I personally wonder if he ever wanted to be king. I feel that he was pushed by his mother, the Lancastrians and the circumstances of the time to become a king. Also, we can ask the same question about Edward IV and especially Richard III. Too many heirs to the throne already died, Edward of Westminister, Edward V and his brother Richard and Edward of Middleham. Henry was basically the last adult man standing. The person who was usurped, if I am correct, was Edward Plantagenet (please... no more Edwards), son of George Duke of Clarence who was only 10 when Richard III died. So I think that Henry was the best option, only how he got to be king is dubious at best. Who knows, Richard might have remarried and he might have had more children. We just don't know.
Man, imagine if The Tudors (2007) was ACTUALLY about the Tudor dynasty, instead of the Henry VIII show. This would make a fascinating, action packed, beginning of a series that could have spanned approximately 150 years.
I totally agree. I'd love to see a show that goes through the entire dynasty and actually sticks to the real history too. At the moment the best you can do is watch the White Princess, then the Tudors, then one of the various shows about Elizabeth (the Glenda Jackson one is probably still the best).
I always wondered why it didnt include ALL the Tudor Monarchs and relatives. They couldve even gone in a little about Arthur too. Maybe, also watch the Spanish Princess (fictionalized story of Catherine of Aragon)as well. I hated it, but it does touch on Henry VIII's early reign and Prince Arthur.

I still have to say that I loved The Tudors, as well as all of the offshoots, such as The Red and White Princess, Spanish Princess, etc. They are well done enough to keep someone who knows and enjoys the history, swept up and busy with the topic! I don't understand why they changed the actual facts, as the real ones were, in fact, fascinating enough on its own! I just really appreciated and enjoyed the casting. And still have those actors in mind when I listen to podcasts, etc., such as these!
Henry the Seventh is such a complicated and fascinating historical figure. It’s great to see his story being covered here. He’s my favorite Tudor and he often gets eclipsed by his more widely-known descendants, in spite of the fact that his reign stabilized England after a tumultuous period. Maybe that’s why he’s not as well-known: once he was in power, he was relatively normal, pragmatic and not one for scandal or glittering displays of wealth.
Yes. During his lifetime, Edward IV's government tried several times to gain custody of Henry Tudor, Duke of Richmond, while Henry was living on the Continent. Henry was making increasingly narrower escapes from English royal custody. What would have happened to him if Edward IV or Richard II had gotten their hands on him is anyone's guess.
Of all the Tudor monarchs, I would love to have met Henry vii. He’s never gotten the recognition that I think he deserves. He worked damn hard to secure the thrown which took bravery, good leadership, etc. although not that popular he stabilized the treasury, implemented laws to strengthen centralized government led by no favorites but by his own strength of character. God knows what happened with his son. I know the first 20 yrs or so he was the “Golden Boy”but his actions later spoke of a callous mercurial Narcissist.
In my view, Henry had no choice but to take the throne, as the only alternative would have been to die at the hands of the Yorkists. His close blood ties to the vanquished House of Lancaster made him too much of a threat for Richard III, or any potential Yorkist successor, to spare. Had he not invaded, he would have been hunted down eventually. If his invasion had been defeated, the best Henry could have hoped for was a death in battle similar to Richard's historically, or, at worst, capture by Richard and the extremely gruesome execution reserved for those regarded as traitors.
Thanks for a spot on an underrated king. He was completely overshadowed by his wife killing son, and his charismatic granddaughter. His story is, well, quite a story! His mum, too.

Given that King Arthur as a name is now legendary and mythological (Briton and not Saxon?), given that it is not used as a royal name because of the horrific circumstance of Henry VIII's brother, and given that if Arthur Tudor had not died, history would be very, very different. There are times I feel like noting down all the instances that increased division between these islands but I think I'm just a layman and would be reinventing the wheel. But also it's information that more people should be privy to. Then it wouldn't be privy.
@@Al_Ellisande from what I’ve read the legendary Arthur was most likely around in the period after Rome had left and was a Briton who fought invaders from Europe and had some success. From there the legend continued and was popularised in the Middle Ages.
Richard putting the crown on his head and riding to kill Henry is a scene I’m surprised I haven’t seen in a movie. Although he dies in this battle I’d be interested how his bravery stacks up id bet he’s as brave as any
maybe putting the crown on his head was his biggest mistakes ...i think he was a force to recon with and he deserved the crown ..i think Margret Beauforts portrayal in The white Queen and Princess was accurate its the only thing that makes sense ..ive studies war of wars for years and couldnt put it together because it never occurred to me that Margret was the culprit but it fits so perfectly ..she hid behind her holy than thou image Richard did great things in York long before his brother died
@niiwin6595 I agree that wearing his crown into battle was not the brightest move by Richard III, but The White Queen and The White Princess Series are very inaccurate historically. Although Margaret Beaufort was Henry's greatest supporter. The fact that Margaret didn't like her mother or her husband Stafford is inaccurate, so too was her killing of the princes in the tower. It makes for a good dramatic story by Philipa Gregory. So is the so-called curse on the person who killed the princes made by the Dowager Queen and Elizabeth York. Knowing by then that if it could fall on her grandchildren. The books by Philipa Gregory are historical fiction. And this is certainly true for her portrail of Margaret Beaufort. Every good story needs a hero and a villan. In Philipa Gregory's books Margaret Beaufort is the Villan, but it is not an honest depiction of the real Margaret Beaufort. Just like Jaqeata Rivers and Elizabeth Woodville did not practice witchcraft to decide the outcomes of battles or calling up storms that led to a miscarriage.

Fascinating! I didn't know all those events in Henry's early life, especially not how much danger he was in in Brittany & France. To answer the question, I think he was both, in a sense, but "no claim to the throne" is debatable- the whole concept of a "rightful claim" isn't clear-cut. In the end, Henry claimed the throne by right of conquest, with the extra qualification of marrying Elizabeth. You could also say he usurped the throne, just as Edward IV, Richard III & Henry IV had done, but once that was done, he was king & remained so til his death, passing the throne to his son. If you DO look at his claim by his ancestry, I don't _think_ it's 100% certain that the Beauforts were barred from ever taking the throne, but correct me if I'm wrong. And however "obscure" his connection was, he was the nearest adult male Lancastrian by that point. If the Yorkists wanted to kill him even before he attempted to take the throne, then I agree- if he didn't have a chance of living safely, much less returning to England safely, that would've pushed him in the direction of trying to take the throne- better to die trying than be assassinated or executed when he wasn't even working against the crown.
I didn't know a lot about him, especially his early life either when I began. I think he gets overlooked a lot because of how famous his son Henry and granddaughter Elizabeth were, but his tale is fascinating. He and Elizabeth could have traded stories about their rocky paths to the throne actually (though I think Henry would have had her beat). Yes, I agree that at this point in time, the concept of a claim to the throne was quite fluid. There were so many Yorkist usurpations that Richard can hardly have been surprised when someone came to do the same to him. The Beauforts had theoretically been barred, but you're correct that there was some question over the legality of the barring. Of course, there would also be some question over legitimising children born out of wedlock, as that undermined the whole point of wedlock. Plus, if they'd been living in a less sexist world, it actually would have been Lady Margaret Beaufort who had the stronger Lancastrian claim, as she was the senior family member. A very complicated family and line of succession indeed :-)

I knew almost nothing about him, but getting interested in the Wars of the Roses, & hearing people call Henry VII the worst person in history (along with his mother), & a couple of other things got me curious about him, & he's really interesting & I quite like him. I love genealogy, so sorting that out actually drew me to the Wars of the Roses! :D It's what I cling to to half-understand it, & I've mostly got my Henrys, Edwards & Richards sorted out... but you can't look at the family tree & go "well, it's clearly that guy!"- or girl, as you say. Like, obviously the question of descent through the female line was huge, & hugely unclear, especially as they were trying to decide retrospectively, & attitudes to female-line inheritance had been changing since Edward III's time. Retrospective arguments when attitudes had changed were also a problem when it came to illegitimacy. I recently read a book about illegitimate children in later Mediaeval England, & OMG, it's complicated- a lot of the arguments people make about the legitimacy of various people in the Wars of the Roses actually make no sense, & some things are the absolute opposite to what we'd assume.
The genealogy is nuts. I'm just putting together the video for next week and I'm going to need to put in so many family trees to help people keep up. There are so many York cousins! Legitimacy is interesting too. William the Conqueror was illegitimate for instance, but it certainly didn't slow him down and there's the very real argument that all of Edward IV's children, plus Elizabeth I were illegitimate.
Everything about a claim to the throne by blood is through women, the Red and White Queens. Claiming through conquest then becomes stronger in the Medieval context.

Margaret Pantagenet Pole is my fav her and Richard iii. I dont blame her father and Mother for being so crazed with anger toward Edward iv his marriage to Elizabeth should never been allowed to Stand for various reasons one of which he was already married second of all he has a responsibility to parliament and the people. He was a selfish sexual deviant. Many women in the day had to marry as they where told. If he loved her so much he should have given the crown to his brother and went and lived happily ever after. Parliament is there for a reason as are the laws and rules which he ignored when it suited him.
I think Henry was a VERY Lucky usurper with a determined mum with all the connections and craftiness. He turned out to be stabiliser of England . If there was no challenge from Richard P & Richard's son had not died, there would be a far different history of course - and I further surmise the unfortunate Arthur may have been a better king than H8. **** THANK YOU I love your U-tube lectures in that you supply additional data and context and your narrative is a pleasure to listen to.

Not only listening to an academic but reading some of the comments offers insights of interest to this history buff. I do think Henry deserved the throne. He really fought & worked for it, and if there is a god then he was surely looking out for Henry considering how many times he came so close to death and lived and how much smaller his army was at the final battle.
Yes, he really had to work hard for it. Funnily enough, I think it's the monarchs like him who nearly don't get to the throne for one reason or another (Charles II, Elizabeth I, George VI and even Elizabeth II for instance) who make the best monarchs.
Henry VII is rapidly becoming my favorite Tudor monarch. He brought stability to a country that had been in dynastic turmoil for decades and also seemed to have a decent relationship with his wife. Plus, I love a good underdog. 😅
Very interesting, albeit confusing. It reminds me some of Henry I coming to the throne when he had virtually nothing to begin with. If you consider what I read in "The White Boat," that his son, Henry II, began the Plantagenet line, we can see two of the Henrys beginning lines that intersected in 1485. Fun. 😂😂
Throughout the 1470s and early 1480s, Edward IV was ever trying to have Henry Tudor returned to England. While it's true that, at first, he likely intended to kill Henry, I've come to believe that toward the end of his life, Edward was convinced by Henry's supporters in court (including Henry's mother) to make a legit offer to marry him to Edward's daughter. I think it started as a ruse, but became a serious offer, to neutralize Henry. Edward's death threw that plan into a cocked hat.
This is video is excellent, though it is complicated as you stated. But I so much appreciate all of the work and research you put into it. May I make a suggestion? You give a detailed account of the Battle of Bosworth, (as you did with Henry's travles from Wales to England), and graphics showing the moves that were made during the battle would really help your Tudor fans to appreciate it all the more. Though I'm still 'foggy' about the Tudor line and everyone branched in and out of it, I believe Henry the VII was the rightful King.

Hi, I was a little confused because early on you say Henry VII has no real claim to the throne, yet later that his claim posed a threat to Richard III. Don't know if was in this video or another, but would love some clarification of this point.
He didn't really have any great claim through his bloodline, due to being descended from an illegitimate line of John of Gaunt, however by the time we get to Bosworth, so many of the other claimants are dead that Henry, as the senior surviving male member of the House of Lancaster and someone who is able to get an army together, becomes the best viable alternative. Factor in that he was engaged to Elizabeth of York as well and he was a real threat by that point.
When Henry Tudor promised to marry Elizabeth of York at the Cathedral of Rennes on Christmas Day 1483 (after his 1st attempted invasion of England) he obviously did not know that she and her brothers had been declared either illegitimate or unlawful claimants to the crown, which was only ratified by an Act of Parliament in 1484. Richard therefore could not have made an announcement of his nephew Edwards' illegitimacy as a reason for accepting the crown in June 1483 but rather the disputed legality of Edward IV's descendant's as heirs His reason was the legitimacy of Edward IV, not Edward V
Titulus Regius only ratified the Parliamentary declaration of 1483 that Edward's marriage was bigamous and his children illegitimate. It's my understanding that it was ratified because the entity that had heard the evidence and made a decision based upon it was not a Parliament. When doubts arose about, it Parliament ratified when convened in 1484. So I think it's quite possible Henry knew about his future bride's status when he promised to marry her. Perhaps it was of no moment in any event, as he soon legitimized her any way. I'm not sure how fully Richard's account of Edward's not being his full brother was believed, or since Edward had been fully accepted, anointed, and crowned as king, whether it made a great deal of difference.

I think Henry was a usurper with only the flimsiest claim to the crown, and he knew it which is why he married the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Woodville. He was a lucky man. I think his mother was fascinating and must've been part of the reason for his success.

@@HistoryCalling Richard was not a usurper Edward was married when he married Elizabeth and he did so against Parliament. Edward made one selfish decision after another with Elizabeth. Edwards sons where not legitimist whether his first wife was dead or not when his son was born he married when he was already married plain and simple. Even if Edward was born after his first wife died his marriage was still not valid if he married her wile already married its not like he married her again once his first wife died.
Henry actually wasn't living with his mother. She had to leave him behind with his uncle shortly after he was born so she could go remarry. When she left to remarry she wasn't allowed to take him with her. Pretty sure the uncle dipped out and left him there by himself when Edwards guys stormed the place and that's when they snatched him up.

I’ve long been a fan of Katherine Swynford - she really had no defence against John of Gaunt who wooed her with single minded intensity! On the other hand, nor did Elizabeth Woodville against Edward IV! These two lines were bound to conflict and I’m unable to pick a side, although Henry VII really had no claim on the throne of England, although he DID (imho) have a claim, however tenuous, to the throne of France via his mother, Katherine of Valois! I’m glad RichardIII’s remains were found and he has been interred in York Cathedral.
Katherine of France was Henry's grandmother; his mother was the formidable Margaret Beaufort. His claim to the French throne was indeed pretty weak, since the it could only be inherited down a male line under Salic law. Richard III was re-interred in Leicester Cathedral.
I always felt like Henry the 7th was to be pitied even though he won at the battle of boswick and became king of England. He might have had power and fame but his personal life was marred by sadness and loss....loss of his oldest son and wife...in his later years he grew suspicious of almost everyone and died a sad lonely old man What good is a kingship if it comes with a never ending struggle to defend your crown?
I know. Everything was a struggle for him for such a long time. He and his story were the loose basis for the character of Daenerys in Game of Thrones and you can really see it when you look at their struggles in exile, loss of family and later paranoia.

The opulence of royalty and a life of excess is never a ticket to feel secure/safe at any time. I'm sure time went slow as delivering news between realms meant arduous journeys so battle plans and take over plots were always "in transit". You had to stay ten steps ahead. I suppose it was kill or be killed. He probably couldn't just go and farm a patch of land somewhere peacefully. Even if the contender themselves weren't interested, there were always plotters around them. It seems unbelievably tiresome to me, but then I'm not fascinated by material gains. Henry had the right but not as he did use force against the true kIng. His mother Beaufort had cleared all stoppages and resistance and had the stronger motive for killing both Princes to place her son on the throne at last Interesting she entered a nunnery in order to clean her soul. Morton told us where the bodies lay exactly. Morton great friends with Beaufort and Stanley offered last rites and was there when the boys died . Richard was the obvious villain and it worked so well against him at the last battle on earth he fought bravely and lost by treasonable Stanley and many of his like .Henry never fought he was an accountant only He helped with Britains wealth but still say he had a nerve to try it

I still have to say that I loved The Tudors, as well as all of the offshoots, such as The Red and White Princess, Spanish Princess, etc. They are well done enough to keep someone who knows and enjoys the history, swept up and busy with the topic!
I don't understand why they changed the actual facts, as the real ones were, in fact, fascinating enough on its own! I just really appreciated and enjoyed the casting. And still have those actors in mind when I listen to podcasts, etc., such as these!
Henry the Seventh is such a complicated and fascinating historical figure. It’s great to see his story being covered here. He’s my favorite Tudor and he often gets eclipsed by his more widely-known descendants, in spite of the fact that his reign stabilized England after a tumultuous period. Maybe that’s why he’s not as well-known: once he was in power, he was relatively normal, pragmatic and not one for scandal or glittering displays of wealth.
Yes. During his lifetime, Edward IV's government tried several times to gain custody of Henry Tudor, Duke of Richmond, while Henry was living on the Continent. Henry was making increasingly narrower escapes from English royal custody. What would have happened to him if Edward IV or Richard II had gotten their hands on him is anyone's guess.
Of all the Tudor monarchs, I would love to have met Henry vii. He’s never gotten the recognition that I think he deserves. He worked damn hard to secure the thrown which took bravery, good leadership, etc. although not that popular he stabilized the treasury, implemented laws to strengthen centralized government led by no favorites but by his own strength of character. God knows what happened with his son. I know the first 20 yrs or so he was the “Golden Boy”but his actions later spoke of a callous mercurial Narcissist.
The story of Henry’s mother Margaret B is amazing. A series on her would be good.
Then you MUST watch " THE WHITE QUEEN " and second " THE WHITE PRINCESS " . They're both are simply beyond.........

In my view, Henry had no choice but to take the throne, as the only alternative would have been to die at the hands of the Yorkists. His close blood ties to the vanquished House of Lancaster made him too much of a threat for Richard III, or any potential Yorkist successor, to spare. Had he not invaded, he would have been hunted down eventually. If his invasion had been defeated, the best Henry could have hoped for was a death in battle similar to Richard's historically, or, at worst, capture by Richard and the extremely gruesome execution reserved for those regarded as traitors.
Thanks for a spot on an underrated king. He was completely overshadowed by his wife killing son, and his charismatic granddaughter. His story is, well, quite a story! His mum, too.

Given that King Arthur as a name is now legendary and mythological (Briton and not Saxon?), given that it is not used as a royal name because of the horrific circumstance of Henry VIII's brother, and given that if Arthur Tudor had not died, history would be very, very different.
There are times I feel like noting down all the instances that increased division between these islands but I think I'm just a layman and would be reinventing the wheel. But also it's information that more people should be privy to. Then it wouldn't be privy.
@@Al_Ellisande from what I’ve read the legendary Arthur was most likely around in the period after Rome had left and was a Briton who fought invaders from Europe and had some success. From there the legend continued and was popularised in the Middle Ages.

are very inaccurate historically.
Although Margaret Beaufort was Henry's greatest supporter.
The fact that Margaret didn't like her mother or her husband Stafford is inaccurate, so too was her killing of the princes in the tower.
It makes for a good dramatic story by Philipa Gregory.
So is the so-called curse on the person who killed the princes made by the Dowager Queen and Elizabeth York.
Knowing by then that if it could fall on her grandchildren.
The books by Philipa Gregory are historical fiction.
And this is certainly true for her portrail of Margaret Beaufort.
Every good story needs a hero and a villan.
In Philipa Gregory's books Margaret Beaufort is the Villan, but it is not an honest depiction of the real Margaret Beaufort.
Just like Jaqeata Rivers and Elizabeth Woodville did not practice witchcraft to decide the outcomes of battles or calling up storms that led to a miscarriage.

Fascinating! I didn't know all those events in Henry's early life, especially not how much danger he was in in Brittany & France.
To answer the question, I think he was both, in a sense, but "no claim to the throne" is debatable- the whole concept of a "rightful claim" isn't clear-cut. In the end, Henry claimed the throne by right of conquest, with the extra qualification of marrying Elizabeth. You could also say he usurped the throne, just as Edward IV, Richard III & Henry IV had done, but once that was done, he was king & remained so til his death, passing the throne to his son. If you DO look at his claim by his ancestry, I don't _think_ it's 100% certain that the Beauforts were barred from ever taking the throne, but correct me if I'm wrong. And however "obscure" his connection was, he was the nearest adult male Lancastrian by that point.
If the Yorkists wanted to kill him even before he attempted to take the throne, then I agree- if he didn't have a chance of living safely, much less returning to England safely, that would've pushed him in the direction of trying to take the throne- better to die trying than be assassinated or executed when he wasn't even working against the crown.
I didn't know a lot about him, especially his early life either when I began. I think he gets overlooked a lot because of how famous his son Henry and granddaughter Elizabeth were, but his tale is fascinating. He and Elizabeth could have traded stories about their rocky paths to the throne actually (though I think Henry would have had her beat). Yes, I agree that at this point in time, the concept of a claim to the throne was quite fluid. There were so many Yorkist usurpations that Richard can hardly have been surprised when someone came to do the same to him. The Beauforts had theoretically been barred, but you're correct that there was some question over the legality of the barring. Of course, there would also be some question over legitimising children born out of wedlock, as that undermined the whole point of wedlock. Plus, if they'd been living in a less sexist world, it actually would have been Lady Margaret Beaufort who had the stronger Lancastrian claim, as she was the senior family member. A very complicated family and line of succession indeed :-)

I knew almost nothing about him, but getting interested in the Wars of the Roses, & hearing people call Henry VII the worst person in history (along with his mother), & a couple of other things got me curious about him, & he's really interesting & I quite like him. I love genealogy, so sorting that out actually drew me to the Wars of the Roses! :D It's what I cling to to half-understand it, & I've mostly got my Henrys, Edwards & Richards sorted out... but you can't look at the family tree & go "well, it's clearly that guy!"- or girl, as you say. Like, obviously the question of descent through the female line was huge, & hugely unclear, especially as they were trying to decide retrospectively, & attitudes to female-line inheritance had been changing since Edward III's time.
Retrospective arguments when attitudes had changed were also a problem when it came to illegitimacy. I recently
read a book about illegitimate children in later Mediaeval England, & OMG, it's complicated- a lot of the arguments people make about the legitimacy of various people in the Wars of the Roses actually make no sense, & some things are the absolute opposite to what we'd assume.
The genealogy is nuts. I'm just putting together the video for next week and I'm going to need to put in so many family trees to help people keep up. There are so many York cousins! Legitimacy is interesting too. William the Conqueror was illegitimate for instance, but it certainly didn't slow him down and there's the very real argument that all of Edward IV's children, plus Elizabeth I were illegitimate.
Everything about a claim to the throne by blood is through women, the Red and White Queens. Claiming through conquest then becomes stronger in the Medieval context.

I’m ready for some Plantagenet videos! I’m a direct descendent of Margaret Plantagenet Pole. Very interested in how the family tree connects the British and French royal families, too.
Margaret Pantagenet Pole is my fav her and Richard iii. I dont blame her father and Mother for being so crazed with anger toward Edward iv his marriage to Elizabeth should never been allowed to Stand for various reasons one of which he was already married second of all he has a responsibility to parliament and the people. He was a selfish sexual deviant. Many women in the day had to marry as they where told. If he loved her so much he should have given the crown to his brother and went and lived happily ever after. Parliament is there for a reason as are the laws and rules which he ignored when it suited him.
You should do a video on his wife, Elizabeth of York especially on her possible involvement in the plot to bring him to England.
She's next on my list actually, for my women of the Wars of the Roses series.

I think Henry was a VERY Lucky usurper with a determined mum with all the connections and craftiness. He turned out to be stabiliser of England . If there was no challenge from Richard P & Richard's son had not died, there would be a far different history of course - and I further surmise the unfortunate Arthur may have been a better king than H8.

I do think Henry deserved the throne. He really fought & worked for it, and if there is a god then he was surely looking out for Henry considering how many times he came so close to death and lived and how much smaller his army was at the final battle.
Yes, he really had to work hard for it. Funnily enough, I think it's the monarchs like him who nearly don't get to the throne for one reason or another (Charles II, Elizabeth I, George VI and even Elizabeth II for instance) who make the best monarchs.

Henry VII is rapidly becoming my favorite Tudor monarch. He brought stability to a country that had been in dynastic turmoil for decades and also seemed to have a decent relationship with his wife. Plus, I love a good underdog. 😅

Very interesting, albeit confusing. It reminds me some of Henry I coming to the throne when he had virtually nothing to begin with. If you consider what I read in "The White Boat," that his son, Henry II, began the Plantagenet line, we can see two of the Henrys beginning lines that intersected in 1485. Fun. 😂😂
Throughout the 1470s and early 1480s, Edward IV was ever trying to have Henry Tudor returned to England. While it's true that, at first, he likely intended to kill Henry, I've come to believe that toward the end of his life, Edward was convinced by Henry's supporters in court (including Henry's mother) to make a legit offer to marry him to Edward's daughter. I think it started as a ruse, but became a serious offer, to neutralize Henry. Edward's death threw that plan into a cocked hat.

This is video is excellent, though it is complicated as you stated. But I so much appreciate all of the work and research you put into it. May I make a suggestion? You give a detailed account of the Battle of Bosworth, (as you did with Henry's travles from Wales to England), and graphics showing the moves that were made during the battle would really help your Tudor fans to appreciate it all the more. Though I'm still 'foggy' about the Tudor line and everyone branched in and out of it, I believe Henry the VII was the rightful King.

Hi, I was a little confused because early on you say Henry VII has no real claim to the throne, yet later that his claim posed a threat to Richard III. Don't know if was in this video or another, but would love some clarification of this point.
He didn't really have any great claim through his bloodline, due to being descended from an illegitimate line of John of Gaunt, however by the time we get to Bosworth, so many of the other claimants are dead that Henry, as the senior surviving male member of the House of Lancaster and someone who is able to get an army together, becomes the best viable alternative. Factor in that he was engaged to Elizabeth of York as well and he was a real threat by that point.

When Henry Tudor promised to marry Elizabeth of York at the Cathedral of Rennes on Christmas Day 1483 (after his 1st attempted invasion of England) he obviously did not know that she and her brothers had been declared either illegitimate or unlawful claimants to the crown, which was only ratified by an Act of Parliament in 1484.
Richard therefore could not have made an announcement of his nephew Edwards' illegitimacy as a reason for accepting the crown in June 1483 but rather the disputed legality of Edward IV's descendant's as heirs
His reason was the legitimacy of Edward IV, not Edward V
Titulus Regius only ratified the Parliamentary declaration of 1483 that Edward's marriage was bigamous and his children illegitimate. It's my understanding that it was ratified because the entity that had heard the evidence and made a decision based upon it was not a Parliament. When doubts arose about, it Parliament ratified when convened in 1484. So I think it's quite possible Henry knew about his future bride's status when he promised to marry her. Perhaps it was of no moment in any event, as he soon legitimized her any way.
I'm not sure how fully Richard's account of Edward's not being his full brother was believed, or since Edward had been fully accepted, anointed, and crowned as king, whether it made a great deal of difference.

I think Henry was a usurper with only the flimsiest claim to the crown, and he knew it which is why he married the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Woodville. He was a lucky man. I think his mother was fascinating and must've been part of the reason for his success.

@@HistoryCalling Richard was not a usurper Edward was married when he married Elizabeth and he did so against Parliament. Edward made one selfish decision after another with Elizabeth. Edwards sons where not legitimist whether his first wife was dead or not when his son was born he married when he was already married plain and simple. Even if Edward was born after his first wife died his marriage was still not valid if he married her wile already married its not like he married her again once his first wife died.
Henry the 7th looks VERY VERY FRIENDLY.....
Henry actually wasn't living with his mother. She had to leave him behind with his uncle shortly after he was born so she could go remarry. When she left to remarry she wasn't allowed to take him with her. Pretty sure the uncle dipped out and left him there by himself when Edwards guys stormed the place and that's when they snatched him up.

I’ve long been a fan of Katherine Swynford - she really had no defence against John of Gaunt who wooed her with single minded intensity! On the other hand, nor did Elizabeth Woodville against Edward IV! These two lines were bound to conflict and I’m unable to pick a side, although Henry VII really had no claim on the throne of England, although he DID (imho) have a claim, however tenuous, to the throne of France via his mother, Katherine of Valois! I’m glad RichardIII’s remains were found and he has been interred in York Cathedral.
Katherine of France was Henry's grandmother; his mother was the formidable Margaret Beaufort. His claim to the French throne was indeed pretty weak, since the it could only be inherited down a male line under Salic law. Richard III was re-interred in Leicester Cathedral.
I always felt like Henry the 7th was to be pitied even though he won at the battle of boswick and became king of England. He might have had power and fame but his personal life was marred by sadness and loss....loss of his oldest son and wife...in his later years he grew suspicious of almost everyone and died a sad lonely old man
What good is a kingship if it comes with a never ending struggle to defend your crown?
I know. Everything was a struggle for him for such a long time. He and his story were the loose basis for the character of Daenerys in Game of Thrones and you can really see it when you look at their struggles in exile, loss of family and later paranoia.
