My dad was a bass man and his name was Charlie as well. He played with Claude Thornhill and Zoot Sims and did a little time with Kenton’s band. He turned me to the liberation orchestra. There were moments in the compositions that were nirvana to dad. Anything Charlie Haden plays hits hard with me. One of the chosen heart and souls of the truth and the truth is the highest compliment we can give to our bass players. This was a man who went to jail in Portugal because he made his musical dedication to the black peoples liberation movement in Mozambique. He was as honest and fearless in his thoughts as he was in his music. I count myself fortunate to see him play. Solid, compassionate, courageous and humble. Thanks for all of it Charlie Haden.
One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written...played to perfection by one of the most hauntingly beautiful bassists ever...RIP Mr. Haden, and thank you.
The country music background really comes through on this version.Who would imagine a country music musician being part of the birth of free jazz. CH is one of a kind
SHAUN,you're right about his quoting of several actually "country" type tunes. He did it while with Ornette,as did Texan Ornette himself. This performance,if anyone was in doubt shows what a MONSTER player he was.I met him in 1969 backstage with Ornette's band and my friend, also a bass player, asked him when he had taken up the bass.Charlie said when he was 17.He modestly omitted the fact that he began making music outta the cradle practically, with the Haden Family, who had a radio show that played throughout the Midwest (and which fellow Midwesterner and later collaborator Pat Metheny heard as a kid).Charlie is admirable for many reasons-his humility, his social activism(remember he got thrown in jail for his dedicating a song to African freedom fighters in a Portuguese performance) His huge catalogue of great music, his ego,if he even had one, placed on hold for the cause of music that would advance an inspire people.Remember that one of his decades-long projects was a "LIBERATION" orchestra. And by the way,he played his ass off.Buy any record he's on and you will do yourself a favor.
Jack DeJohnette, you are one of my heroes. Thank you for *so much music*-I was just playing an LP of “Tales of Another.” Just like Charlie, any record you’re on is an immediate purchase.
Drew Gress, you are one of my favorite bassists ever-the pizz sound you get is one of the fattest, most badass bass sounds around. So glad you stopped in to this video! I posted it a few days before Charlie passed away, having a weird premonition or something. Also check out the Lincoln Center duo with Paul Bley that I uploaded.
I have been given th3 Honor to study with him. N I’m a Drummer n Composer. I feel that it wasn’t the Bass Jazz or music in the End with him. It was GOD Speaking
What a moment. The sound of that hall and that bass. He used all of it to its fullest in his musical storytelling. Charlie had a lot of stories to tell through that bass and thankfully we get to hear the ones we missed in videos like this. Props for putting this up
Nobody can play with Heart n the Choice of notes and the Marianna trench Groove and Sound like Charlie. Hampton Hawes called him a Giant. Right on. Let’s aspire to be giants
R.I.P. to a musical giant. I saw him play three times, with Alice Coltrane, Old & New Dreams and Benny Carter - all amazing. Alice's performance with Charlie and Ben Riley (playing in a free jazz style more akin to Sunny Murray and Rashied Ali than his stellar work as Thelonious Monk's drummer) may be the single greatest concert I ever attended. Here's an excellent tribute by Eddie Muller (A.K.A. The Czar Of Noir). eatdrinkfilms.com/2014/07/23/its-about-beauty-man-my-film-fueled-friendship-with-jazz-legend-charlie-haden
Wow, man, those are three killer gigs. There's no recording of Charlie and Alice playing in trio other than just a tag-on track from the Village Gate. I'd give anything for a complete run of those shows... And Eddie Muller is a badass, too.
Hi Murat! Good to see you here. I’m a BIG fan of Charlie and Ornette, and was born in 1959 - a great year for new jazz 😎 Charlie has always been my favourite bass player. I did a homage to him on one of my videos.

He's really at the top of his game here. The sound is amplifided but still gorgeous. No one sounds like Charlie. A true legend.

Completely got the chills when he returned to the theme ....after taking us all over Everywhere!!!
Great video of Charlie...R.I.P brother
A 2 year old yodeling 1938. Became a Giant as Hampton Hawks said. Wow. Not the bass jazz or Music. God speaking thru ,
With him.
Lonely Woman is wearing the Precious Jewel. So beautiful! We´d like to hear more from that performance. R.I.P. Charlie Haden
What busy solo from Charlie! Always phenominal
The one and only! Singing his song through and through.

Charlie, merci, merci , merci ! quel bonheur d'entendre un solo pareil - pure merveille qui donne des forces
By himself or with a group Charlie was the most beautiful player. Whenever I listen to CH I feel so satisfied and enriched! Great post Dave!

Best!.
great
Don't forget Charlie and Ornette.
Forget them? I saw them at the Five Spot in1959. It was so intense that I couldn't sleep for 2 days... There are some advantages to being old. :-)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
hADEN cOLEMAN a mARAVILHA
Did he quote Leadbelly's John Hardy at 2:27???
Extra!!!!!
sounds like he's riffing on a Ledbetter tune around the 2:30 mark
Sounds to me like Woody Guthrie's "Jesus Christ," which Charlie and his family probably used to sing on their radio show.
Yeah ,that's the tune 'John Hardy'! He put it into lots of places over the years.
Charlie Haden aurait eu 80 ans aujourd'hui
another RIP.
He was sort of 17 at the time of the original recording. :))))

I do like the song very much btw.
