  • This is a video of the features and functions of my 1968 Toronado by Oldsmobile.
I have owned this car for 16 years. It is rarely driven and only on perfect days. I am considering putting this car up for sale.

I'm always surprised that these cars are never seen in the Barrett-Jackson and Mecum car auctions. These cars, the early Rivieras and the 67 El Dorado were works of art.

In 1966 when I was twelve the sister of our next door neighbor won the Miss West Virginia beauty contest. As part of her awards each month she got a different, new Toronado to drive. She would often come to visit our neighbor and that gorgeous car got a lot of attention and so did Judy. Not sure if I had a bigger crush on her or the car ! LOL

We had one when I was growing up. Awesome car, made to cruise the interstate in style! It was a Personal Luxury Coupe, years before the Germans or Japanese (think BMW 5 series decades before). My Dad still has it in the garage "awaiting restoration". And it has 'provenance': The CEO of P&H (the "H" of the company that made the huge construction and mining equipment) would buy a fully-loaded black Tornado every three years. Dad bought his trade-ins twice. We had his 68 and 71.
The 68 was powerful, sporty...and huge. Not much of a handler, was best for high-speed cruising on open highways...like a trip we made out west, when Montana interstates had no speed limit 😃

In 1979 I bought a 1968 Tornado. I loved it. It was great in the snow and rode down the highway like a dream. I kept knocking out the CV joints. They were expensive, so I just got rid of it.

I remember going to the dealership with mom & dad to buy a brand new 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado (light brown w/white vinyl roof) off the showroom floor. It was one of my favorite cars that the family ever owned! Mom had originally wanted a Caddy, but when she saw the sporty styling of the Toronado (and dad saw the performance of the Olds Rocket 455 engine) they had to have it. There was no other car at the time that was anything like the Toronado.
Many people watching this video may not notice, but the speedo rotates like a canister instead of having the typical wiper-shaped gauge. Just one of the many cool features of this futuristic car. I really miss it!

Beautiful cars, a lot of people didn't know what to think of the front wheel drive at the time, I believe it hurt the sales, also 7 miles to the gallon didn't help, even at that time when petroleum was about 40 cents a gallon but hey I was a kid and I thought it was a fantastic automobile I've always been a fan of large auto's!🤠👍

Nice car! I don't remember ever seeing one of those way back when. The bad thing about classic cars is they're too nice to drive most of the time.

You gotta love these old cars. Push button everything, tilt and telescope steering column, auto and power accessories, and not one gauge, except for fuel.

I was surprised to see the mechanical analog seek function on the radio. My 77 Chryler Newport had it, it was the only one I had ever seen before this video. It also had a second "Hi-Beam" switch on the floor, which activated teh seek function. I never dreamed it was available in '68.

Yeah, I do miss the Toronado a little, but I hope the new owner has more free time to enjoy it than I did. The new owner seems to be a serious Olds enthusiast, so I was happy that it ended up in good hands.

Don’t forget-a Luxury Hot-rod!…first year to offer a4-5-4 ! He may be to modest to show that off, AN D to smart to jeopardize it in a drag race but to those leadfoots who don’t know better it’s a luxury SLEEPER car!

The car was not a W34, however, I very luckily acquired the rare dual cut-out bumper.
You are correct, the steering wheel is from a 66 Toronado. The original tilt-tele steering wheel was the rim-blow type and was cracked. The rim-blow feature would no longer function. In order to pass the police inspection for the antique vehicle tags, I installed the 66 steering wheel so the horn would function properly. I have not seen any 68 Toronados with a rim-blow that still works.

Would you say how much you got for it? I have a '69 that I don't want to part with, but if it's worth some decent cash, I might consider selling. It's in "good" condition and completely original with about 106,000 miles. Been in the family since my father bought as a family car in 1972.

MY friends dad bought a 1966 Olds 98 LS brand new off the showroom floor and it had the wonder bar radio and this same steering wheel with the telescopic. We thought that car was the balls-it was. I was going to ask if you sold it but I see from other comments you did. Miss it yet?

On my grandfathers now restored (to clarify, it was restored between 2002 and 2004) 1968 Oldsmobile toronado, it did come as an option, but the original owner (my grandfather's friend being the 2nd owner, he bought it off the original owner and him and his young (about 15 or so at the time) friend rebuilt/restored it in the aforementioned time date) opted not to get it.

+Alixy R T Yes, it really IS a front-wheel driver. The Cadillac El Dorados used the same transmission. Look up the TH-425 on Wikipedia for more info and pics. Hagerty also does a complete walk around in a "how to buy" video.
