  • Welcome back to the channel. Enjoy todays project as we get into informative repairs, money saving, and thrifty ways to help you in your projects. My apologies for the noise of children. Making impromptu clips with 5 kids can be challenging. My set up is for use in a chicken egg incubator as the add on from the farm store added $65 at the time when I made this video. I made my own conversion for under $15 with the fan, plug, wire nuts, and electric tape. Here is a link to a fan for your project: amzn.to/3FM4DYN

    A much better way of connecting your wires is to strip more of the plastic cover off each wire, curve each wire into a U shape, hook the appropriate wires to each other then wrap the wires. Now you can just wrap the whole with electrical tape. No need for caps. Now if you accidentally pull too hard on the connection it won’t pull apart. I learned this after fixing my vacuum cable several times, lol.

      Thats an old method for sure. My step dad used to do that too, he was born in 1925. I think the method is good but safety in mind you need wire nuts.

    FYI I used a non-polarized (both plugs small) 12v 1.2a AC adapter and it worked with an 80mm fan regardless of which wires I connected to the red and black fan wires. Also the AC adapter worked with the fan when plugged in right side up or upside down. So as far as I can tell the red and black wires are interchangeable when connecting to an AC adapter. The fan spin direction wasn't affected either. Going to chain a bunch together for an air purification system in my office. =)

    So the average cellphone charger is between 3v and 5v but computer fans are 12v BUT: they are DC motors which makes them Variable speed based on voltage. If you run the motor in this way it will actually last longer.
    Im very impressed with your ingenuity @mommymilestones. This would never occur to most people. The next tier would be to grab a variable resistor online, a breadboard and a 12v powersupply. If you wire those things up to your fan you could get a dial or a slider that speeds the fan up or slows it down. great for finding a sweet spot on your next incubator build. keep in mind that theres tons of newer open source products like the Arduino. that can have temperature sensors that can tell the incubator to turn off the heat and kick on the fan. I really find micro controller and their applications in argroculture use to be something that could revolutionalize the industry because these controllers are so darn cheap compared to buying an "incubator" they can even be used to construct alarms. I built a system for my uncle that tells him the status of all the doors in his barn and alerts him when his chickens get spooked. a great resource is Sparkfun electronics.

      The step up booster I use is less than $5 and it just has a little screw that you turn to adjust the voltage. So weather you have a 5v fan or a 12v fan you can run it at whatever speed you want using any DC plug less than 32v. (making sure your output voltage doesn't exceed the capacity of the fan you're using). There are some step up boosters that are even cheaper but this is the one I bought, it worked, so I stuck with it.

The only issue with using an old phone cord is that the phone cord can only make 5 volts, so using a 12 volt fan will not put the fan at its full potential. I would recommend you use a booster that way you can still get full potential out of using a phone cord.

  • @kirkmcintyre5745

    Your fan is going to run slow anyway. You have a 5v cell phone charger running a 12v fan. You can either try finding a 12v DC adapter (some laptops etc. use them) or try connecting the fan to a Step Up Booster -
    www.banggood.com/4A-XL6009E1-Adjustable-DC-DC-Step-Up-Boost-Converter-Power-Supply-Module-p-1175699.html?rmmds=myorder&cur_warehouse=USA
    - then the cell phone charger to the other side of that step up booster. You'll then be able to run the fan at full capacity or even vary the fan speed by simply turning the screw on the step up booster that controls the voltage. Just be careful not to go higher than 12v. Also, for anyone else watching this, not all fans are 12v. READ THE LABEL! There you'll see what capacity the fan is set for and if it's 5v than a cell phone charger is all it can handle.
    Wow, I didn't realize how old this video was. I guess you probably figured this out by now.

    does change in adapter amps and fan amps matter?

    • @XSFx5
      @XSFx5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Need max amperage of the AC-to-DC inverter (power brick) to be greater than or equal to the combined max amperage of the fan. Due to electrical resistance the fan will only draw so many amps and it draws the most amps (current) when it's starting up (takes a bit more current to get it spinning), but if you draw too many amps you'll burn out your inverter power supply, which is bad and unsafe. So better to have extra available amps than not enough. To control speed, you alter the voltage (V). Most computer fans are 12V DC.

      I realise it's a year later, but I think the one on the link is the same as mine, and its got a metal body & metal fins unlike normal computer fans which are plastic, hence the difference in price

    What should I do if I have 2fans? Can I just run them both into the same 12volt plug?

    • @mommymilestones
      @mommymilestones  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need two plugs because the two fans together are more than the the 12 volt plug can handle.

      @@stariz100 no one fan requires 12v so 2 is looking at 24 you would need something putting out more voltage or 2 separate boxes if you do experiment with this please use a portable power box of some sort and dont plug into your wall house insurance only covers accidents and not things like this

      The plug top she is using has a transformer in it so the wires are only supplying 2-5v. Worst that would happen is it would stop working.

      Yeah don't plug the fan right into a live AC power outlet, like FireRedder did. And don't short circuit the wires by having the exposed conductor/metal parts touch each other. Also she had good advice about soldering AFTER testing it once to ensure you have it working.

    #waysmommycankillfamilywithelectricalfire #waystomakeitlooklikeaccident #whywomanshouldsticktolaundry. congrats, your not color blind and can pair a negative and positive color coded wire. yay! fuuun fact for the gifted: when a motor needs to chooch; increasing or decreasing recommended voltage WILL CHANGE amperage. well ur phone charger is 5v and fan is 12v. DRASTICALLY pulling much higher amps to account for lose of voltage starts fires. notice the tiny thin wires in your charging cord??? pump that f-er with the amperage you are and notice it getting hot and flismy? add a himnt of moisture and let her arch and burn. good idea for fire starter bad idea for everything else. u should take this down for liability and peace of mind that you arent killing someones chickens and/or family
