do I need to get any extra parts from the parts suppliers to make it work? Thanks
I’d compare parts number on real OEM.com between the models to see if the driveshaft is different. Most likely the driveshaft and differential is different. In which case you’ll need an e90 n54 driveshaft. If the car is xDrive you’ll have to modify the chassis to mount a RWD engine as the xDrive chassis has a notch for the transfer case. The transmissions are also different. To my knowledge the DME/ECU IS tied to the CAS and FRM modules. There was someone in Europe who n54 swapped a 1 series hatch a few years back. If you can find the forum post he might have more details on the electronics. Hope that helps!
Hey brother can you please answer this question for me I have a 328xi do I need a n54 xi as well or I just swap the oil pan from the n52 to the N54 engine Thank you
I don't know if the oil pan is the same part number. Try checking realoem.com If it's the same then you should be able to just swap the oil pan. the XI transmission and RWD transmissions are different, and I don't know if the N52 transmission will work with an N54.
I just purchased a wagon with the intention of doing this swap myself. I am not too worried about the mechanical side of things, but the coding and electronics seem really intimidating. I own a 325xi w an N52 (sedan) is it possible to do an engine swap for an N64 engine? I recently broke my front drive shaft which blew a hole threw my oil pan. So I’m trying to figure out what my best options are. I have a friend who is willing to sell me the N54 engine for the swap have just heard from quite a lot of people it’s not do able..... curious on your thoughts as far this being something I can do or not.....
Darin Mills long short it is doable. I swapped all the computers so without doing that not sure. The N52 transmission and differentials are different so not sure if you can bolt on to an N54. Unless the bottom end of you motor is damaged or the motor is gone I wouldn’t attempt it without a complete donor car.
The DME is mounted on the right side of the engine bay same as the n52. The CAS and FRM modules are in the drivers footwell. I had to reprogram the ABS and xDrive modules.
Jefferson Sanchez definitely doable! If it’s not a wagon and you can buy a 335 I’d recommend going that route. There are earlier videos on my channel showing what can be done on the n52 without swapping the engine. I’d recommend considering that first
I'm in Canada. I'd suggest just buying a 335 unless you found the perfect donor car. If you're hell bent on it just swap pretty much everything over and you're good!
Ian Rand it’s complex but you don’t need to fabricate anything. It does bolt in but there are several components that are different. The radiators, the intercooler. The driveshafts and transmissions etc.
rackintosh thank you so much, i had the radiator and such in mind. but never new if have to switch the transmission and driveshaft, is that much different than the stock ones that came with the n52?
Thank you for this I've been think of trying it myself I have a 2011 328i xDrive wagon and a friend is offering to give me a 08 335i but it's the 2 door so my question is will it work
Tony Martinez there are differences between e90 and e92 suspension wise that might make it difficult. I’m sure it’s doable. But you’d have to look up the part numbers of all the drivetrain components to see what’s the same and different. Also coding will be challenging. If you can find a clean e90 you’d be better off.
DK Brezzy the turbo rebuild set me back about $900. Plus $300 for the turbo install kit even at $1,200 it’s cheaper then new turbos. Plus with the upgraded cores you get a bit more power over stock. If I had to do again I might have gone pure stage 2 but my primary concern was reliability over power.

celis281 read through the comments. The more you have for the swap the better. If you can just get a 335 it’s probably not worth the headache to swap unless you’re dropping it into a wagon. Long short computers, and entire drivetrain and you should be alright.

I swapped out the whole drivetrain. Being xDrive it was more important. If you’re RWD you might be able to get away without changing it but you’ll want to see how the ratios compare.
N52-N54 is plug and play as the DME goes as it’s in the same place. N55 you’ll need to extend the wiring harness as the DME sits on top of the engine. I pulled the DME, FRM & CAS modules as well as the keys from the donor car. Might be possible to mix and match but you’ll need to do a lot of programming.
Brother I have to give it to you that was a awesome job so you saying if I install the key module from the donor I don’t need to reprogram that’s what I’m trying to avoid here in New Jersey hard to find someone that does programming I would love to do a swap I have been working on bmw for 6 years thank you

Does the DME and CAS module plug straight in to the harnesses? Also do the ABS and traction control modules still work?
The DME is mounted on the right side of the engine bay same as the n52. The CAS and FRM modules are in the drivers footwell. I had to reprogram the ABS and xDrive modules.
Love it :-)
Whats there a need to code anything? Or is just swapping over the mods all you have to do?
Beamers & Beyond any computer you don’t swap will need to be coded.
I took everything from the donor car to keep things simple.
I have a 08 328i and i want to install a n54 you think it would work
Jefferson Sanchez definitely doable!
If it’s not a wagon and you can buy a 335 I’d recommend going that route.
There are earlier videos on my channel showing what can be done on the n52 without swapping the engine. I’d recommend considering that first
Will or could this work on my E90?
What’s up with the hw wiring did you swap out the whole harness
David Henry didn’t have to change the harness. N52 & N54 have the same one.
Will it pass emissions?
I've been wanting to do the same swap to my e91 LCI Xi. Can I get a any 335i donor or does it have to be XI?
You can do a RWD conversion but you'll have to do some fabrication to mount the transmission as the XI and the RWD chassis are different.
Where are you located I wanna do the same for my e92 has a n52 and I have a donor 335i
I'm in Canada. I'd suggest just buying a 335 unless you found the perfect donor car. If you're hell bent on it just swap pretty much everything over and you're good!
is this a very complex thing to do? to just swap the n54 in? does everything sort of “bolt up” like a N52 would?
Ian Rand it’s complex but you don’t need to fabricate anything. It does bolt in but there are several components that are different. The radiators, the intercooler. The driveshafts and transmissions etc.
rackintosh thank you so much, i had the radiator and such in mind. but never new if have to switch the transmission and driveshaft, is that much different than the stock ones that came with the n52?
Do u have to upgrade the ecu ?
I just changed out the ECU FRM & CAS modules along with the key from the Donor car.
Good to know! I’ll keep that in mind as i intend to swap my wagon too!
How are the mamba turbos holding up?
It's been a year and a half and so far they are holding strong. No issues.
Ok so how much did the build cost
The cost of the swap itself was about $5000 give or take.
Is that cheaper then getting new turbos
DK Brezzy the turbo rebuild set me back about $900. Plus $300 for the turbo install kit even at $1,200 it’s cheaper then new turbos. Plus with the upgraded cores you get a bit more power over stock. If I had to do again I might have gone pure stage 2 but my primary concern was reliability over power.
did you absolutely need to swap the gauge cluster??
Erick Navarro not sure! I did it mainly for the oil temp gauge.
@@rackintosh i appreciate the response, I’m doing the same swap right now. So far I got the pure stage 2 turbos the 500hp kit from burger tuning, includes a list of shit and new coil packs from precision race works. Trying to make her a daily monster
how much would you charge for this work?
Looking for a shop to do the engine swap, and a general service you're probably looking something like 30-60 hours depending on their familiarity with the swap. Really difficult to say.
could i swap my 2011 328xi n51 to a n55?
It can be done!
Is it possible to swap a n54 in a 07 328i if so what am I looking at part wise if possible
celis281 read through the comments. The more you have for the swap the better. If you can just get a 335 it’s probably not worth the headache to swap unless you’re dropping it into a wagon.
Long short computers, and entire drivetrain and you should be alright.
rackintosh awsome well Thnks for the helpful advice greatly appreciated also Thnks for not been a douche about the question I seem to find the the bmw world is full of a lot of I mean a lot of snotty dicks that’s just trash talk to idea of swapping o the n52 hell I got so much lash for asking a simple ...is there any company that makes a turbo mani for the 328i...Lmfak the world suddenly ended when that was asked lol but again Thnks for the helpful Info
Did you have to change the diff?
I swapped out the whole drivetrain. Being xDrive it was more important. If you’re RWD you might be able to get away without changing it but you’ll want to see how the ratios compare.
How does the wiring portion work?
N52-N54 is plug and play as the DME goes as it’s in the same place. N55 you’ll need to extend the wiring harness as the DME sits on top of the engine.
I pulled the DME, FRM & CAS modules as well as the keys from the donor car. Might be possible to mix and match but you’ll need to do a lot of programming.
How would I go about programming that and what about the rear end i have a 335i sedan and want to swap my engine inside a 328i
Hey is it a straight swap for a 06 330i?
Pretty much, yeah. The more similar the donor is the easier it is.
What about the ecu?
ECU, FRM, CAS and key are from the donor car
Hi after the install do I need to reprogram computer or the key or everything is plug and play thank you
Aj Torres I swapped out everything.
I’m sure you could keep the key if you reprogram everything
Brother I have to give it to you that was a awesome job so you saying if I install the key module from the donor I don’t need to reprogram that’s what I’m trying to avoid here in New Jersey hard to find someone that does programming I would love to do a swap I have been working on bmw for 6 years thank you
If I install everything from donor car including key and key module I doubt I need to reprogram anything but you the expert because you did it already
anyone know about swapping from n52 to n54 on an 08 328i sedan???
It should be the same process just not sure on the wiring
It’s there anyway I can get in contact with you?
You can reach out on Instagram!
Can I do this with my 07 328i coupe?
Definitely, though if you can buy a 335 coupe I'd recommend that!
@@rackintosh well 335 motors are cheaper then buying one for sure..
Would it be the same if i did it to me e92 328i sulev? N51 .. found a n54 donor
Sorry! Just seeing this. Yes probably the same process.
Did you ever do this swap? I am thinking of doing the same. But from what I have seen it looks like we will have to swap the gas tank.
@@jay2exclusive no I never did the swap I turbos my n51 instead 😂
@@kavintruong1106 do you think the turbo was worth it? How much power are you putting down? I'm trying to plan for mine now. I did a ZF8hp swap on my car and its so much more fun to drive but it still feels likes its lacking power.
What n52 upgrades did you have before it went? And what do you recommend for it?
JamesD123 you can check my other videos for my N52 build but.... 3 stage intake manifold & tune. Catless headers, 335 exhaust conversion. AFE scoops. And that was pretty much it. Made a huge difference and the car pulled harder throughout the rev range.
Hwy
Not bad engine swaped to shit block . Or ultra shit N55 .
Wastegate rattle lol
please swap mine for me
Ian Rand you’ve got this bro
What’s your Instagram
Gary Pankhurst same as my TH-cam. @rackintosh
