  • Electric powered motorcycles. Are they the future of riding?
    In this video I will totally surprise you and will test the new 2018 Zero FX - Electric motorcycle.It's coming with nice looking body, 21-18 Inch tires and only weigh 130kg. It was really strange for me to ride something like that, but I like it. The power of this simple engine suppose to be only 44 H.P, but the feeling is that I ride 100H.P motorcycle. It is like that, because you have it immediate, from the moment you twist the throttle and they are there. I had a really fun riding day and enjoy it so much. This could be a great option for many of you who just use the bikes to commute for example. The battery life is about 100km and the charging time is 8-9 hours. The only con I found so far on it was the price - 12,200 Euro in Germany.

    Nice. We've had a nissan leaf as our family car for the last few years and that low-end power from the electric motor still makes me smile. It's so strange to feel the strong pull right from a standstill. I think you're right - electric bikes are probably the future, especially for city riding.

    This is one bike that can give you 'more smiles per mile'. It's not the range but the fun factor per distance. Sure the initial cost is high but I'm sure the savings will come in the long run since it won't have to come in for shorter service intervals for lubrication, etc. It's a perfect bike to go through small neighborhoods and even quiet country side roads without disturbing anyone with a loud pipe or buzzing engine. Power always comes instantly in most electric vehicles (like Tesla cars) because of its direct drive system which can become addictive haha. I'd love to own an electric bike like this someday.

    Amazing design and function. Imagine going to a "battery station" for a "quick swap" of a fully charged battery instead of filling up with gas for the same price. That would be cool. The price of new technology is always high in the beginning remember how much hard drives and computer ram used to be and now it's so cheap. Thanks for the review Sir , I was smiling also.

Like you stated several times, it's all about the fun. The quiet operation appeals to me. Thanks for another excellent review, as usual. Not news, but electric vehicles have been around since 1900. This one just has a much better battery and electric motor since then. Everything else about this machine is just another motorcycle, of it's type / size, basically. Granted, electric motors have a super amount of instant torque compared to petrol based motors, but they also consume the battery much more than gasoline for the given range ... at least for now. Also, the future of motorcycles is complicated by those of us used to the engine sound and having (also super old) the shifting of gears to feel that we are controlling the vehicle. I, personally, have had a couple of e-bikes and loved them, but the reliability was quite sketchy and the repair took on a whole new dynamic. No longer was I adjusting cables, or just lubing chains, but now, there are electronic components that are not readily accessible for a given model even months after its sale, and even custom fuses that are very hard to find. I would love to embrace these new creatures, but with a garage full of wasted plastic and electronic bike parts that I will probably never use again, and a bike that no longer has e-power, I am more skeptical of what the real value is. I guess we are on the fringe of a new era, but I really hope that we collectively find a better power solution. But, it does look like a fun machine, and maybe that is all that matters until the next evolution of non-petrol bikes. Again, thanks for all of your informative reviews.

      Agreed, this is the future for certain. The perfect city bike. All that needs to happen is for the prices to come down and the range to be increased (even slightly) which will eventually happen. I think machines like this will be more attractive to the younger generation also as they are not interested in noisy, high maintenance combustion engines and hence the reason that motorcycle sales are in decline worldwide. Anything that gets young people back on to riding motorcycles gets my tick of approval!!

    Is the engine-braking effect strong on this one? Most electric vehicles (bmw c-series electric scooter for example) even turn the brake lights on when if you try to coast, since the bike slows down so fast.

    Hi awesome video!!! but what abouth engine brake? i mean does it feel somthing like it?

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, when you chop the throttle it is stopping. It has also a few modes to adjust and to regenerate more power to the battery. That's why the range in the city is longer than on the highway.

    • @Bob_Lob_Law
      @Bob_Lob_Law 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Motorcycle Adventures If I might add to that whole range bit, Regen braking isn't the whole side of the story.
      Speed is a huge factor in effeciency, power required increases with the square of your speed. Thus travelling twice as fast requires 4x the energy.
      Range in city's will be higher due to lower wind resistances at lower speeds.
      This is one challenge electric motorcycles will have a hard time overcoming, highways aren't a big deal for gas engines, because you have an infinite reserve of power, and your not wasting as much energy idling. Evs are much more effecient at lower speeds, but can't store as much energy.

    You really don't need a tool to get that mirror fixed. Just snag the screw by hand, and than rotate the mirror. It will stop by itself. Another thing I have to tell you, or warn you is - never pass the cars by the right side. I often see this in your other videos as well and it is a bad habit. Many motorcyclist were hurt or even worse by doing this. You have a lot of experience but please... anyway this machine... hmmm it is a real future, I like it very much.. I think my next motorcycle, or maybe the name will be changed to electrobikecycle :) or whatever... it will be electro... after 10-15years, when one charge will be for 10minutes, and the electroposts will be everywhere :) Ride safe

    Apart from acknowledging the technology and admitting it looked fun I can't really make too many more comments as its a machine Im not really interested in and have no use for. Did you ever think during your test ride,that the lack of engine sound was a safety issue? By that I mean ,others around you might not hear you and therefore be unaware of your presence? Its bad enough with idiots saying "sorry mate,I didn't see you". On this machine they won't hear you either! Nice review though. Cheers

    • @motohobo
      @motohobo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Foo bar. Not arguing with you,but its not just other motorised vehicles you have to be worried about. Cyclists (not all!) and dozy pedestrians are a huge problem in city's and towns. Of course there are always going to be accidents no matter what precautions are taken. I just think that having no engine sound would increase the chance of others not being aware of you. In years to come however,when old gits like me are riding the highways of heaven (or hell!!) maybe it wont be so much of a problem as everyone will be more used to the clinical,sanitized, boring non sound of the electric engine. Its the future I know,but it doesn't mean I have to like it,haha!

      Might be fun for you to be stripping down your bike on a regular basis, but most young millenials that I know could care less about doing that. They just want to ride. Electric is the future.

    When electric bikes have a range of >300km and charging stations away from cities they would be hard to ignore for most people. The whole no noise thing I just can't get used to. I'm sure one day there will be hybrid bikes which could be very interesting!

    Thanks again Pavlin. Very good video.
    I hope you don't mind but I will add my opinion on electrical bikes..
    These bikes are the future even the Isle of Man TT has an electric bike category. The manufacturers will make these bike the future in the same way as they did with 4stroke engine technology. Simply put if the pro riders are riding these bikes people will want it..
    The downside isn't battery life it's the infrastructure, a clever way to increase journey distance is for example a refuelling station providing charged batteries to go then your journey can be continuous. But if the battery is integrated like in this model or the batteries require so many different styles of connectors just like in battery power tools then this isn't a viable solution..
    In an ideal world these companies will invest in interchangeable technologies and incourage owners to keep their bikes when the battery needs replacing but in reality these conpanies will need you to buy a whole new bike essentially destroying any environmental credibility they are preaching.
    Sorry for my 2 pence..
    Christian..

      Charging speeds will continue to increase just as they have done. As batteries will still be heavy even as energy density increases as well, Bike manufacturers just like for cars will want to strategically place these as low and central as possible thus likely to want specialized shapes over common slot in/out strategy.
      Honestly it seems that Bikes are more easy to electrify than cars since bikes are more simple and light weight need less energy to be stored. Also an electric drive train is even more simple and light which further lends itself well to bikes. Could likely put the motor at the back wheel and no need for gearing, clutch starter etc.
      I greatly look forward to the future. The only part I'll be so sad about is giving up shifting!

    Yeahh it sounds like Light Railway or Subway/Underground train...
    Pity the range sucks... With over 700miles range that bike would be perfect courier tool but with 60miles (100km) it simply sucks. Time to recharge is also way longer than the time to drain the battery...

      Michael Ksiezopolski you ride 700 miles a day as a courier????? When I was couriering I'd be lucky to average 20 km/h, and I'd often do less than 100 km a day because the middle of the day there are no jobs. With a quick charger you could get a full charge during that midday quiet time anyway.

      I do medical highway runs from London to all major cities in UK. Sometimes I do have two separate deliveries from Old Brompton Hospital to Children Hospital in Leeds or one to Edinburgh or Glasgow then I do have a run to Bristol next to the Airport or Bath and some more in a day. One run from London to Leeds is making up 225miles each way so the trip alone is giving you 450miles if you add some short runs to Birmingham/Cambridge/Peterborough or any combination of these you have a bit more than 700miles a day in 12-15 hours day.
      I do know that City couriers are not making any mileages but they are paid a bit differently. I am being paid only for delivery when I do have a package on board and I am not being paid for an empty runs or for pick-up run. My money is being paid from the moment I do take the package up until I do deliver it. Long days are standard. If you work for Deliveroo or Uber Eat you will run just a mile or few at most and most of your day is standing still and wait. I am most of the day on the motorway running bikes over 600cc not city 125cc bikes like you do. I do not think you can cover 300miles a day on 125cc and even if you can you will kill this bike at no time... My average speed is 70mph and that's including refuelling and pick-up/delivery time. Ever since I started I had no waiting time. Starting at 7:30-8:00 at St Georges Hospital I am getting a first assignment, which often is The Guys Hospital to pick up some equipment for children monitoring and then pick up some blood products or body parts and deliver it up north dropping children monitoring equipment on my way. As you see I have no time to waste. City Link is maybe not as busy as eCourier but they have also more riders and they pay differently. The only quiet time I do have at home when I switch my radio and phone off.

    You should also count that battery will guarantee you 500*100km of total mileage until capacity will drop to 80%, so after 50000 km you still will have 80% of range. Now, let's count. Lets say fuel price will remain the same and lets assume bike of this class will use 4.5 liters per 100 km (very optimistic), so 500 * 4.5 * 1.3 ~= 3000 euros economy only for fuel! Count 10 oil + filter changes (25*10), some other maintenance petrol engine have, count also tax discount and you will found that real price of this bile is something like 8000-9000 euros. And now count your time spend to maintain petrol engine.... Is this bike worth that money after all? I think, yes.
    p.s. for 50k km you will spend only 500*10*0.13 = 650 euros (pessimistic approach) or only 280 euros (optimistic approach) for electricity.

      Friend of mine thought exactly like you, when he bought Toyota Prius. 3 years later he need to change the battery and the new cost 7,000 euro. All the money he saved were gone, just like that. On paper is always good, but the reality is something else. Don't get me wrong, I think that this is great bike and no more than 10 years we all will ride it, but for now I prefer to stay away.

    • @prostosergik
      @prostosergik 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, Prius is a very different story, it's hybrid, not full-electric, have weak battery and if your friend ride mostly in the city, it means he ride mostly on battery (which is weak, remember) and that's why battery needs to be changed, and, actually, batteries for Prius are very overpriced! I assume Prius was 2015 production year, and it have only 4.4kWh battery! (almost 2 times LESS than this bike!) and driving in city slow traffic destroys battery very fast. So sorry, I can't agree that Prius is a good example. =)
      Same time, for Nissan Leaf (that have 24 kWh battery) entire battery (slightly used) costs only 3000-4000 euros and can be replaced in 20 minutes in almost every garage. That is progress. No one can stop it. Yes, we all will ride this bikes, soon or not.
      If you are really curious (just in case) you can go to head office of one of that companies who have that electric scooters over Berlin for timeshare. All that scooters are electric. And they have very huge statistics about batteries, maintenance, etc. =)
      ps for many many many years travelers will choose petrol bikes for long distance travels. And I will also always have petrol bike in my garage. But! My next scooter will be electric without any compromises. Nothing can be better for city commuting.

      Motorcycle Adventures As an electronics engineer I have plenty of "contact" with electronics in my daily work life. When I'm out on my bike I much prefer my 190hp firebreathing GSXR 1000. It has real soul, and a pulse, and I can hear what she's doing and the mood she's in :) No electric vehicle has a personality that comes close in my opinion. If I had to go electric, I would look at the Lightning LS-218, for mind-blowing performance. But I really fear it would feel clinical and soulless compared to the petrol powered monster I drive now.
