  • Released 21 July 1991. The first single of Toni's second album House Of Hope. Music video directed by Toni Childs. Song written by David Ricketts and Toni Childs.
    Lyrics
This man I married is buried deep
And the more I try to wake him, the more he sleeps
I used to think I knew this man
The tenderness, not the back of his hand
It's been two weeks since he last had a drink
But the time bomb's ticking, I can never sleep
It would be easier if he did
Why do I stay here, stay with him?
    Why do you do it?
Why do you treat us bad?
When you've got two kids who love you
And a wife that's missing you bad
    I've got to go now
    I've got to say goodbye
Don't try to stop us now
    And please, don't you cry

Can't you see? We've all been through it
    It's all been said before
With all these tears, for how many years
Can I keep coming back for more? No more
Must be addicted to all this pain
'Cause I keep coming back for the shame
Dear God, give me the strength to leave
I've got to keep going, keep going this time
    Why do you do it?
Why do you treat us bad?
When you've got two kids who love you
And a wife that's missing you bad
    I've got to go now
    I've got to say goodbye
Don't try to stop us now
    And please, don't you cry

I was so, so lucky to see Toni Childs in 88, in a small club, The Paradise, in Boston, during The Womans Boat tour. Still one of the most memorable shows, ger voice was truly one of the greats. Like Natalie Merchant, Toni's voice was powerful, unique and mesmerizing.
She cut her career way too short!
Im glad shes happy down under.
    Love to her!❤

This song is so powerful - so, empowering- so saddening- when a partner is abusive -an addict - and still for the sake of his children and wife - still cannot seek help from their internal hell. May we all give love a go but know when to go when the one you love doesn’t know what love is. God bless all of us.

This song is particularly poignant now with the epidemic of domestic violence related deaths in this country (Australia) . One woman is killed every two weeks by an intimate partner in Australia. To all DV victims out there please, please get out the first time it happens, don't stay thinking the abuser will change or it wont happen again, they will never change and it will happen again and again the longer you stay the greater the chance you wont survive it.

Trivia: when Toni was a girl, she'd sometimes sing in church, or at school, as as much as she tried to sing in a "normal" voice, it was hard for her.
She said many times she was reprimanded by the teachers (nuns?) not to sing "in that voice!"

      @markneeley4288 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

People can (often) not put themselves into another's shoes. So, if someone can sing uniquely, then let them. Thankfully, Toni stepped up from backing singer, and wah-lah, the rest is genuine vocal mastery. Thank you, Toni !

I remember hearing this song for the first time - RAGE..late late nite (morning lol)..TV was on in the background as I burn the midnight oil.. Was a student in Melbourne then. I loved it the the minute it started because it was just so captivating the melodies and then I learn about the lyrics. Totally amazing. Of course Toni's voice just blew me away when she sang the first words... Till this day when I hear this song, I remember those moments when I first heard of Toni Childs and it also brings back wonderful memories of my life as a student in Australia!

I don't think so. I believe she was channeling Hedda Nusbaum and the visuals are a perfect homage to a woman destroyed by Joel Steinberg. Poor Lisa & Hedda never had a chance living with that monster.
