Mario was an exceptional fast bowler . He was often referred to as the Devon Malcolm of Sri Lanka . Had a slinging action too . Another prospect who wasn’t given a chance at national level .
very good interview and its nice to see an expert give their take, as a fitness enthusiast (not claiming to be like Mario in anyway) all of this makes sense and its based on logic. Hopefully SLC can actually look to get Mario back and work within the high performance to improve the standard of players coming through. If a player has an elite athlete mentality in terms of fitness their skill will take over at even higher intensity making them better. Kohli is a great example of an elite athlete with extreme levels of fitness enhancing his performance. Anyway hope to see Mario involved soon!
Another point to be added to Mr.Roshan’s question with regard to current players and old players load. There is no doubt that the volume and intensity of the cricket is way higher than what is used to be back then. For an example, if you take 2023 season, guys played 10 3 day games, 10 days, 4 t20s only within domestic season. And we continue to NSL where we are playing 8 4 day games and 4 one day games. That’s a lot of cricket. A good example I can give is Nisala Tharaka, fast bowler who bowlers over 400 overs in 2023 season without NSL. That’s includes practice, warm up games & games. If a guy is within the national set up, they play less first class cricket, but they had chronic history of playing a lot of domestic cricket. Plus they play high intense white ball cricket t20s and Odis with franchise cricket which includes a lot of traveling. Also, the current culture is completely different from what we had back in the time where the names you mentioned played. Very less screen time, less fast food , active lifestyle and overall better culture and lifestyle which supports recovery better. So there are many factors we have more injuries now than before.
Also, there is an under training part where fast bowlers don’t get to bowl a lot so they are under trained for the load of international cricket. Except 2-3 fast bowlers , most have bowled less than 140 overs in the entire season due to the dominance of spinners.
guys like mario is not utilising to the maximum levels by authorities due to personal reasons in authorities. keep it up and good luck for future as one day they will need you back in the system.
Mario did not answered the very valid question Roshan raised properly. Those days players played more cricket than current players due to county. But they injured less. Nowadays only T20 is played more but more injuries. Mario did not crack the answer properly. He has not undestood the reason. That is why we have still so many injuries.

Very insightful! Just putting into a perspective where a general cricket fan can understand what is S&C! Top lad Mario Aiya 🫡
