    Hi Cherie, Thanks! Being there, you too realize all the prep work involved in making a video, not to mention the research, filming, editing and uploading. I couldn't do it alone and am eternally grateful to my producers, Dana and Lisa. The rewards are reaching so many people and sharing this craft that I adore. It's tough but, I love it. Someday, I might even earn a nickel! Take care and thanks. Nancy

    Thanks Patsy. I read a lot and, since starting these videos, have learned so much more. People like you and my other viewers help me to learn. It's been a pretty amazing experience. The laughing is a given - I've no choice. Crying and giving up are not options for me. It's all pretty funny, after all. Thanks again and happy making! Nancy

    place a small amount of amonnia in the liver of sulfur solution while using the coloring process and you will pick up purple, blue, green and color variables in that spectrum added to the normal colors. quite stunning

    HI again Apache, The fish in the bottom of the crock pot is made from silver metal clay. He was there, heating up for the demo but, he never got used. Now he lives in my metal clay parts box awaiting the day where he can swim in the crock pot again. Thanks for writing and watching. Take care. Nancy

    Hi Nancy! Terrific work lovie! I remember using liver of sulphur taking I out of bath or painting/puddling it on certain areas of my copper or silver then sprinkling 4/0 steel wool bits onto the puddles, leaving it on long enough to make the steel particles rust. I haven't delved any further into that technique but I imagine puddles of water would accomplish the same thing.

    You can add salt to the vinegar and suspend in a container to achieve the turquoise colored patina. I did it ages ago, but it left a crusty residue on the 'commercial' brass flower. I'll be trying it again in the near future using a good quality brass sheet this time. I created an awesome patina once on a pair of earrings I sold in my shop, but it was time consuming to get them to match! It did work out nice though, but it takes patience!

    Nancy, your fabulous. I love watching your videos. Even better are your language goofs. They make you more human so I can relate to you. I wish you did more videos. I watch each one at least 3 or 4 times and then come back to them later again and again.

    Hi Ceafva, I am definitely human and full of flaws - my word recall being a primary one. I wish I could make more videos too but, 45 videos isn't too shabby. Ideally, I'd make one a week. I just don't have the time especially when I do a companion web page for the video. Alas, all that writing is soooo time consuming as well as all the other work that goes into a video. Thank you so much for the wonderful comment and I am very grateful that you enjoy the vids. Take care Ceafva and enjoy. N

    Hi Nancy! I didn't quite catch if you said it was or wasn't a good idea to seal the patina with some type of renaissance wax or some type of lacquer? Could you tell me what you use. I'm new to hand stamping metal and still learning the ways of liver of sulfur!!! Thank you! Amy

    Never saw LoS do such beautiful things. I'd only seen it used to darken sterling, then the surfaces buffed & polished leaving the black in the low spots.
    I spent my working life as a potter. Potash feldspar is used in many, many glaze recipes. I remember asking in class where Po'-tash was mined & I thought she was going to have a conniption, she laughed so hard. Seems Pot'-ash is the more usual pronunciation. Then there was the time I asked what Art Nouveau's work looked like. :D

    How do you clean up your metal before ‘patina ing’?
    Also how do patina copper that has some kind of coating (like ‘tarnish resistant’ or permanently coloured’)?
    Thanks Nancy. I love all of your videos ❤

    I just found the comment, yeah! Not upset at all, nope! BTW, somehow I missed your other comment about the ratio of baking soda to water. What I do is throw in about a handful into about 3 cups of water. You could use less baking soda too. A good way to test if it's working is to pour a tad of the baking soda solution into a container with a tiny bit of pickle - if it bubbles, you're good to go. Take care and, as always, thank you for your wonderful comments and questions! I mean it. N

    I have 800 stamped silver new war decoration replicated from ww2 as a filler in my collection, that I want to tarnish/patina to look more condusive with my originals. So, quick little dips in liver of sulphur solution, then rinse, repeat until desired colors then neutralizd. That sound about right?

  • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
    @NancyHamiltonJewelry  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dave, I'm not alone out there! So glad I'm not. My sister has, what we call, cliche´ disease, where nothing comes out quite right but, is hilarious. I'll take a laugh wherever and whenever - thanks for yours.
    The LOS does make great colors on silver but, doesn't stay too long unless it's sealed. I generally don't use the colors and rely on stones and other coloring techniques like enamel or colored pencils or....lots of other ways. Are you a jeweler now? Welcome and thanks. Nancy

    The beautiful pieces you showed that had Jax greens.... are you then applying a sealer? Such a catch 22 if selling a piece I feel like I need to seal but then the color dulls:(

  • @Susanarylander

    Just discovered you. Great video! Two questions...
    1)do you reuse your liver of sulfur? I tend to toss mine after that one day. Should I try to reuse?
    2) how did you get that texture in the copper sheet? Do you have a rolling mill I assume?

  • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
    @NancyHamiltonJewelry  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Stormy. I think maybe you left the brass in there too long? The thing I like about commercial patinas, is that they are quick and relatively predictable. I've put metal in saw dust, soaked with ammonia and the technique that you are discussing. The "homemade" products do give some very cool results. Did you coat the patina with Renaissance wax or a sealer? Thanks for the tip and take care. Nancy

    Hello Nancy and anyone else who reads this...
    I would like to blacken wedding rings and seal in the patina permanently. I will be polishing the high points but want the deeper points to stay blackened. Any advice on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated! I love all of the advice that you have so generously shared online. Thanks ahead if you can shed any light on how to get the permanent effect :) Lorelei

    • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
      @NancyHamiltonJewelry  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Lorelei Greene Hi Lorelei. The black areas will stay black because: A. They will continue to tarnish, B. The patina is in a low spot and doesn't (usually) experience significant wear and C. any coating you put on will come off - eventually. I've been corresponding with a woman who's had a ring returned to her 4 times because the coating she put on the ring kept wearing off. I don't recommend coating jewelry unless you are talking about earrings or necklaces. Rings and Bracelets experience too much wear. You could try Renaissance Wax but, as I said, especially with a ring worn day and night, the finish will be rubbed, scratched and abraded off very soon. Hope this helps. Wish I had a miracle for you! N

    Oh yes, forgot to ask my question...when you talked about bacon soda and water solution, this isn't the first time I've heard it; however, no one ever talks about what percentage of soda to water. What formula do you use?

    That is a great question Maggie! I just started researching copper and copper salts (which are in some of the patinas) and had no idea how dangerous they were to, not only us, but all those critters out there. Read this. It'll make you very nervous:

    The best method, especially since you are on a well and a septic, is to contact your waste disposal company. There are very toxic chemicals in some patinas and you DON’T want them in your water, or anybody else’s. A hundred “good girl” points to you for even questioning what goes down the drain! Save up the patinas until you have enough to warrant a trip - don't mix them together though! Keep like with like. If I learn anymore, I'll notify you. Thanks. N

    Ha! Yes, I know cliche disease well, but by a different name; hypo-bumper-sticker-mania. It's such a shame, too; seems to happen to otherwise bright, and promising young people. I'm not a jewler, though I did take a class in smithing in which we made a couple of silver castings using lost wax, and a centrifugal casting machine. I'm just making myself some little parts, and thought I might could learn something using jewler's techniques. And so, I did.
