Paul Norman... TWO WORDS! *forbidden forest* That tune scared the crap out of me when I was a teenager! Is this track actually present in the arcade version? I know Jeroen often took only loose elements from the original coin-op versions, but I've never heard this anywhere but on the c64.
@Greg Daniel : Nope, this one is a 100% original (The title music), I "had to" or "was requested" to convert the level tunes 1:1 from the original Arcade, though. This title tune is 100% original. =)

It’s one of my favourite ever SID tunes. I have it on my channel, sans visualiser. I also once had some confidently incorrect idiot try and argue with me that it wasn’t really a C64 tune and/or wasn’t really part of the game. 🥴
Yes, it's probable. I've never seen different versions of audio chips that sound the same. For example, the various versions of the Game Boy (classic, pocket, light, color) have totally different waveforms.
It was a "glitch" in the volume register in the original SID (6581), which was actually not a glitch, but a true representation of the volume change that instantly occurred within the SID chip (which was as instant as 1/4.000.000th of a second)... The volume register set the volume of all 3 SID channels from volume 0 (silence) to volume 15 (max volume)... and when playing 4 bit samples on that volume register ($D418) the average volume went down to volume 8 (of the normal 15), but, *VOILA!*, you could play samples on a virtual 4th channel. Somehow... Commodore (who were not aware this "glitch" was being used to play samples within the soundtracks for the games made on the Commodore 64 by the likes of myself), "fixed the glitch" within the second version of the SID-chip (8580) and made the volume "ramp" smoothly to the changing volume (if it was set purposefully by the composer)... big mistake in a way, because since then, when you composed music for a Commodore 64 game, the use of samples was not appreciated, because of compatibility. A bit of a shame, but, still, the new sid (8580) is now in use as a great Synth for many modern productions, since it has a lot of advantages, filter-wise and other-wise over the old 6581... And now it's SID gold. =)

it's a "glitch" where if you change the volume register which handles all of the channels, it creates an audible click and that's what is happening, and due to the register being 4-bits, you can make 4-bit PCM audio with it
@@macstevins But why are the samples on a 4th channel here, and in some other oscilloscope view videos clearly including samples, there are always only 3 channels displayed?
@@NuntiusLegis the SID only does 3 channels/voices, so some emulators only show the 3, but there are some that do support displaying all 3 plus the virtual channel because the 4th is the master volume
@@macstevins But in the 3-channel-displays, instead of being absent, the waveforms of the samples seem to show up in one of the 3 voices. And when the 4th is the master volume, how can this not affect the other 3 channels?
@@NuntiusLegis the thing is that, they are emulators/displays of waveform generated, theyre going to be different interpretations of how they want to display the voices, there will be some that does the master volume bug to be displayed no matter what to the voices

The 4-bit PCM bass gives the song a raspy sound.
Yeah, that's the "downside" of using global volume to make samples, it makes the 3 Sid channels sound distorted.
I like it tho
@@santiagovalentine8294 The imperfections make this song perfect.
One of the main problems is that the global volume is, on average, at half full volume, which end up making it harder to hear the channels.
The theme of the washed up pro racer who now works at the car scrap yard, but still enjoys his life a ton and is genuinely a great person
Simply awesome stuff from the master. 30 years on and it still rocks!
Thanks, John !
The original Hot Rod music was ok, but this just sounds excellent!
Vrooom, vrooooom!
Another great tune from one of the SID masters. The MON era really was a changing of the guard moment for the C64. 😊
Not ruining the 64 likes.
I was like 64, so yeah, really awesome tune. I can rest in peace knowing that at least one of Paul Norman's games finally got an oscilloscope view.

Greg Daniel I believe it’s based on the theme from the arcade version, but I don’t think it’s an exact cover.
Never mind, although Jeroen Tel covered a few tracks from the arcade version, this particular tune isn't a cover.

Is that extra sample channel present in the original 6581 or it's a newer version of the chip?
Samples can only be played back properly on the 6581 chip
Ok, but is that 4th channel present in every chip or it's a different version of it? Because I've seen different versions of the 6581 (not the 8580).
