Met him at Arizona my freshman year when we had class together and I got to know him and ended up spending some time around him doing projects and he’s a genuine good guy, I knew who he was at Serra and I knew he had the potential to be a star. I told everyone I knew at school to watch out for him but they all blew me off, then that Colorado game happened and the rest was history. I knew he had it in him, I knew he was still the athlete he was in high school. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to develop a passing game like Coach Sumlin wanted to. Still love to watch him and JJ Taylor go to work!

After watching Sumlin at A&M I can tell you that Khalil's problem was Noel Mazzone. Sumlin was great with Kliff Kingsburry and Jake Spavital at the beginning. Spav was fired for being predictable and Noel was brought in. Noel was responsible for the epic collapse againt UCLA where A&M was up 5 touchdowns and lost by a point. The entire reason that happened was because Kellen Mond did not have any first team reps and had no timing for the receivers. So when Nick Starkel went down Kellen went like 3-25 passing. Obviously without Noel, and the addition of Jimbo Fisher, Kellen has become a decent quarterback in the SEC finishing third in stats behind Tua and Joe last year. For some reason Kevin is ride or die with Noel. If he doesnt break that tie he will not be a head coach much longer.

As a Purdue fan we played him at the end of that crazy freshman year. Luckily we got the W. It seems like playcalling killed him. You gotta call to your player's strengths. Khalil Tate wasnt a good enough passer to scare teams. It's no surprise that his 5 TD passing game against Purdue came because they were so scared of his legs. Forcing a running QB to be a passer just doesnt work

He was great. The game is brutal. His 2 predecessors, Anu Solomon and Brandon Dawkins, both transferred (*Baylor & Indiana) and both were injured to the point of quitting the game. The case against "Rich-Rod" upset the team and fans. Tate and the Wildcats had to deal with a new coaching regime and haven't been winning under Sumlin. Good luck in the NFL, Tate - I think he'll play and play well. Tate is a very gifted athlete ... still.

As an Arizona alum I've watched Tate in person and on TV. The starting point for his downfall was the Rich Rod scandal (look into it) that forced UofA to fire him. UofA's personnel was entirely set up to be a run-heavy offence. In fact only the Triple option teams ran for more yards per game. The O-line was not built for pass protection. When Sumlin and Malzone came in and wanted to go more pass heavy, Tate's biggest flaw was discovered. He was only thought to be a good passer because the threat he tucks and runs gave him ample opportunities to hit wide open receivers. Once he had to pass on the reg, we all saw he is inconsistent. Through his time at UofA, Tate was better throwing on the run rather than in the pocket but the coaches wouldn't let him do that and Tate was too arrogant to do it instead focusing on himself trying to prove he could be a pocket passer Look at what happened with Grant Gunnell when he replaced Tate as the starter. Gunnell is a pocket passer, pro style QB. That's Sumlin's and Malzone's bread and Butter. Arizona's pass game improved with him at the helm.

Kevin Sumlin happened. Hes an Air Raid coach which is also what went wrong at A&M. The pure air raid doesn’t work in the SEC which is why he failed. Tate is a running QB without much passing ability like Sumlin needs so it didn’t work out at all

After his sophomore season he spent the summer in LA training with a former NFL player who told him, "Do you want to win the Heisman or make millions dollars in the NFL? Teams want players that can throw." So he abandoned the run to show prospective NFL teams that he could pass, problem is he couldn't. There were even rumors he was checking out of designed QB run plays to pass.

Instead of installing a new offense, Sumlin and Mazzone should have stayed with the Read Option offense that was so successful. Then, they could have slowly installed a new offensive look. Too many changes too soon. Plus Sumlin couldn't recruit, so the team lost confidence...

the offensive scheme that noel mazzone runs vs rich rod runs is night & day, tho they are both spread schemes the passing game scheme from rich rod uses is very elementary level and limited while noel mazzone pass game scheme is similar to the air raid so the read progressions is totally different plus he has very poor throwing mechanics and his footwork was very inconsistent which ultimately effected his play
