    HIYA my friends, I'm here, alive and kickin!! I recorded this a bit back but hadn't had a chance to edit it until this week! I'm VERY curious to know what y'all think because even after this video I'm still not 100% sold on either side. Feels like choosing between two terrible options 😞
    P.S. I also think the etymology behind the genophage is awesome, geno being the latin root for giving birth or producing and phage being a virus that selectively infects and replicates. As I'm sure many of you know, in biology -phage is a suffix attached to things that destroy cells. I just thought it was really neat that the name is so intentional, plus I just think etmology is so cool :)

      We are currently overpopulating our planet. What if some aliens come around and "adjust" our birth rate? It will definitely be the biggest war crime known to humankind. This is absolute racism. You can't procreate because of your species not because you did something wrong you are just born wrong.

      The CEOs of BioWare used to be MDs and the company wass originally created to make medical software. Makes sense they'd know their biological word roots.

    • @Squadwin
      @Squadwin ปีที่แล้ว

      Bioware was created by a group of doctors. Medical wordplay can be seen in many places (also in the company's name). I am pretty sure that the root of geno is γένος a proto hellenic word for what you said.

    In regards to the genophage. I believe the Krogan said one hatch batch is 1,000 or 10,000 babies. So the Salarians were scared that Krogan population would overwhelm the galaxy and the krogan could be warlords. The salarians looked at this as 'saving the galaxy'

    • @purpleisthesneakiest
      @purpleisthesneakiest 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Krogan broods are rated at 1000 offspring per female. The concern was less that the Krogan could become warlords, and more that their rapid birthrate necessitates Krogan expansion. This was the entire impetus for the Krogan Rebellions - the Krogan began aggressively colonizing land already settled by Asari and Salarians and then reacted violently when the Asari and Salarians demanded expulsion. This behavior was entirely predictable - they were a relatively primitive society given spaceships and space suits. They were still brutal and violent, they still made war on themselves - they even failed the nuclear question. They weren't ready for space, but they were dragged into it anyways to fight someone else's war. As such, I place the blame on all of this on the heads of the Salarians (though I can understand their actions, as the Krogan were a last resort to end the centuries of war with the Rachni).
      The only way that Krogans can coexist with other sapient species in the long term is if strict population control is enforced. Ideally, this is a population control that Krogan society imposes upon itself, which is something only a united and strongly centralized people can accomplish. The Krogan during the Rebellions fit the bill, but were unwilling to negotiate. The Genophage was not intended by the Salarians to be deployed (likely used as a deterrent to force them to the negotiating table), but the Turians overruled them and used it as a weapon - directly causing the total and complete collapse of Krogan culture and society. While the Genophage is endurable, the psychological damage of its effects have sent the Krogan into a doom spiral of suicide-by-battlefield and infighting.
      The modern Salarian STG updated the Genophage specifically because the Krogans are currently neither unified nor stable. They are in no shape to be able to handle a sudden population explosion, and this plus a thousand years of racial tensions and grievances would result in a second, much more pathetic Krogan Rebellions and a subsequent Krogan extinction event.

    I am always so stoked when one of your Mass Effect playthrough vids lands! It's fun to watch someone experience these games for the first time and seeing you respond to the games' choices and situations reminds me of how I felt years ago when I played them for the first time. Mass Effect 2, in particular, has so many moral dilemmas and other tough choices. It's why I played ME2 a few times, to hone in on my playthroughs (and vary my romances). Can't wait for your next ME2 vid!

    Of all the loyalty missions, Mordin’s is my favorite-the setting and ambience, Mordin’s speeches, the unclear morality of the choices- think it’s brilliant, standout writing and acting.
    As for the research, generally I keep it, even though the research methods were barbaric, so the sacrifices of the female Krogan volunteers weren’t in vain. But I can’t help wondering if that is really the best choice, because if a cure is developed, won’t the krogan try to overrun the galaxy, and Shepard will be indirectly responsible for millions or billions of lives lost?
    Choices like this make Mass Effect the best game ever😊

    Hey Ren! Happy to see your return!
    I was thrilled when this popped into my feed - not just because you're back, but because it's this mission specifically. Many videos ago, when you mentioned your professional background in epidemiology and public health, I immediately thought ahead to this chapter, and I said to myself, man, this is going to be *so* exactly up her alley. All the do-no-harm ambiguity and tangled scientific morality, and then that final decision, a textbook dilemma in medical ethics... I have been waiting for you to get here, and your reactions and thoughtful choices did not disappoint.
    Hope you're doing well. Greatly looking forward to future adventures.

    Getting a new ME2 vid while recovering from surgery let's gooooo 🙌🏻
    This is easily one of the most morally and ethically thought-provoking stories/missions that ME2 has to offer, I think. Like Mordin says, there really are too many variables when it comes to deciding where you might stand. As for me, I'm definitely with you that there are a lot of gray areas with this. Mordin is right in wanting to stop these experiments because people are actively being harmed, but he's also fighting against curing a sterility plague that I personally feel should never have been used. Maelon wants to cure the genophage and help the Krogan, but test subjects who end up in his lab (sometimes under false pretenses, as shown by the Urdnot scout) are ending up dead. It's truly a complex situation, and I think you did a really good job of driving that home just by taking the time to talk through your thoughts on everything.
    Thanks again for a fun and fascinating episode!

  • @Michael-xp7gw
    @Michael-xp7gw ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Mordin's stories are always impactful. The ethical discussions with him are great.
    Though we have not yet seen it, you've probably done Grunt's mission and moved on by now. There is something you can do on that world still that I am fairly sure you will like. I hope you figured it out. Maybe we will see it in the next episode. 😊
    It's a small thing, but it's one of the many little things in these games that contribute to their charm.

    A tip: apply ammo types (incendiary, cryo, etc) to yourself and your squadmates (if they have them) at the start of every mission. They stay equipped the entire mission and always do more damage. They are never not helpful.

    @Ren when you can focus on using the different types of ammo: Disruptor, Cryo, Inferno, etc. Disruptor will stun enemies and is good against geth. Cryo freezes and slows down the enemy, and inferno will burn them. It'll be more fun hitting enemies with these almost. I think there's a way the entire party gets affected with the ammo so everyone can freeze or stun.

Not to slight the Krogan in any way, but Old Blood is one of the best quests in the game, if not THE best quest in the game. I appreciated hearing your view on the genophage this episode, morally as well as scientifically speaking. It's easy to say one side was right and the other wrong - the game clearly leans towards accusing/judging Mordin which I think is somewhat shortsighted. In this case Shepard is both an outsider (with a lack of experience and knowledge on the matter, not having witnessed the circumstances that led to genophage first-hand) and bit of a naïve human who believes to know what is right (for other species and the galaxy). I do enjoy how in-depth the game allows Mordin to go on his motivations. He such a great and complex character. Honestly, not sure what I would do if it were up to me (in real life) to decide how to end the "Krogan problem" for the sake of the galaxy. I don't think I could carry the responsibility of having made a species sterile for the greater good.
    Also fun fact to lighten the mood a bit: if you take Tali as a compagnion on Mordin's loyalty mission and Shephard's says to the captured, depressed krogan "I said a badass, not some quarian with a tummy-ache", Tali will jump in and say "Hey! I'm standing right here you know". Pretty hilarious (^-^)
    P.S. we all love our boy Wrex and our baby Grunt! To me they're basically like a grumpy grandpa-grandson duo haha

    • @panner11
      @panner11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the game leans towards judging Mordin. Shepard just plays devils advocate in order to get this great dialogue from Mordin. In general, I think the game actually tries very hard to show boths sides of the story. It's the discourse around it and audience interpretation that is so one-sided. But that makes sense. Since it's a game and won't have real consequences, it's much easier to argue the idealistic and righteous route rather than the pragmatic route.

    • @JustJDx
      @JustJDx ปีที่แล้ว

      @@panner11 I mean the player plays devil's advocate to get the dialogue, not Shepard necessarily. The fact that the game makes her give accusatory, judgemental responses just so that a character (Mordin) provides us with more contextual information on the topic to me shows the game prefers us to question his beliefs and actions. "You're a heartless killer!", "this bothers you?", "you were dealing with a guilty conscience. The doctor who killed millions", and "That's garbage". There were barely any proper counterarguments available or objective responses to side or at least show we understand Mordin's own valid reasoning. In all honesty I get Shepard's paragon standpoint in this matter, as well as how Mordin had to rationalize it for himself (given the urgency of the circumstances).

    • @panner11
      @panner11 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustJDx Since it's the game we are talking about, the very fact that they wrote Mordin to be so compelling shows the game isn't one sided. I suppose you're only talking about Shepard's responses so fair enough. But to me that's just Shepard leaning one way as devil's advocate which isn't the same as the game doing so. Just my interpretation

    • @JakeFishMaui
      @JakeFishMaui ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The salarians developed it as a weapon but did not want to deploy it. In the codex entry "Krogan: Genophage" it says: "The salarians believed the genophage would be used as a deterrent, a position the turians viewed as naive. Once the project was complete, the turians mass produced and deployed it. The krogan homeworld, their colonies, and all occupied worlds were infected."

    Everyone debates the use of the Genophange but no one ever ask when will it end? How long must the Krogan pay for the mistakes of their ancestors? Suppose humanity had a type or form a genophage at the end of WW2? Would some argue to prevent another rise of a Nazi regime be a justification? I would not like to have made that decisionbut I could understand the fear and that's at the core of this, fear. What would they do if we don't do this? I am not sure there is a right answer on this. Perhaps it's the self-examination we as players go through in trying to wrap our minds around all the complexities of this kind of decision that's really important.

  • @manofwarb
    @manofwarb ปีที่แล้ว

    What clinched it for me was Mordin's mention of a War Economy. A War Economy is state (national) policy in which all resources belonging to the polity - food, medicine, transportation, infrastructure, even education and population growth are all just resources used in warfighting. If the genophage is cured, the population surge will be used for one purpose only - as troopss in a fresh new offensive against a clan's enemies. This forces the other clans to do the same for sheer survival. All we'd get is a prolonged civil war. And should one clan eventually win that war, invading other planets is the only thing they'll use the population surge now for. The genophage is the only thing that deters the krogan from attempting yet another round of invasions.
    I always delete the data precisely because it is only results of brute force experiments. Brute force trial and error experiments are bad science because they don't establish proper causality. And their results are scientifically useless because you cannot establish proper cause and effect, you cannot verify the correctness of results, you cannot replicate the experiment(s) to validate their results and you cannot improve upon them in any way.
