My husband and I watch you faithfully!! Everyday after work we check our TH-cam. We are living through your adventure and you guys are rocking it!!! Keep up the great work!! You got this!!
Still enjoying every video, especially the week wrap up. So much good info. Love that you take time to answer questions. Congratulations on 200 miles!!
My husband and I are planning to thru hike in 2019. We have been watching tons of videos, and yours are by far our favorites!!!! We really appreciate the detail you provide in these weekly wrap-ups, I am taking avid notes. Keep up the good work!!!!
Highs, lows, surprises and the people. There's so much truth in all of this. Great video guys. We experienced highs and lows on the CT, as a couple and as individuals. Worst day on trail for us was early on, segment 2 in the burn area. It was so hot and just beat us down. Best day is a hard one, the San Juans were spectacular. The people of the trail were the surprises. So many incredible people all helping each other. We set out to be alone and found ourselves part of a tramily. While we hiked pretty much in solitude every day, our tramily would show up just when we least expected it and always in a wonderful way. In camp, in town and at trailheads. We have so many wonderful stories from the CT.
For sure the people for us was the best surprise - hikers & trail angels - lifted our spirits all the time, and we were NOT expecting that! We set out to be alone too, and we are both pretty introverted. We were amazed at the friends and tramily we made and met up with over the whole hike.
Hi Jenn and Greg. Just found you and added you. You appear to be about the same vintage as myself and I enjoy following the "older" demographic rather than the university aged crowd. Good for the younger folks for doing it, I can just relate more to some folks than others. Do you have a rough estimate on completion?
jeff newbery our max would be 7 months (early Oct) but we think more likely around 6 months. Our demographic is very much a minority out here. Thanks for commenting. Sunsets.
Y'all are my favorite videos to watch. I like the day to day but I'm really digging the weekly wrap-up. I was curious about the weight loss but wasn't sure if that was okay to ask about lol. My wife and I carry a 3 person tent too just for the extra room and comfort. Two questions to get both of y'all's opinions on. How have your hiking shoes held up and did you ever think you should have gotten more of a boot for water resistance? Did y'all plan ahead for weight loss when buying your packs and are they getting loose and less comfortable? One more thing congratulations on 200+ miles!!!!
Hey guys - appreciate your openness. Lots of good info. While I don't need a sports bra, but I do like my Icebreaker wool briefs (even in summer). The comfort and odor control is outstanding. Something to consider Sunsets. Thanks again - Evo
Great analysis of gear. Own a packa, will bring a rain jacket too. Sometimes I can hike in the rain ☔️ without a jacket. The only down is packing in the rain, thus the jacket. Thanks for the rechargeable headlamp review. Won't get one.
Start my work day with you all. Love all of the info and the weekly wrap-ups. KEEP IT UP! I'm in Virginia, as you get closer, I'll reach out. I'll be a trail angel or offer a zero day on my farm! Best Wishes!
Thanks for posting the videos of your journey, and the Wrap-up videos are really informative. I have only section hiked the AT, and all in Virginia. I was under the impression that if Virginia was this hard, then the rest of the trail must be super-hero brutal. After watching other videos over the past couple of years, I'm beginning to see videos that say Virginia is HARD. So that makes me feel a little better about aching when doing VA section hikes, so fair warning. Keep up the strength and stay safe! Looking forward to the next videos.
+Bryant Altizer yeah I've been corrected on that. What I mean though is that elevation gain decreases significantly. So with getting pack weight down, earning our trail legs, and less climbing the state is "easier".
$$ is all about choice. Some choose more hotel zero's and restaurants, others don't. I've noticed on previous years videos towns=$$ but can be the fine line between getting re-energized after a tough stretch and giving up. But that freedom is what makes the hike a flexible journey. Given that I'm 47 I totally enjoy the videos as you have a different perspective than some of the younger generations that are hiking. Keep up the good work.
I posted this on your day 7 video. ............... Really sounds like you guys are having a great time. Me and my wife are planning our 2nd section hike very soon. Did the stairs to Neel's last year. Correct, the stairs kicked our butt and once we finished them we knew we would be able to handle anything !!! Pack weight was near 40 #. We have managed to get it down to a little less than 30 now.!! We are gong from Neel's to Dicks and was wondering would you have gone to Whitley gab shelter if there was not a water issue going on. ? That's a long way off the trail. Thanks and we are enjoying your videos. You guys talk about where you stop and how many miles ect. That helps with my planning.
Thanks for answering both my questions guys! I have a Packa myself and it works pretty well, but I hammock camp, so for me I can position my tarp in a place where I can reach it through the pit zips. Once the tarp is up, I'm golden for keeping the pack cover dry. My biggest problem is in camp where if it's on the pack, I don't have a rain jacket to run around camp in and if it's on my, I have to keep my pack under my hammock so it doesn't get wet. I probably won't take it on my PCT thru, but haven't decided yet. Gracias! Cheers! DonP
Wow, I have the same xero Z-Trails. I was going to use them on our attempt 2018. Fingers crossed that I don't have the same problem. Keep stepping off those miles. Also love the weekly report.
Greg I usually Lowe's or Home Depot Energizer headlamps now 2 Triple-A batteries and sometimes the thing is in my truck for 3 months I pull it out it still works fine very inexpensive
Been watching all of you video shows my wife and I are going to try the trail starting in July going south but need to take a car so we can leave when we have to for a day or two is it hard to find people to follow you and move your car as you hike for a price I know do hostile offer any thing like that we are taking a satalite phone to call for pick up we are older couple 60 s but it's a bucket list thanks for any help you could give
Following a dozen or so hikers on TH-cam and you guys are the best! How are your La Sportiva's holding up? I have a pair and wonder how they will hold up on the JMT this fall.
Ut Oh. The ReVolt and Xero shoes are currently part of my gear list.. Have you left your ReVolt plugged into a wall outlet for a while, say overnight? I had the same issue and I just kept mine plugged into an outlet overnight and it finally kept a charge. Not saying this will fix your issue, but just something else to try. Best of luck and thanks for taking the time and energy to do these recaps!
+Weberventure1 Yes, we tried plugging the revolt in long term. No go. If you like the xeros wear em. They are not right for me. Too difficult to piton if I need to make a midnight run and they slip around when wet. Try them out in those situations and see if they work. Chica still likes hers, but agrees it's a hassle to put on.
Thank you for the wrap ups. Expensive name brand items aren't all the marketing and hype purport them to be. Hope your increased miles per day happens, you seem to be spending quite a bit so far. But, it's your money and your hike. Keep up the good reporting and good luck with every step.
+Molon Labe thanks for the comment. Mileage must increase or we don't reach Maine in time. Anyway, we are very good at achieving our goals and hitting long term budgeting items and will make adjustments as needed.
Do you have a plan for where you'll be the weekend of 4/28-4/30. I'm doing a section hike in hot springs. I'd love to bring you guys some trail magic! 😀
great summary guys. greg maybe you do the summaries because your sucking air while jen is vidioing lol. actually as your hiking prowless improves so does your media presentation, a great combo. you guys are crushing it keep it up. btw, i. would have filed the pizza and 6 pack under the 1st aide category.
I've never heard anyone do a run-down of money spent. Interesting. (BTW, almost nobody gets views of Clingman's dome. I'm going to assume it's not really there and there is just a screen of fog in front of it. :D)
When we were researching doing the trail Budget was a concern. It seemed most writing or talking about the subject discussed it in very broad strokes “plan on $1 a mile”. I determined I would share our budget and spending habits to add to the knowledge base.
you spoke of your dislike for uphills. during my section hikes on the a.t. i dreaded the ups. it dawned on me one day what it must have been like for the soldiers in the civil war fighting battles and simply maneuvering on that terrain . your thoughts pleaxe.
Hmmmmm. I'm glad I watched this. I actually was planning on wearing my Xero shoes (same ones as yours but bought before I found your videos) around camp on the AT. I don't really like the weight (over 1 lb). I hate things between my toes so I'll look into alternatives now. John from MI and JLDRDOTCOM on TH-cam
I was very disappointed with the Xeros as a camp shoe. I wore them a bit in Spain on the Camino but prefer the ease of in and out of traditional flip flops. That said, Chica loves her pair.
greg i feel as though sunshine is not a good trail name for you. its not that you dont have a radiant personality that many find quite charming. Rather, you have an uncanny knack for presenting information in a clear and concise manner. your weekly wrap ups ate very informative. Thus i propose that you adopt the trail mame of professor.
+Terry Case still wrong. It's plural "Sunsets". My last name is Seymour and my life philosophy is to value experiences over possessions. Put another way ... to Seymour Sunsets 😎
my goal is to do 2018 thru hike. need to save n train my body. first question when u get the permit to thru hike what is the cost. also do u two have jobs. if u do are u going back to them. another question do u have to use the fire ring to cook or can u use your own firewood stove to cook on. does it have to be a oil canister stove only?
I have been watching your videos for a while now and I just wanted to let you know that I think you both are funny, candid and informative and very entertaining!! You remind me of my husband and I and your cohesiveness on the trail reminds me of how we would be. It is our number one bucket list and have been talking about hiking the AT for years but work commitments will make it very difficult. I have not watched all your videos but did you touch upon how you made it possible to actually hike it? That would be our greatest challenge right now and what is your expected time frame? Keep up the great work! When you get to New Hampshire and the great White Mountains....I want to bring you trail magic and meet you somewhere!! I also work at a B&B and I could possibly work out the most amazing relaxing night in the most comfortable bed with a great breakfast!! We are working on hiking all the 48 foot 4k's! I know NH is far away but I do hope you make it this far!! I look so forward to following you!!!
+Appalachian Trail Tales also, check out the week 3 wrap up, sunsets gives some biographical background which will answer your question of how we are able to do this. We have given ourselves 7 months to complete but expect it to take less time.
May I friend request you on FB or you can friend request me. Just watched the week 3 wrap up and I realize you and Greg are very similar to us!! We always look for the trail less traveled and would always choose a tent vs a shelter but do you have to stay in the shelter if it is not full?? Also are you using the post office for package pick up?
just curious if either of you I've tried these trail shoes with the rock soles in them. apparently they have a firmer bottom for when you're walking on very Rocky Terrain., or if you've heard anything about them while you've been out there
Richard McQuade Altra makes a "Rock Guard" insole that you put underneath your normal insole. Supposed to work pretty well but no experience with them myself.
My husband and I watch you faithfully!! Everyday after work we check our TH-cam. We are living through your adventure and you guys are rocking it!!! Keep up the great work!! You got this!!

These weekly summaries are becoming one of my favorite AT video segments...congrats guys...you are knocking this out of the park!
Sara Hikes NH thanks!

You guys are inspirational!
I love the wrap ups!
I have been wondering about the expenditures and breakdowns, thanks for doing the videos.

I like the wraps about expenditures and going over gear. Tevas are good have good arch support.
You are an inspiration to many people! You're doing a great job! Keep it up!

Ordering the Big Agnes tomorrow. Then an REI backpacking class. Anje and I want to be you when we grow up.
+Tim Carlisle cool. We are very happy with the BA.
Tim Carlisle hi Tim! You guys are adventurous too - always love seeing all your trip pictures. -- Chica

Up hills are not fun but think positive. Firmer thighs, buns and your burning fat.
I agree with the rib situation. Ribs of what ?
