All cgi are not bad in the film. It is well known that the company making the fx went brankrupt during the production and numbers of effects were left unpolished. The glass tower fall is very well realised by 96 standards, same for the gigantic wave in the opening but other like the copters arrival or the sea cross were unpolished, textures are even missing!
I'm reminded, after watching this....anybody ever watch this movie and think "The President deliberately triggered that earthquake"? Seems like his prediction was TOO on the nose...
It did seem supicious. He predicted a major quake it targeted specifically the city and surrounding area it even seperated and then shortely after he gets to be president for life and turns the entire country into a christian police state. Yeah its likely he or somone he knows did something.
More likely he was going on loose timeframe scientific predictions like the Yellowstone Eruption, and his followers ignored that science predicted it first.
They almost made a sequel called "Escape for Earth", a concept that started in the 2000s, but because "Escape from LA" failed to pull in any money, the project was canceled. They were also planning on a TV series "Escape from New York" in July of 2000, but due to the September 11 attacks, it too was canceled.☹ 😢
It’s fun. Wouldn’t call it great, but once you accept the poor CGI for what it is as well as the laziness of the plot (in so much that this film is practically a remake of the original in the concept) you can begin to appreciate some of the finer qualities present. It’s far from perfect, but I don’t think it’s terrible.
The America in this movie is truly a dystopia. Near the end, Snake asks one of the army guys for a cigarette. The guy tells him, “The United States is a no-smoking nation. No smoking, no drinking, no drugs. No women - unless of course you're married. No guns, no foul language... no red meat.” They also seemed to ban all religions other than Evangelical Christianity.

The final arc of the series is "Escape from Cleveland," where Snake and a group of hired guns still the U.S. Bill of Rights from a Federal Reserve and try to escape the city. Easily the best arc of the series (and directly ties into this film).

Aside of the quite bad CGI I dont think the movie its bad, it actually takes the whole "post-apocalyptic" theme and treats it a bit better

I guess in this film fictional comedians made fun of the zealot LA speech. the quake strikes and kills the comedians. Then the Zealot gets elected and puts the remaining comedians into a military prison.
as an outspoken muslim therocrat, it is true that in real life, that if L.A. ever becomes a very sinful city, god will punish that sinful city by destroying it with a giant earthquake and have it to sink in to the ocean. i just that would never happen.

2021 Los Angeles is worst than Escape from LA
The movie has now reached classic status for a lot of good reasons. Personally, i think it is superior to the first one because it s a parody of it but the message is even darker and pessimistic (prophetic?). Just as gremlins 2 was the ultimate wtf gremlins experience parodying itself while highlighting society deviances
