The Hornets were mediocre but since he was their best player and highest paid, he was the furthest they'd get and his limitations weren't gonna get them far
yup. hornets definitely made the right call not signing him to that supermax, let them reset their stagnant franchise, increase their lottery odds and get lamelo

Unpopular but true, he was a shoot first point guard who was inefficient, frankly. And his defense suffered from lack of size.. When we moved on, it really was the best thing for the hornets.
As you said best player but not enough ceiling to pull a team up. He never got teammates involved well or setup teammates the way lamelo is (which frankly I’m surprised by). I was always frustrated close game after game kemba would choke and not get the bucket (at least in the nba).
Horrible take ..
He’s the best player in franchise history, and the teams problems at the times were not on him. He couldn’t lead a contender by himself and the 2nd best player he ever had playing with him was Al Jefferson for like 2-3 years. If he had any help at all, we could have been a consistent playoff team. Now, that being said, moving on from Kemba ended up being the right move, but he was not the reason the hornets were bad during his tenure.
Sadly Jordan made the right decision Kemba didn't deserve the max, plus he is looking pretty washed in NYC. hope things get better.

As a rapper from Charlotte, we loved Kemba- he’s our all-time scorer! But something was always missing. We moved on graciously and after a yr, we have that in LaMelo. All the best to Kemba fr 🙏🏾💯

I don't think MJ regrets not paying him and letting him leave. Lamelo looking like that player he has always wanted for his team in this Modern Era of Basketball. Hornets are fun to watch.
He's had some bad choices in drafts and scratch your head situations like giving Batum max, I also question Gordon Hayward's contract but someone has to be get paid.
But the future looks bright for them as long as they keep Lamelo happy and build around him.

He came in free agency when Kimball was here right before he signed with Boston and we had just lost Linsanity and Lance and he was told he'd be behind sorry asz Kemba, so he went to Boston then when Kemba got there he realized again why he didn't sign with my hornets. KEMBA WOULDN'T LET OTHERS SHOOT . REMEMBER WE HAD BIG AL and big al was barely getting the ball until Kemba got hurt then Al started scoring 30-40pts out of 2 games a week. KEMBA SUCKED
As a Charlottean and someone who watches a lot of Basketball including the Hornets. Kemba deserved the max, but the Hornets did the right thing by letting him go. The team was bad yearly and wasn't going to progress with Kemba on a max contract. They team needed a hard roster reset, which they did and they are thriving now.
They’re not going to progress with Lamelo either. They should have kept Kemba and built a better team around him. I don’t see Lamelo leading any team to a championship.

There was no reason to move on from him and start all over with a rookie. They just needed to build a better team around him. You wasn't going to be able to get free agents to come to CLT to play with him. LaMelo is not only a better prospect but he can attract better free agents to come to the team. Trust me Kupchak (GM) and Jordan made the best decision not signing Kemba.
@@teezee1000 Kemba had great relations with other players and was actively recruiting at the all star games. The issue is, the hornets lack funds to bring anybody in and they overpay average talent consistently. They couldn’t build a team for kemba, they probably won’t be able to build one for Lamelo. You could argue both ways that lamelo won’t be better than Kemba or he will be, but the bottom line is that the hornets aren’t a good franchise and if lamelo becomes anywhere near Kemba, he will be wasted in Charlotte.

You’re much loved here in the Queen City and we’ll always think of you as one of our own, no matter what jersey you’re wearing at the time. We named our family dog after you, and that’s meant with the utmost respect. Charlotte had so many heartbroken fans when you left, but we knew you had to do what was best for you. sorry the truth hurts... but kemba is washed. since leaving the hornets, he can't stay healthy & missed a ton of games the past 2 seasons. in 15 games so far this season... he's only avging 12 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts. that's not even close to his last season in Charlotte, 26/4/6.

It worked out better in the end. The Hornets have LaMelo and Kemba is one a better team than the Hornets (maybe not rn tho)

A totally good move by Charlotte, I’ve been saying since 2015 he needed to go. He didn’t get teammates involved. If he didn’t have a good night the team lost. And then when he had a good night everything else had to go right, and it didn’t. His defense is porous, and was kinda covered up well by Clifford’s defense. But once the league started opening up the three ball more, Clifford had never figured out how to consistently defend this modern nba. Kemba kept getting beat and he hasn’t gotten any better on that end.
And then you wanna talk contracts and not having anyone able to get there bc he was taking too much money with batum and zeller and mkg?

He has to make it to the playoffs and get past the first round, and then maybe I’ll be convinced. But that still remains to be seen! 🤷🏽♀️ And oh yeah, he has to make an all star team! Kemba was an all star! Holler at me when that happens!

Quick question, how can Kemba say "I didn't wanna leave Charlotte, but I left because they didn't offer me a max contract?". To me, that makes no sense and it's hypocritical. Firstly, not getting a max contract is not a sign of disrespect. He's still getting a huge amount. Secondly, why give a max contract to a guy on a team that dosn't sell that much jerseys or seats for a team that doesn't play on national or international TV. That wouldn't be a smart decision from the team. So in conclusion he left Charlotte (that he loves so much) for more money - which is okay, but he could be upfront about it.
PS: I don't think it worked out that well for him as he's now making less than he was making with Charlotte...

It's tough, Kemba's a good player and a nice guy, but the Hornets made the right call not giving him the max. They would have never won with him and would have had to pay him an absurd amount of money for little production, Kemba leaving also allowed the Hornets to talk fully and get a high draft pick, which turned into a franchise player in LaMelo Ball. Kemba has just had some bad injury luck and being a bad fit on that Celtics team, better culture fit, but not a good basketball fit. Really, that Celtics team needed a pass first playmaking PG rather and a scoring guard, not fully his fault.
Charlotte look a lot better without him.

You know when he says it's not his talent and then he speaks about his knee your knee has to do with your body which has to do with your talent
But injuries can be healed with rehab. That doesn’t take away from his talent. A lot of players in the league are playing banged up. It’s the nature of the game. They just didn’t want to pay that man, and he made the right decision.

Some of these comments are hilarious. This was the wisest move the Charlotte hornets have made, prior to drafting LaMelo and it’s still being ridiculed by ridiculous people. Hornets had a chance to sign Carmelo when he was cut by Houston and out the league and needed a home. At that time Charlotte was close to making the playoffs but needed another scorer what better choice than a Jordan Brand player that's a veteran/future Hall of Famer that could've helped Kemba late in games
As a hornets fan at the time of not offering him the max I was pissed but in retrospect is was absolutely the right move. Still one of if not my favorite all time hornet

Drafting MKG instead of Beal, drafting Kaminsky instead of Booker, giving Batum that extension...so many terrible decisions made by the Hornets. They have young talent now but as a Hornets fan, I'd take Kemba pre knee injury with Beal or Booker over this current team. It was an insult not offering him the max after he was 3rd team All-NBA and made the All-Star team three times. Best player in franchise history who wanted to stay. It would've been better for them to not offer him anything and just let him go than to offer him a lower contract than he deserved.

@@sauceunlimited We were in the playoffs and one win away from the second round in 2016 with Kemba and a team that was nicely built around him. The organization failed to continue building around him so when he was at his best, the supporting cast was bad. That's on the front office. If they had done a better job, they would've been able to keep Kemba and have the team in the playoffs.

Kemba was never a max player. After Charlotte quit babying him and he walked, he’s on his fourth team. This wasn’t MJ cheaping out. Kemba is way overrated by people that didn’t watch him every game for every season. He’s an A level person but a B level talent.
