Everyone seems to think that Terry Stafford version of Suspicion was before Elvis'. Not true and he didn't write the song. It was written in 1962 by Doc Pomus and Mort Sherman. Elvis recorded it in 1962. In 1964, it was released by Terry Stafford and became a big hit. I always preferred Elvis' version and thought Terry was copying Elvis' voice and style. To me, he was one of the first imitators and impersonators and that is why he never had another hit record.

Better vocals: Elvis. Better recording (with the horns and the female voices): Terry. My hat is off to Stafford and the people who worked with him on his recording of "Suspicion." "... Elvis Presley version
One of 25 songs written by Pomus and Shuman for Elvis Presley, "Suspicion" was recorded by Presley on March 19, 1962, in Studio B of RCA's Nashville studio and issued on Presley's album Pot Luck released on June 15, 1962. In April 1964, when the Terry Stafford version of "Suspicion" (recorded in May 1962 as a demo) was in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100, the Presley original was given a US single release with "Kiss Me Quick" as the flip, and it was "Kiss Me Quick" which was the favored side, reaching No. 34 nationally. "Suspicion" peaked at No. 103.

Terry recorded this song in May 1962, as an unpolished demo, one month before Elvis's version was released on June 15, 1962. Elvis B side version of Suspicion peaked at #103 on the charts. "Kiss Me Quick" was the A side and carried Elvis' version of Suspicion to #34, . The release date 2 years later of Stafford's, isn't a factor as far as trying to sound like Elvis because Terry couldn't have heard the Elvis version at the time he recorded it. . Therefore he wasn't copying Elvis. He sang how he sang. One interprets someone else's material. As far as being a hit, Terry charted at #3 ,this is Terry's song. Not bad for a demo. . . No matter which one you like better. Also, Terry wrote hits, for others, Elvis Never Wrote a Single Song

Elvis was a great performer and singer. It's Stafford's first hit, so he's very unsure of himself, and he's not really used to performing. Elvis also recorded for RCA who had top of the line recording studios and equipment. That being said, I like the Stafford version better. I think the backing instrumentation and the chorus line is better. It's more fitting - it just sounds like it belongs to the song. Elvis stylizes the song a bit too much. He tried to punch up his vocal line a bit to make something of it, while Stafford lets the song do its own magic by singing it straight. The recording quality on Stafford's version is poor, but I prefer the way he and the orchestrator did this song. I give it to Stafford 9 to 7.

Although Terry Stafford never established himself as one of pop music's most enduring luminaries, his version edges out Elvis' characteristically superlative version of the same song. Not a bad accomplishment, Terry, to have edged out "The King", even if it was for only one time in your life. May both Terry and Elvis rest in peace.

Terry has the ladies back up singers and beautiful melodies and the sound is much better! I loved Elvis Presley and he has so many hits to count and he’s the king! Give terry some credit because his voice bland better with the ladies back up and melody and smooth and his only hit! I have to give credit to a person when he’s doing good! Elvis changed the rock and roll forever with hits like hound dog and don’t be cruel and love me tender and many more…over 149 billboard hits and 40 in the top ten alone and 18 went number one! Elvis is the king! But today terry’s song was better!

You are allowed your opinion of course.
"Suspicion" by Terry Stafford broke the Beatles' monopoly on the top five spots on the chart by rising to #3
His follow-up, "I’ll Touch a Star", rose to number 25 in America.
Elvis' "Suspicion" peaked at No. 103.

Oh yeah! This is the one I've been waiting for! Be back to this comment when you're done. 🤗
    -----------
    >I am disappointed, but I respect your opinion. This was first released as an album cut on Elvis, and that was a huge mistake. Stafford heard it, found out it hadn't been released as a single by Elvis and did his lukewarm cover.
He cannot begin to compete in terms of vocal dynamic range with Elvis. That said, it isn't among Elvis' greatest numbers, but it was definitely hit material and Stafford's version compteted successfully with the Beatles in 1964! This was a tremendous error by Elvis in not releasing it earlier as a single. Stafford seized an opportunity. After it was too late, RCA finally put the original version out on a single, as a "b-side ." Stafford doesn't even sing the title of the song because . . . he can't. Go back and look what's missing from Stafford: the word "suspicion."
Here's the story of what happened. It was a very bad mistake on the part of both Elvis and RCA. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspicion_(Terry_Stafford_song)
