    what is a "store pick" ?

    • @BourbonBlind
      @BourbonBlind  5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      These are stores or private groups that go to the distillery (or receive samples) of hand picked barrels and get to pick which one tastes the best to them.

    • @TheReal_DeanD
      @TheReal_DeanD 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      In addition to the definition below Store Picks of these wonderful Bourbons can be higher in price than the normal versions. In some cases only $4 more. In other cases $20+ more than the regular version. By me a store pick of 4 Roses Single Barrel sells for $58.99 vs the regular price of $34.99. Yes still cheaper than PVW but is it $24 better than the regular version I'm not sure.

      How does one tell that a bottle is store picked?

    • @BourbonBlind
      @BourbonBlind  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      With the Four Roses, the regular single barrel is 100 proof, where the store picks are barrel strength. They can also be different recipes than the standard OBSV

    • @BourbonBlind
      @BourbonBlind  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Penell, they usually have some sort of sticker on the bottle that denotes it as being a pick and not just the standard offering

    #5 - Old Weller Antique 107
    #4 - Belle Meade MGP Single Barrel Bourbon Cask Strength
    #3 - Four Roses Single Barrel Barrel Strength
    #2 - Russell's Reserve Single Barrel (Wild Turkey Masters Keep also)

    Thanks for the suggestions. I generally don't really expensive hard liquor because my pallet just isn't developed enough that the difference between a $50 bottle of 'good' spirits and a multi-hundred dollar bottle of 'great' spirits is noticable enough to justify the price difference. At least so far with bourbon and rum, one can still get a very good bottle in that price range or less. I just hope what happened with Scotch doesn't happen with those.

    I like the video & message here. Although I think Pappys is probably some of the best Bourbon I’ve had, it’s not worth the money on the secondary market. You have Blantons, Col Taylor, 4 Roses, Knob Creek that are exceptional at their under $50-100 price point. Even check out the Woodford Double oaked. Save some money and enjoy these. If you want to splurge a bit you have Weller 12 or even the 107, W Pig12 or 15, Angels Envy single barrel, Michters 10 yr. Ahhh so many to choose from between $60-200

HOWEVER, Four Roses Single Barrel is where it's at for me. It's spicy, has some complexity and that finish is amazing and stays with you. Knob Creek Single Barrel at 120 horsepower is actually quite sweet on the palate. When I first started working my way into bourbon that Knob Creek kicked my ass. Booker's has gotten over hyped as well. When I started drinking bourbon about 6-7 years ago, Booker's was around $45-50. Now it's at least $75-80 with special editions over $100. It's also younger than Knob Creek Single Barrel, but somewhat higher proof, but not that much more. Booker's is somewhat grassier and spicier, KC is sweeter and oakier. For the money though, I can get a couple KCSB for one Booker's.

    WT 101 cannot be beat for the price. Spend 100 bucks if you want. At $27 101 is an amazing value! I have the knob creek @120 and 4 Roses single and they are FANTASTIC. But double the price here in South Jersey over 101, but they're mine!, not making even my best Manhattan for the mother in law with them! That's what Rittenhouse is for! Or with a cigar! Remember don't waste your good stuff with a cigar, it's its own treat!! (p.s. I love Rittenhouse!!) But drinking The Classic Laddie now....so...thanks for the tips!

    I recently had a friend of mine pick me up a store pick of Russell’s Reserve single barrel in New Orleans. I told him to open it and drink some so by the time I get down there the flavor have time to open up. By the time I got this back to my home back in Dfw wow the bottle was amazing and paired with a Madura was a match made in heaven.

    I've spent most of the year finishing up a lot of mediocre open bottles, but I have two observations on your picks. 1) Store pick Russell's Reserve I found to be 'good' but puzzling in that it leans to the dark side flavors, but the flavors are undifferentiated, appearing a solid pool where no one thing stands out. Thus it gives an uninteresting experience that keeps reminding you it's a quality bourbon. Like I said, a puzzle. 2) Knob Creek (of any type), when subjected to blind tastings inevitably greatly outperforms expectations. Availability of the product actually punishes the reputation, which it gets back with actual use. 'Been drinking it for years.
    I scored a pile of the great A. H. Hirsch 16 & 20, some Black Maple Hill, and some other things in the years before the bust-out boom in bourbon and I simply regard them as too expensive to drink.
    The year's best surprise has been the Old Forrester 1920. Dark but lively unlike the RR (above). Biggest so what? was Henry McKenna and Wild Turkey 101 was added to Knob Creek as the "daily" (weekly) drinkers.

    • @BourbonBlind
      @BourbonBlind  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joey, you always have the most well thought out comments, and I truly enjoy them. I like the RR picks I've had, and like you said, the Knob Creek is one that always does well in blind tastings, and I think (as I said) is one of the best buys in bourbon right now. The 1920 this year has been fantastic, one of my favorites and could easily go on this list.

    I love this video. Especially the part where he says that pappy is not the end all be all of bourbon. My favorite bourbon ever is old rip van winkle 10. I think it's better than anything else in the van winkle lineup (although I haven't had the 23). However, I have to be honest. I've had all of these whiskies and i do not think any of them are better than pappy BUT (pitchforks down please) I do believe that these are some of the best pappy alternatives on the market (weller 107 being the best) and why I love this video is that it encourages people to try them because I do NOT believe that any of the van winkle line is worth any of the outrageous secondary prices. If I can get ALL of them at retail or a reasonable secondary I'm reaching for the pappy every time. However I would encourage everyone to never pay anything except maybe 50 percent above retail for pappy and if you can't find it for that go for one of these. They are close enough and are spectacular whiskies that you won't get robbed for

    1 wheated alternative that's literally the same mash bill? Belle Meade and Four Roses are both high rye bourbons, which is about as far from VW as you can get, and Russels and Knob are also very similar unwheated mash bills with i believe 13% barley a piece. It's a decent list of good bourbons but for a TRUE better alternative to the VW's I would've assumed the majority of the list would be wheated bourbons. If you're really hunting down an old oaky wheater, the last thing I'd recommend would be Four Roses, and I'm a fan of it.

    • @BourbonBlind
      @BourbonBlind  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The list wasn't really meant to be wheated alternatives, just other Bourbons that I consider better than PVW. There are some good wheaters out there that's not Buffalo Trace (PVW or Weller), just not my usual suspects or what I consider better. But some very valid points.

The only real comparison to Pappy are the Wellers etc. coming out of Buffalo Trace made with a similar or same mash bill. Now I agree the Weller Antique is a close substitute for Pappy's 10 & 12.
