Further to your point about blocking threads, I think that blocking a thread when it requests for external means from the kernel will block the entire process. However, if the thread is blocked internally e.g. due to synchronization, it won't block the entire process?

In the operating system book by Silberschatz and Galvin, they say "Multithreading an interactive application may allow a program to continue running even if part of it is blocked or is performing a lengthy operation, thereby increasing responsiveness to the user." This is kind of contradictory to what you said. Can you clarify this?
