We all know Les is king but at the beginning of every man vs wild episode it essentially says some events are staged. It's not the hosts fault for being someone with skills using those skills to get a high paying job. And then using that job to share knowledge about worst case scenarios.

short story. Spent most of my youth and young adulthood in the woods. Then things like kids and work took most of my time so not much time left for being out in nature/ the wood Then sitting at home and either it was first show or the pilot, the one where the moose came fairly close and startled you. That show somehow woke up the woodsman in me and I got back into the wood again teaching my grandkids how to love and respect the outdoors.

As a wildland firefighter for ten years I spent a lot of my off time in the winters watching survivorman, not only was it an escape for me from boring civilian life but I feel I took a lot of what I learned from you and implemented It into not only my fire career but into my real life. Now I am older, 32 as compared to my 19 year old self when I started my fire career, having said that, I feel watching you commentate your old shows is perfect! It allows me to rethink how I saw certain scenarios as my younger self and how I would react to them now, thanks for(unknowingly) being mine and a lot of other peoples mentor. Keep these cool shows coming, cheers!

Over the years watching this great show... It really taught me usable, practical skills that have been helpful. I found myself stuck in the desert years ago and I thought always, "What would Les do here?" No one knew I was there... So I had to walk out. 5 1/2 hours walking in the blistering sun until I got my hands on water. That time, although short, was one of the scariest times of my life. Dehydration is no joke. That coupled with exhaustion can be deadly. Les always said that all the survival skills mean nada without the survival spirit... The will to go on. Thank you Les for all you do!

I've been a fan of your philosophy on wilderness emergencies since the first season aired. A funny thing, I recently showed my pops how to make charred cloth yet had never actually done it myself. I used tinfoil on a stovetop to char the clothe and a Ferro rod and then a magnifying glass to create an ember. Both methods were successful in lighting the charred cloth on fire. It had been more than a decade since I had seen the Survivorman 'plane crash episode' but still the technique was in my brain and I not only was I able to recreate the lesson but also pass it on. Thanks Les.

The Plane Crash episode was the first episode I saw of Survivorman. I got hooked ever since. I'm so glad for his Director's Commentaries, I never knew how genuine he kept his shows, I highly respect that. As a hunter, I always watched survival shows as "these people are poaching animals when they PUT themselves in this situation and have a camera crew with food next to them." Never sat right with me. I applaud your way of viewing it, as you only kill something if you NEED to.. not to just show that you can when the guy next to you has 2 doz cliff bars.

  • @werewolf74

This was the episode that hooked me. As a young scout who was a fan of the hatchet books, flipping through the channels and I see this guy, surviving in the wilderness, exampling a plane crash, and I went and looked at my Hatchet book and sure enough that's how the book started as I remember. And seeing Les do it for real, really made me want to get into survival.. ironically, I never fully got into it as much as I should have...but I became a filmmaker instead.
Double barrel inspiration Les. Maybe I'll take up Harmonica next..

Not sure if you read the comments, but I appreciated what you said about the rabbit. Aside from what you said, I think it’s also important to remember that some of your audience probably doesn’t hunt, and seeing a dead animal isn’t always easy. For me, I don’t hunt, but I understood the necessity to survival and I appreciate your respect of the animal.

Thank you Les, I just love reminiscing Survivorman episodes with these Directors Commentary videos. Not only is it a means to help society get through this Covid-19 pandemic (I am a Canadian Paramedic from NL), it also gives us, the fans of the show, an opportunity to revisit the original, truest and best survival show ever put on television, but this time we get all the behind the scenes backstories from each of these featured episodes directly from the man himself. Brilliant . . . Please keep posting them. Thank you.

I really love when you let that hang unsaid for a few secs. 'You sweat..... ....... ....... you die.' Everyone at home, HE SAID IT! lol. Sometimes its even perfect to not even finish it. I find it funny if people are left hanging lol.
