One of my favorite things about this tag is seeing people alter it to fit their interests! This is such a neat TBR and I feel so honored you're participating. Tropical gothic as a subgenre? Yes please!
@@thebaileygrind it is so much fun to find new-to-me books from all over! I hadn’t heard of tropical gothic until I read Mexican Gothic, but now I’m invested!
Off to read the description box! This was awesome. Love all the subcategories in contemporary! I found a Gothic Western, quite accidentally 😂 it arrived today.
I loved it when I read it a few years ago. I have to read more of her work. I read Jazz too, before reading Beloved. Oh man…. SO good, but also, not for everyone.
Sorry for all the comments lol but it’s so funny: I was JUST thinking of the King’s General the other day. I read it YEARS ago, and loved it, but I can’t remember why it’s Gothic. I’ve read a ton of her works.
I’m pretty sure I also have those Melville short stories (is it SAD I’m losing track of my stock?) After finishing Moby Dick, I’ve thought more than once it’s sort of Gothic. Do you agree??
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission it’s certainly got a haunting. And you could maybe make a Jekyll and Hyde comparison. It might require squinting in places, but I could probably be convinced.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission and I had to text my dad last night because I was looking for a book I was certain I had but couldn’t find, so I had to ask if he had it or if I was losing it! (Thankfully, he has it.)

@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission really? The idea of gothic western has never even occurred to me. I’ll be curious what you think about it!
Still really want that Cambridge Companion to Gothic Lit! I have the Virginia Woolf one ❤And woah, Gothic Bodies sounds cool!
Oh man, I was considering rereading Beloved too!
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission do it! It’s incandescent but with its toes in the mud.

@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission and I’ve only read the well known ones. But I enjoyed them so I’ve got to read more, finally!

Right, like there are gothic elements. Gothic is a bit difficult to categorize but I think it’s our habit of categorizing everything! It’s fun though.
Ooo I meant to add: Pip’s story arc. That for me, was what stuck out as sort of Gothic.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission yeah ok, that could be a little Turn of the Screw.
