  • So its been over a week now since the Dose of FMG went in to sort the Costi in my pond.. This video looks at wheather it worked this time or not??
Fly Larvae have increased over the last week or so in my filters. Could it be since not using the FOK product? I need to makesure its not blocking my filter pipework...🤔
Plus my filters really needed a cleaning off after a period of FMG doseing so I need to get them up to standard to improve the quality of the water.
Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and SHARE the video...
    ENJOY..😁😉👍

100% confirm your comment about having a Chagoi. I'm sure I have bored people senseless with me banging on about mine!
"Brown trout" has had a tragic and unfortunate life right from the start and is now disabled. He has been brought back from the brink several times, and is still a character and the main man in my pond 🤗

I managed to purchase 5 toughened glass shelves off £b@y 12” high and they just fit 2 to each side and 1 at the end for a cheap alternative to bespoke jump guards. Upright 4”x4” wooden posts & secured with ballastrade clamps.stopped them jumping over the side

Hi Andy just a little idea !!! I have used 2 inch waste pipe to make frames for my netting as i have to keep mine on all the time (due to a massive heron problem ) they are light and they look a lot tiedier as you can make the nets nice and tight 🤔🤔🤔 just an idea 👍👍 keep the videos coming and don't worry your not the only one having problems with parasites this year

    Hi Andy
With regards to netting your pond i made a frame out of 32mm black waste pipe / elbows ( from Wickes ), i then pulled the net tight with black cable ties and used 32mm black spring cilps ( off EBay ) so when i want to remove it in anyway i can either unclip it all or just one side and it rotates in the spring clips for ease of access.
    Hope this helps

Hi! My ponds about the same size as yours and I made 3 frames made out of 21.5mm black overflow pipe. I got mine from tool station. I used 4 90 bends and 2 tee’s for across the middle and 2 3m length each section and I cable tide the netting over it would cost less than £25. Easy to remove and put out of the way

Hi Andy, Really enjoy your videos. I am also ramping up our pond in the Bay Area, Northern California. My ramp was rather quick since we constructed a very large pond with multiple additions of koi’s. After losing few valuable koi’s, I finally found out the causes. I had almost exact similar sequence of parasitic issues like your pond. My humble opinion/input for your sequence of parasitic issues are with your koi supplier. From your video, I gather you have utmost respect for your koi supplier but I think you need to protect your family koi’s from other pond koi’s, especially from your koi supplier. You need to quickly setup quarantine tank (portable/folderable koi tank will do). Do not add anymore koi’s until you treat your current koi”s and ensure that all family koi’s are healthy & get your water quality to par to the standard that your family koi’s are happy with. Going forward, when adding any new koi(s), regardless if you trust your koi supplier or not, quarantine your new koi’s for 2 to 4 weeks. Once your new koi’s are quarantined with salt (0.3 to 0.6 salinity (ramp up salinity slowly in days), pending on true imported Japanese koi’s vs elsewhere, Japanese koi’s have more lethal parasites with significantly higher tolerance for salt (invest in very good salinity meter)), chemical treatments (formalin/malachite formula with praziquantel powder, dosing per product direction - salt is not advisable with formalin but I found out from veterinarian and from life experience that salt & formalin mixes ok during treatment but if you are nervous, chemical treatment first then major WC then add salt for 5 days minimum @ 0.6) and etc. (specific to parasitic/bacterial/fungal), only then add your new koi’s into your family koi’s. Koi suppliers deal with hundreds & thousands of koi’s in & out and each suppliers have quarantine protocols that works for them to sell their koi’s but aftermath: very excited koi buyers are only seeing polished koi’s for sale and immediately dump the new koi’s directly into their family pond - BIG NO NO. Upon entering your pond, unforeseen parasitic/bacterial/fungal will proliferate in your pond. Stop trusting your source of koi supplier(s) and quarantine your new koi’s, every single time. This protocol solved our problem but it took me awhile to figure this out or finally accepted the value of quarantine tanks. Currently housing over 45 koi’s and adding 5 more in coming weeks, absolutely QUARANTINING all new koi’s before they enter our family koi’s in the main pond. If you don’t quarantine, the cycle of medications, headaches and heartaches will continue and you will not enjoy the love of Koi’s. Hope you take my advise & best wishes from California! PS, Spent many years studying at Oxford so really miss UK and many friends in UK.

Hiya, thank you for that extensive feedback. I will take that on board from your valuable experience. The pond liner has come to the end of its life so do I pay £150 for a new one and the money for the liner connections or do I leave it as it is and build a new brick pond someplace in the garden over the winter putting in a bottom drain and painting all the inside.

My water is mostly stable through the year PH 7.8 Ammonia -Nitrite - KH - GH all OK but my Nitrate has just shot up to 80ppm RED.
My pond water is in a constant refresh 120lt a day in and same out.
Filter wool in the filters was clean but I have replaced it anyway.
Did a 50% water change and the Nitrate rate only dropped to 40ppm and over 2 days has gone back up to 80ppm.
This now brings me to the possibility of too many fish or a problem in my filters.
I now have 29 fish in a 1500 gallon pond the biggest 3 are 18/20 inch next 8 are 14-15 inch then the rest are around 5-7 inch.
The water is clear now after the rain and the fish have plenty of swimming space so I’m at a loss.

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Think you may have it there Alan. You have alot of fish creating alot of waste for your filters. Maybe the filtersbare just coping with the Nitrite and ammonia but as you don't have any plants the Nitrate won't go down?? Get a water lilly or water cress and see if that absorbs it?? But gotta reduce feeding till sorted...

I’ve just watched your latest video . Interesting again especially your midge problem . I had major issue last year with these midges in my filters to the point I would duck when opening the lid , we couldn’t sit by the pond on an evening it was so bad .
I tried a product called mosquito dunks and I dumped 2 in each barrel these did seem to get rid of the majority but not totally .
This year I thought you know what I’m gonna try something different and see what happens .
What did I do I hear you ask? I bought 3 large bulbs of garlic and since May I have been peeling garlic cloves and putting 3 or 4 cloves in each barrel . And wow what a difference ! Yes I still have midges but now I can open the barrels without taking cover. Where I used to get swarms coming out I now get maybe 10-15 of the little swines but I can now also sit by the pond on an evening . And the smell of garlic on a morning is wonderful .
    Good luck

Can I ask why you don’t have any cover for you pond, not that it’s a necessity but the uprights that support can give an easy solution to nets. I do not understand my Nitrate level and why I cannot get it down so I got in touch with a Koi expert who I have purchased fish and food off in the past with the question (my nitrate is red and 80ppm) even after changing 50% of my water over 3 days I cannot get it down.
His reply just forget it he never tests for nitrate the main tests should be PH-Ammonia-Nitrite a good dechlorinator will take care of most nitrates in the pond and if you have a high reading replace the dechlorinator first.
He said the more fish in the pond the more nitrates in the water you need 35 gallons per inch of fish as a guide.
Have plants in the water flow or in the pond watercress, irises, water lettuce water lilies to reduce the nitrate.

Hiya, Thats a pretty standard reply from most suppliers and in a way they are right but I believe the long term affect especially with the levels you are experiencing should be an exeption for your pond? You do have alot of waste being produced by alot of fish. Reducing the feeding and continued water changes should bring it down but long term your fish are only going to get bigger and produce more waste so around you go with the issue? 🤔🤔
