You give a good picture of the island; it is very different from what I imagined. I have never heard about the wild horses. The stray dogs; obviously not as scary aa they looked! Loved the sunset scenes. Thanks from Norway and Larvik; the birth town of Thor Heyerdahl.
+Kari H Thank you! Those were some of the biggest surprises for us as well. We knew we'd encounter wild horses but we didn't realize how many there would be. Also, the stray dogs were wonderful companions and all very friendly. No dogs barked at us the entire time we were on the island :)
Thank you for sharing this video. I am Chilean, I lived in the USA (Los Angeles, CA) for 30 years. I now live in beautiful Viña del Mar and my partner and I are going to Rapa Nui to celebrate his birthday next month (May), can't wait.
Rarely am I envious of anyone but this has me a bit envious! I followed you guys to Peru - Lima, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu, and headed to Rio in a couple months! This has me considering Chile and Easter Island for sometime next year! Thank you for the inspiration! Very well done!
I just loved your week long video! You guys are SUCH a cute couple traveling and seeing the world! Thank you ever so much for doing your video,as it really showed me what the island was like to do on your own.I hope the two of you have a long life together to see the world!! you guys are geting better and better at shooting footage and editing! My wife and I will be in Easter Island in 14 days. Your video encourages me to rent a car. thanks for the tips. I also watched your Lima videos. that was great.
Having been to both, you'll love them! Be sure and go to Milford Sound, take a ski plane and land on Franz Joseph Glacier, take a jet boat ride in Queenstown. I was there 30 yrs ago so my memory is not as sharp as it was.
My wife and I are planning a trip there in January 2022. Your video was very informative and well presented. We are now going to extend our stay from 3 days to at least 5 days to make sure we see as much as we can. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video - it was really well put together. Not too long, not too short - it's rare I watch stuff like this and don't end up "zapping" through a lot of it. I'm retiring within the next year or two, and plan to go off more or less immediately on a world tour of "odd" islands, and of course Easter Island is top of the list. Your video has only cemented its place there, and you've given me plenty to think about on the subject. I appreciate your advice of taking at least 4-7 days there and highly doubt if I will take less than 7. Thank you again.
That's all I want to get there!!! It's my dream to see Rapa Nui ! I've really enjoyed your video... It gave me a great overview of all the information... Thanks!
Audrey and Samuel, thanks so much for sharing all your travel videos. I have been watching all your videos on South America as we are going in a couple of months. Hope one day can go to Easter Island. Please continue to share more whenever you guys travel. Great Work!!!
Yes, very exciting as this will be our first trip to SA. We will fly to Rio and spend 3 nights explore this city before taking a 14N cruise going to BA, Montevideo, Falkland Islands, Ushuaia, Punta Arenas, and ending at Valparaiso. We will visit Santiago for a week before going home. I watched your You Tube videos on both Valparaiso and Santiago and taken down notes to where to visit and eat. Thanks much! Am considering if we should fly to Easter Island from Santiago for at least a few days...
Jeez. Paul from Paisley here. I have followed you guys for years, but this is the first time I have stumbled over this... Makes me wonder what other Gems I've missed 😂
The part of the couple was played with gusto and verve and the dogs had a delightful cameo role. It was a puckish satire of contemporary mores, a droll spoof aimed more at the heart than the head. As for me I'm planning on spending the next three days in a brothel.
Hi guys! It was an awesome video, I immediately took this video to my playlist to watch again it later. Me and my love are planning to go there someday, I hope we will succeed. Thank you for showing us this particular island, and encouraging us to go there. Amazing work!!
As I saw the title, it did surprised me that you guys visited Easter Island. It was such an unexpected destination at least for me. The video quality and camera movements are indeed significantly improved.
+TheHongfei Thank you very much! We made sure to upgrade our gear before this particular trip and we're traveling lighter and we're more happy with the results of the footage. We kind of kept this a bit of a secret and it took a while for us to edit so we actually visited here before Buenos Aires.

Glad you mentioned it was March, I'll be going next March and the weather looks good. Thanks for a great little tour. Curious if you did any stargazing.
Looks like an interesting place. At least at the end you had a great week by looking at the video. it is only a place that I have visited in my flightsim quite a few time in the club that I am in, it has featured in at last 4 of our 10 World Tours. Also at the end a great pic of the take off and in the best viewing part of the plane. 5 rows behind the wings.
+Paul Lunn Thank you! Yes, it was overall a fantastic week. We lucked out by having great weather and we made the right decision to rent a car instead of taking tours. Not only did we get to see more of the island but we got to do it at our own pace.
was to Rapa Nui in January '16. We've seen other ancient cultural structures and artifact, and Rapa Nui is our favourite. We didnt know, but Carnival was occurring during our visit, which made each night spectacular. The entire island gathers in their traditional clothing and there are various artists that play from sundown until around 4 am. There are over 800 Moai scattered around the island. The day tours are ~$250 USD per person, and so is the rental of a vehicle. We took the vehicle. We went off road and found some areas not mentioned on a map; actually the maps are very archaic and rudimentary. There are also 3 (I think) places that are natural heritage sites and you will need a pass to enter. You can get them at the airport as you arrive. I would suggest that you stay as long as you can. Meet some of the locals, whom are very nice. The island is not 'touristy', so meet the people, some of whom may be Rapa Nui. If you go to the post office (main street to by) you can get a Rapa Nui stamp in your passport, kind of cool! You should be able to walk without difficulty if you want to enjoy the spender of this island. Although its small, if you just stop, get out of your vehicle, and wander, you will find many delights. We stayed at a hotel. As the lady says in the video, the accommodations are basic, but you have everything you need. Also you will need an adaptor for anything electronic. And for us, we had a bit of a medical issue and the hotel was well prepared to help us. Visit Isla de Pascua, you will not regret one moment.
We were nomadic for a few years. Instead of paying rent, car insurance, and all the bills we'd have living in one place, we opted to go on the road and spend that money travelling slowly.
Great video! Easter Island looks so pretty. It almost felt as if we were there with you guys! Just have a question, do you remember what the restaurant you went to at 13:43 was called? The food looks really good! Also, what is the ice cream placed called at 14:55. The Raspberry Ginger sounds delicious. looks really good! If I ever go, those places would seem nice to visit. Thank you.
Thanks Azaren! We wrote a couple of articles with more details of our trip: thatbackpacker.com/2016/04/28/easter-island-travel-itinerary/ thatbackpacker.com/2016/03/19/how-to-visit-easter-island-on-a-budget/
very nice.. it looks like we (my sister and I) stayed at the same cottages as you did but only at the one next to yours wich was for 2 people.. was near the cementery of the town (nice spot btw)... Cheers!
Thank you! That is cool to hear. Yeah, we really enjoyed our location and did a lot of walking during our time visiting even on the days we had a vehicle.
yes.. conveniently located given the price....next time you guys have to try the ana's (lava caves). there is one of them really amazing which ends at the edge of the cliff
Very nice. I'm booked for the first week of July for a week. A few questions if I may- what was the name of the cafe that you ate in? Price for a dish like the one you're having? Price for ice cream?
This is a place on my bucket list and thanks for bringing footage of your travels to Rapanui, a place that has fascinated and intrigued me to visit. I had imagined it to be a little off the civilization but it appears not so and very tourist friendly if you can make the effort to fly there. So will you guys make it to Tristan da Cunha you think?😀
Awesome job guys.Ahu Tongariki was destroyed by a tsunami in 1960, 9,5 earthquake in Chile, then the wave arrived to Hawai, Philippines, New Zealand, and Japan, many people died in there. The killer wave crossed de Pacific three time. In 80 years Ahu Tongariki was rebuilded by japanese corporation.
Hey guys, awesome video of the island. Definitely a place on my bucket list for sure! What part of the island did you stay on? I tried to find it in your video info but couldn't. Can you recommend any accommodation specifically, for example the one you guys stayed in? So many options!
Hey Guys, I love your videos, please keep up your good work. My wife and I are planning on an Easter Island trip this coming November. We are on a budget trip, so we are thinking that we can hike the trails on our own. Did you guys hire or purchased hiking tour on some of your hiking adventures? Thanks.
Hiring your own vehicle and doing in yourself is what we'd recommend to see most of the island. You can do the hiking by yourself for sure. You'll definitely save money doing it this way and to be honest it is nicer to be on your own schedule. I would only recommend the tours if you're pressed for time.
Thanks for the vid guys! Im going to Easter Island for 3 weeks! What restaurant is that on 13:43 and whats the ice cream place on 14:55 called? This video inspires me to go! Thanks :)
What an awesome video. We are in the process of planning a trip for December of this year. I have a question; On day 3 you talk about the Rapa Nui stamp that you just got in your passport. Did they not stamp your passport when you arrived? What does that particular stamp represent? Where did you get that one and how is it different?
Hi. I plan to visit the island in the second half of February 2019 with my 8 year old son. I begin by thanking this magnificent video that gave me a good view of the island. Let me put some questions to help me prepare my trip and stay. As for the accommodation, did you reserve it in advance or did that when you arrived on the island? Is the car the only vehicle that can be rented or is there another, for example a 4-wheel motorcycle? Does the rental of this vehicle have to be done in advance or can it be done directly on the spot? Is access to the tourist points free or is it necessary to purchase tickets to access them? I look forward to your response and thank you in advance. Thank you one more time.
Thank you! That is really exciting to hear. We reserved our place online a few weeks before arriving. I believe we used booking dot com. The car we reserved on the spot. I'm not entirely sure about motorcycles and atvs but would image they would have them. We booked the vehicle on the spot. It is easy to arrange by just going into town. Some are free but major ones have a fee. You can actually get a ticket for all access points on the island right after arriving from your flight or you can purchase entrance tickets at attraction.
My theory on how they moved the statues. They carved them and left a long narrow rectangular projection on the backs. They slid them on to a tract that resembles a sliding dimmer switch. They simply slid them down a cushioned pathway created out of Palm leaves saturated with beeswax thus a frictionless surface. Once the statues were down the mountain they used compressed beeswax slabs that were strapped or wedged into that angled space under the front base. Once the statues were in place the vein at the back was carved off and the base levelled the same way. To onlookers at the base of the mountain it would appear that the statues walked down the mountain.
Heading to Easter Island this April! We arrive on a Wednesday and have to leave on Saturday but will have two full days to explore! We are not hikers, being in our 70s! Any suggestions?
I would suggest renting a vehicle or signing up for a tour where you'll be taken to see the main attractions on the island. The island is small so if you have transportation you won't have to do that much walking.
Nice place. There's definitely a lot more to see than just the moai. I feel it's one of those places that's worth going through the hassle to get to. But a week seems excessive. 3 to 4 days would probably be enough, at least for me. But even with your one week, there's still a few things you guys missed. Is there public transport on the island or do you need to rent a car or take a tour? I agree with your statement in the description about this being one of those places you dream of, but never think you'll actually visit.
there is not public transportation on the island. There are not really taxis and no buses. You can still rent a car but the most of those places they went you cannot go to without a accredited guide. That's the big big change. Make sure you read all about that. I leave Thursday for there and have learned that most who have traveled since 2022 don't recommend a car anymore because you still need to hire a guide for anywhere you'd drive to.
Easter Island is on my bucket list. When is the best time of the year to get there and why? If I travel round trip directly from Fort Myers, Florida, the air fare alone is more or less $1,900. How much did you spent on food daily, the car rental and so on. I saw on your video that you paid $850 for the small house. Thanks!
You give a good picture of the island; it is very different from what I imagined. I have never heard about the wild horses. The stray dogs; obviously not as scary aa they looked! Loved the sunset scenes. Thanks from Norway and Larvik; the birth town of Thor Heyerdahl.

We wrote a couple of articles with more details of our trip:

very nice.. it looks like we (my sister and I) stayed at the same cottages as you did but only at the one next to yours wich was for 2 people.. was near the cementery of the town (nice spot btw)... Cheers!
Awesome
Thanks!
Thanks Sam! It is a magical place! We'd love to visit Tristan da Cunha someday.
+Facundo Manquehue Thank you very much! Really appreciate the background information and history.
Hey brilliant video. I am from the UK and want to go here ASAP once covid over. How would you be able to get to there from the UK 🇬🇧?
Thanks! Your best bet would be to get to Santiago, Chile. Likely some direct flights and then you'll have another long flight to Easter Island.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE UPLOAD! I've learned so much about this place and hope to visit soon.
Thanks Dan! Hope you can visit soon.
This is so great! Thank you for sharing. Do you mind my asking what kind of camera you used to film the vlogs?
+Rebecca Esther Thank you very much! We use an Olympus OMD-EM5 II and a Canon G7X.
thanks for sharing. what is the best month to visit easter island? is there any local simcard there?
Thanks for the vid guys! Im going to Easter Island for 3 weeks! What restaurant is that on 13:43 and whats the ice cream place on 14:55 called? This video inspires me to go! Thanks :)
What an awesome video. We are in the process of planning a trip for December of this year. I have a question; On day 3 you talk about the Rapa Nui stamp that you just got in your passport. Did they not stamp your passport when you arrived? What does that particular stamp represent? Where did you get that one and how is it different?
Thank you! It is just a special kind of tourist stamp but it is not related to border control.
Great. Thank you!
8:20 AM "THAT EARLY??" wow in my country sunrise occurs at 5:00 AM sometimes 4:40 AM, should I call that early or too late in the night? x'D lmao
Hahaha...I hear you!
Thanks!
A must see if you go to Chile
Totally agree!
