  • When it comes to improving your style, most advice requires you to buy something new or spend money on clothing alterations. You could call this additive advice. Buy those. Wear this. Spend more money of that.
    Even if it's great advice, sometimes you just don't have the time or money to implement it. But what if there were ways to improve your style by avoiding certain mistakes (i.e. subtracting certain garments or behaviors)? Rather than buying a new piece of clothing, what if you simply avoided certain combinations?
    Well, I have good news for you. There are ways to improve your style with minimal investment, and they're very easy to follow right now. Here are 10 style mistakes that every man should try to avoid.

      CB :Look at your #3... Did you mean “wearing casual SHOES” with dress pants? Lol, it’s OK... I think most people understood what you meant!♥️ When I went to my Senior Prom in the late 90’s, my very handsome and usually well dressed date was wearing black and white Vans or something similar with his TUX!!! I lived in a wayyyy South Texas beach town and he was a surfer... but when he showed up in those shoes I was SO EMBARRASSED! I was REALLY dressed up in a long tight black gown with a slit up my right leg. I also has a lot of beautiful jewelry on. He was a great guy that “all the other girls” were infatuated with but I only liked him as a guy friend, nothing more. I guess he was actually infatuated with me... I really didn’t know until he kept trying to hold my hand and kiss me, etc... I had just broken up with a guy who was 4 years older than me who was an impeccable dresser. The guy I went to prom with was a Junior... I should have known but hindsight is 20/20 right!?!? To this day my 17 year old daughter will look at that picture and ask, “what in the heck was that guy thinking????”. She used to think that back in the 90’s, it was popular for guys to wear Vans, Converse, etc. with suits and tuxedos, Lol!! Now she knows how embarrassed I was😂 I just went and had a lot of fun that night with him and my friends with their dates! He was a really cool and funny guy, I have no regrets! Now if I would go to an opera or ballet, etc. and my date wore anything but a really nice pair of (black) dress shoes (with black dress socks), I would definitely ask him to change before we went!

    Whatever you wear, please just make sure it's clean and pressed. And shower. The world thanks you.

    • @sweeperboy
      @sweeperboy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ed Jones The showering daily thing HOPEFULLY should be common sense, but excellent point about clothes should be pressed. Years ago I had a colleague who must have bought his shirts thinking they were non-iron and stuck valiantly to this principle despite evidence to the contrary. He always looked like he had just been dragged backwards through a hedge and he was in a professional job; I never saw him with an ironed shirt and even if I assume he showered regularly (perhaps a dangerous assumption?!), he never looked clean as a result of being too lazy to iron.

    Being from London, where many many men work in the mind numbing, soul destroying financial sector, men in suits with huge backpacks on is definitely a pet peeve of mine!

    • @sweeperboy
      @sweeperboy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think those men have given up or have been beaten into submission lol. There are some pretty good messenger bags out there now, there's usually no good reason for a backpack (plus I think huge backpacks are hard to handle on the Tube).

    • @CurtissWu
      @CurtissWu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      "Given up" is the perfect way to describe it for most of these men unfortunately lol. Many also wear proper running trainers/sneakers (with suits) when they travel to and from work, only changing into smart shoes whilst working. Now i understand the practical and comfort reasons for this, but COME ON MEN!

    • @suhkawnit
      @suhkawnit 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree a backpack and suit not a good look but I think it depends if the person is dressed to nines or has on a clearly dressed down sport coat or suit coat with jeans. That said, in their defense, if you carry your lunch it's hard to carry in a messenger, although I did it but had a large timbuk 2 commuter bag that size wise looked like very nice duffel.

    for me fit is most important. if you're gonna break any of the rules, fit will most often save the look. I sometimes break one rule with my outfit to pop it with a dash of quirkiness. fashion should be fun.

    Brock, you nailed it with these tips, I have seen men wearing these style mistakes for years and have even seen some of the TH-cam men’s style guys stating that it is OK to wear these mistakes because that is their individual style. Keep these coming as your advice is not just for the vertically challenged. Would like to see more on clothing/styles for the heavier man. Thanks again. Louis USN(Ret).

  • @RevJamesCostello
    @RevJamesCostello 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Being conscious of the rules makes a big difference. When you know you are being a bit daring and breaking a rule, it can be okay. It’s when you are NOT aware that you are making a faux pas, that’s when it gets embarrassing.

  • @kingstonlim9583
    @kingstonlim9583 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    To add onto the wearing a backpack with a suit mistake, I've found that it also adds unnecessary wear and tear to the shoulder pads of you suit.
    And let's be honest, do you really want to destroy an expensive suit jacket with a cheap nylon bag?

    I can agree on most of the tips, except the one where you said that really crazy socks are overkill. I personally have been wearing Happy Socks for 2 years now, because I like vibrant, funny colours and socks are a subtle way of making my outfit unique. Also, funny socks just make me feel good about myself and also, they have become my signature thing on my uni campus. The entire campus knows me as the guy with the funny socks, and I have gotten more compliments on my socks than anything else related to my appearance. Especially from the ladies, which can never be a bad thing.

    Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate your efforts here. Many men got exactly no fashion advice from our fathers. I like to break the dark socks rule with light coloured pants. First off, never wear white socks, no matter how formal they are. I don't wear black socks either unless my pants are black. Having said that I do wear navy socks or blue socks with light khakis but only if I am wearing a similar colour palette for my torso, for instance, a navy shirt or a blue shirt.
    The rule of thumb I pick is this if you have two contrasting colours in your outfit already then don't introduce a third colour palette unless it's matched with your accessories. On the flip side, if your trousers and shirt are complimentary/ neutral/ similar colour palette, then totally introduce contrast in socks and accessories.
    Two colours are usually safe for an outfit. If you wear a third colour, do it with your accessories. What do you say, Brock?

    The funky bright sock thing with a dark formal suit can be pulled off by some particularly older men sometimes here in the UK. The late, great, Sir David Frost was a prime example of this, as he always wore red socks. It just helps to liven up what can be a rather bland look with a bit of character and is a little unexpected jolt.
    But I would say, if you do this, go with a solid no-pattern bright colour ideally, and for the love of God nothing *actually* neon lol.

    I agree with everything, but one: there are dive watches and dressy dive watches. James bond wore submariner for years in suits and it worked. But yes, some dive watches ate not dress up friendly.
    For me i have big wrists so 40mm dress watches look silly on me, whereas 44-46mm watches are proportionate. Good video!

    I think a well fitted, dark V-neck can be worn without anything under it. Particularly if you are in good shape and have a little muscle tone. The one caveat to that would be if you’ve got a tuft of chest hair hurting out the V. Whatever you wear, wear it well and with confidence.

    I agree with most of these but differ on some of the sock rules. I think athletic socks outside of the gym are ok if you're wearing athletic-inspired casual clothing and I kind of like longer socks with shorts (I know that's a personal preference thing). I definitely don't like loud, crazy socks but I like a subtle pattern. Also, I like the contrast of dark socks with light colored pants - though white socks with dark pants are always a no. Oh, and thanks for mentioning not wearing dress shoes with certain types of jeans - I see a LOT of people doing that that think they're "dressing" up.

      I agree Mark. I also don't wear undershirts under my sweaters, unless it's freezing and it's a crew neck. IMO an undershirt should never be visible. I equate the visible undershirt under a sweater the way I view a visible undershirt under a dress shirt (unacceptable). Also the shirt at the 7:53 mark shows just as much chest as a V-neck sweater would.
      Cheers.
      Edit: @ the 4:35 you're wearing a semi-spread or spread collar without a tie, I think this should be included in a list of things not to do. (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, as I don't have any context in regards to the picture. Maybe you were shooting a video on how to tie a necktie.)
      At 4:45, I think a half windsor is a better knot than a four in hand knot for a semi spread collar, it's more symmetrical, nice dimple though.
      In regards to watches, anything with a stainless steel band/bracelet is a sports/tool watch, regardless of cost. (Yes, I know your AP Royal Oak is expensive)
      Dress watches have slim cases and usually don't exceed 40mm, and a leather band. (The Cartier Tank doesn't have the most sophisticated movement, but the style and dimensions are spot on.)

    I think a parka can work with a suit provided that it's the right type of parka. If it's a conservative color (think navy, black, or charcoal, maybe a medium gray) rather than a bright or a flashy color or a mix of colors, doesn't have too many add-ons (zippers, bulky pockets, patches, etc.), and is long enough (longer than the length of a suit jacket) then it could work.
    Of course, I agree that this should only be worn on either the coldest of days or on days with winter weather (think snow, sleet, freezing rain, etc.) when wearing a wool overcoat wouldn't be the best option.

    I think the funniest spectacle I ever saw a few years back was a guy in a 3 pc suit on a pushbike, wearing a backpack and cycle helmet, Red Nike Airmax with socks with sock suspenders, to top it off. Snowboarding type wrap around sunglasses (I think the Oakley Jawbreaker style). Dear God what a sight.

    And I agree with everything on it, but every rules there is an excemption...like the backpack and the winter jacket. Specially for men working abroad, I think the winter jacket is a necessity specially if you are in a very cold country and a backpack if you are in a "shady" country.

    Any recommendations for good thin belts to consider, the last two belts I have purchased have been a little wider than I would prefer but just couldn't find what I was looking for at a reasonable price. Other question would be, any recommendations for dress shirts with smaller point collars, I like the J Crew Ludlow shirts I have but they certainly don't measure up well to my Brooks Brothers shirts in terms of construction but the fit and collar size is way better.

  • @pgplaysvidya
    @pgplaysvidya 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    As for rules I might break, closest would be wearing my columbia jacket with work formal clothing. I do it because I don't own a messenger bag and when I need to carry a backpack around, I'm not wearing a backpack with my peacoat.
    Solution: going to buy a messenger bag
    Another issue I'm struggling with is what to wear, boots wise, with jeans. What if there's 12 inches of snow and I can't survive in jeans and running shoes? The black / grey boots I own are the most functional, but they clash with the blue. I'm sure nobody actually notices but now I can't stop but think of it.

    Interesting because a lot of this is reminiscent of eighties "dress for success." Indicates that basis classic style rules don't change. Actually I notice that quite a bit with your channel. A lot of fashion rules for men date back to the 1920s with updates for each era.

    • @sweeperboy
      @sweeperboy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An excellent point. Many of the fashion trends date terribly, and even when they are en vogue, they perhaps only look right for a certain age or shape of guy. Timeless style is...timeless.

    • @JRSnyderJrAZ
      @JRSnyderJrAZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sweeperboy Well said. Trends are trends. It's very important also to realize when you reach a certain age not to follow trends. What is timeless that works for you works best and at times that may run counter to current vogue. This could also mean for example the cut of jeans. Skinny is a no go after a certain point and it is difficult to see men in their forties and beyond in them.

    • @sweeperboy
      @sweeperboy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JR Snyder Jr Some of the super-skinny jeans only look good on teenagers and perhaps early-twenties guys, assuming they are also skinny, and that also is debatable, lol 😂

    • @JRSnyderJrAZ
      @JRSnyderJrAZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sweeperboy It's going to be funny watching people freak out over skinny jeans and chelsea boots giving way to the next trend. Boot cut jeans and cowboy boots already on runways and red carpets.

    • @ggivensjr
      @ggivensjr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dislike skinny jeans and boot cuts (unless you wear cowboy boots which is why they're made). However, I do like slim cuts because I have a bit of a gut and sometimes regular fit or classic fit are way too baggy. But, full disclosure out of curiosity I purchased a pair of skinny chinos from H&M which I think are really slim. I liked the fit so bought a 2nd pair in another color.

  • @necunoscut81

    at 5:15, when you have your shirt sleeves rolled up, what I usually do is roll it once more to half its width, if that makes sense. I think that's similar to when you pick slimmer belts, both for jeans and watches to sort of match your appearance (as a short guy). What's your opinion on that?

    • @BrockMcGoff
      @BrockMcGoff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @AB-th3vp

    I personally think that v neck without nothing underneath and bagpack are things that you should avoid if they're exagerate
    If you avoid those two no matter what, you might turn your style in a too boring and stereotypically adult/formal style
