      I heard that José was considered for the role of Don Birnam in The Lost Weekend. That's a "what could have been" that drives me crazy. Ray Milland did a terrific job but there's no question that José would have killed it.

      @carlosbarbosa9062 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      peace2014 certainly youre not from USA and never had to fill an application, in USA ethniciy is a thing. And in the particular case of Joe Ferrer he was born in Puerto Rico, his parents were Puerto Ricans, his grand father was a supporter of Puerto Rican pro independence movement and his aunt Monsita Ferrer was a very well known pianist and "Danza Puertorriquena" composer, his background is very root in another culture. So i make this point because there is a great debate if Puerto Ricans are actually americans, specially in conservatives circles, in the most liberal snow flakes because would be imperialist they to be considered americans and the most conservatives because we have to get rid of every latino to make america great again. So even Jose Ferrer with all the idiosincratic style and beatiful enunciation and articulation of the english language would not qualify to be a real american. So far we have to describe ourselves as hispanic americans. Its not our fault, it is just been honest about how this things work and are understood in America.

    • @danielstanwyck2812
      @danielstanwyck2812 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "A real American". Yeah, right. The Indians who who were born here wee the original ones. Danes, Germans, Russians, French, Hungarian, Puerto Rican, e al. As American as the guy next door

    • @doctorpretorious9911
      @doctorpretorious9911 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      daniel stanwyck I meant he was talking about from the perspective of a specific culture and America nowdays is like that, I hope this evolve someday. But an american citizen is not just enough to be called just an american in America, identitary ideologies are institutionalized and you have to consider yourself something else like White, Latino, Native, Asian etc "what's your ethnic background?" It's the favorite question in America.

    • @doctorpretorious9911
      @doctorpretorious9911 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Daniel Natal Puerto Ricans are natural born Americans citizen, you don't listen people saying Puerto Rican-american as they say Mexican-americans for example. He was profoundly american as many Puerto Ricans that take this in great regard. But Americans in the mainland doesn't consider Puerto Ricans Americans, in fact many of them want to get rid of Puerto Rico, they don't like latino culture or people of a latino culture that maybe us what you mean with cultural Marxism and Jose Ferrer fights this. When Jose Ferrer donates his Oscar to the University of Puerto Rico he said, "They don't want me to say I'm Puerto Rican, they want me to say I have a European background" and this was very usual for Hispanics in the yesteryear Hollywood era when they even invented fake biographies to white out the ethnic background of their stars. Not just Hispanics but African Americans like the model and actress Aquanetta. I have listened to Jose Ferrer speaking in spanish, and he spoke Spanish with the same articulation and urbane manner he spoke english for I can say he was the product of two cultures, this shouldn't be a controversy now and it was not a controversy back in those years when Jose Ferrer embraced it. In fact this idea is very american, people with this point of view use to be Americans, in other countries they think about ethnic background differently.
