James, your videos made me believe I could GM with no experience, just the ability to draw cartoons and make up goofy scenarios. Thanks, for always keeping it real.
I love your videos, they are a blast to watch. Also, you have genuinely taught me how to draw, a skill I could never master in 25+ years of dungeon mastering. Thank you so much!
small point, i'd make the headbutt ability allow them to move double near and attack. Far means they could can move any visible range and attack (like, say, from the horizon). Love the vibe of dragon town! it looks like such a fun book.
Another great resource for making monsters is "The Lazy DM's Forge of Foes". It's similar to the DMG's charts, but much more comprehensive (and accurate ;-}, numbers-wise). A lot of cool ideas in there!
For sure @jpcoovert, in my world the stats are very simple. The focus is o the story of why pcs are here and dealing with these critters, what is driving the critters to be aggressive, etc. Stats are miniscule focus for combat mostly.
Thanks for the vid JP! I totally agree, I love writing custom monsters when I write adventures. I was curious what the feed back has been on “statless monsters”?
How would this translate to converting to Tunnel Goons or Teenage/Ghost Goons? I think challenge level 1 would prob be 6 CP, challenge lv 2 9 cp, would challenge lv 3 be 12 cp and level 4 be 14 cp?
My favorite! The EASIEST game to convert stuff to. Just pick a difficulty score that makes sense. Boss monster is going to be harder, so a 12. Easier little creatures like Goatlins would be an 8. DONE!
@@JPCoovert I like to think that the difficulty in Tunnel Goons can be seen as how hard is the situation for PCs, I mean, what if they're facing a group of monsters all togheter? They can face many creaturs DC 8 or a DC 12 situation, with just a little adjustment: if a PC fails an attack, they all gonna suffer damage, something like that! Awesome content as always! Cheers!
@@JPCoovert Just got all the star borg stuff in the mail. Loved each one and happy with my purchase. If I wanted to convert Star Borg enemies to Tunnel Goons, what is the conversion there? If HP is 8 should I consider that as HD 1 or 2? Thanks.
@@Joshuadmathews Should be REALLY simple. In Tunnel Goons you just give an enemy a difficulty score. Easy = 8, Med = 10, Hard = 12. Just pick one based on the encounter/how many enemies there are.
@@JPCoovert Are there plans for other fun Tunnel Goons conversions/interpretations based on pop culture other than Turtles of Ghost Busters? Would love to see both continued material for Star Borg and Tunnel Goons. There' s a lot of fun film/tv/video games that could be dipped into for inspiration. Like something in the vein of Mario Cart / Aliens V Predators or Terminator type franchises and other sci-fi films that came out in response to Star Wars' fame, there might even be a market out there Pokemon type, or even Transformers. Ghost Busters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have similar box-office release dates so maybe a "brand" could be sticking with that era of films/cult classics (T2, Batman 89, Rambo, ect).
Thank you for sharing your content JP, and very best wishes with your book, I am sure it will do very well! I wanted to let you know that partly based on what I have learned from your channel, I recently created 2 maps - one of the Island of Lilliput and the other of the City of Mildendo (both are from Gulliver's travels) I have used these maps as props in one of my ASMR videos, if it interests you please feel free to take a look - th-cam.com/video/tbw_zovfmjM/w-d-xo.html Once again very best wishes with your book 🎉
"Story first, mechanics second" is good advice for making thematic monsters. Also, DragonTown rules!

You can sneak up on goatlins, but if you fail the roll you get an automatic kick in the nuts.
this is some great guidance, JP! reminds me of my second favourite monster manual - DUNGEONS AND DRAWINGS

JP, your stat blocks, and 1) thinking about story theme and then 2) the characters’ levels and then 3) choosing stat numbers is brilliant! 🌟
Definitely going to use!

Wow, looks awesome! The chart from Evan, (Nimble) is great, I backed Nimble and is amazing. I am hyped for your book! Love the art style!
Demonic fart clouds and two-headed lava trolls will be PERFECT for the game I run for my nephews! 😁
I am stealing that stat block idea. Working on changing some of my tunnel goons hack adventures to be system neutral. Such a. Elegant solution
“Super-simple System-neutral Statblock” It’s a thing! JP just coined the SSSNSB, or the S3NSB (3SNSB?) if you’re hip and in the know.

Sludge Behemoth my beloved 🤤
The book is FULL of awesome enemies!
Great video JP !
These monsters are mad nice.

We'll see when everyone gets their hands on the adventure next month!
Amazing!
Fun video!
Excellent!! 👍
Dude. I'm already sold. When are you shipping?
Thanks! Around June!
