Hey bud. Pickle fork is your go to tool on old ball joints and tie rod ends as mentioned. Honestly, IMO, that small crack is no threat to your safety where it's at so I suggest consult your favorite welding shop to discuss it and see if he can go to your shop and weld it up there under the car. Obviously, the area needs to be cleaned well and the crack vee'd to get good penetration. Paint it up and reassemble. That frame has lasted over 65 years so far and looks to be solid so keep it, weld it, and put er together. JMO

I agree. I am so used to not using a pickle fork because it ruins boots. I honestly forget I have one. As for the frame I think I am going to have it welded up.

Travis... Piece of mind... My opinion frame off welding the crack and see when you have the frame off if there's anymore cracks? Then you can do a nice prep and paint on the entire frame.. and keep all your airbags suspension parts you have...

Okay, my take and you already pretty much stated in all your replies was that you are gonna pull the frame and repair it. Exactly what I’d do, then strip and paint it. While ya got body off fix or repair any issues with the underbody. Personally, I’d paint underneath as well but that’s my OCD 😉

Since originality is not a concern, get the new frame. That 65 year old frame is tired , it's done it's job of being the backbone of the car. If you're planning to take it to car shows and rarely drive it then then yeah weld it. I gather you are planning to drive it and enjoy trouble free use with the turn of the key. I have used a complete Art Morrison chassis, they are perfectionist. When it's all done you will be happy and so will the 55. You will discover finding that crack right away was in reality a blessing. Good luck.

God, that's alot of options. The full frame would be nice. I have friends. A father, son dual. Built a Monte SS and a El Camino road racers using the Schwartz full frame. They swear by them. But like the sub frame idea. But like you say. It would be nice to keep the original frame and reinforce it. Man, that a lot. Me, I'm in to handling. So it would be the full frame. Plus you get the updated diff. Disc brakes, dual cylinder master. It would ride like a brand new car. But with the looks of a classic. I would think about your long term plans with this. And decide then which way will best get you there.

Is there any reason you couldn't just pull the front sheet metal and have the crack welded? I'd have the frame repaired, but I don't see why the whole body would need to come off. It seems like a huge amount of work that would delay the project and open countless rabbit holes with 'while you're in there repairs'. I know you are very particular with your cars, and whatever you decide to do will be awesome. I just don't see any reason to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

    • @TWAMotorsports

If were in your position repair the crack and keep going no sense in spending the kind of money your talking about when the crack is pretty much hair line. if it had split worse then it would make sense to front clip it of full aftermarket frame swap but IMO thats a ton of time labor and nickle and diming for such a small bump in the road.
