  • Wash up with this video. Take a look to find out the chemical reaction of saponification and how the soap works. Just to balance it out there is also a look at biodiesel, a good use of old cooking oil.

    Hi, I am a bit confused about the soap part. You circled the O- group as hydrophillic but everywhere i've looked it says that the COO- group is hydrophillic and the rest of the hydrocarbon chain is hydrophobic

    Shouldnt the Oxygen in the ester be part of the carboxylic acid? I see u made it a part of the triglyceride in the drawing

      Agreed - glad it’s not just me that sees the glycerol looses the OH not just the H. Also the ester can’t lose the O the ion can’t exist in that form.
      To be fair this error is all over the internet even in the CGP A level revision book. Have to search far and wide to find it correct. I trust Chemguide.
