- Ukraine’s counter-offensive to recapture the Russian-occupied Kherson region is "gathering pace", according to Western military sources.
A key bridge into the southern city of Kherson is out of action after Ukrainian forces struck it with long-range rockets supplied by the US.
UK defence officials said the city is now "virtually cut off from other occupied territories".
However, senior Ukrainian figures warned that Russia was now shifting its forces to defend the southern area.

Need to attri enemy assets and make them pay by also attri their supply chain to a almost cut off location...there is no need to launch a quick counter attack yet especially when the enemy is at the end of a long logistic train. And even when the enemy build up further to make future advance....that build up is within range to be attri thus forever trying to build up enough assets and supplies for a major offensive. Do enough damage in time enough, the enemy will have no choice but to leave/relocate to "safer" grounds.
Ukraine has tried twice in the last week to move forward near Kherson and were dealt with promptly by Russia paratroopers...What people don't realise is Ukraine soldiers have to cross miles of open ground to get to Kherson and Russia's artillery will obliterate them ....Russian soldiers are not cut off ....they can use the dam to cross ,they have 3 pontoon bridges and barges and the bridge has now been repaired .....Russia has been building up their munitions in Kherson for the last 2 months....Russia has 60 a/c in Crimea ready to wreak havoc any attempt to take Kherson...Russia doesn't have to move its forces from Donbas they have 40,000 Chechens based in Crimea...

It actually doesn't matter too much. Without the bridges they'll no longer be able to maintain the massive supply of artillery shells that their troops rely on for dominance.
All part of tactics. It was quite probably done with the intent of getting Russia to redirect troops. With the main supply routes cut , the more troops Russia has in the area , the better for Ukraine as Russia then has more difficulty supplying them and there are less Russians in other areas.

There is currently no Ukrainian counter offensive at Kherson. However, there are possible preparations for a counter-offensive. It seems that modern journalists lack the necessary military vocabulary to convey accurately what is happening.
Mark, I think those journalists know exactly what they are doing. We see UK public funds used extensively for propaganda ie lying to the same people that fund the public media, just like I see this happening across Europe. Regardless of what side anyone supports, public media must provide the best quality real news that enables the citizens to make decisions on whether to support the government or oppose it vis a vis its Ukraine policy. The fact that the governments are not allowing public media to provide balanced news in my opinion means that there would be a problem in support of the governments position if they were to do so. In other words the governing parties are using public funds for political purposes.

Ukraine goes for Kherson because it has a major stategic value - its the gate for Crimea. Kherson is the place where the Crimea aquaduct is located (the cannal that diverts watter from Dneper to Crimea). Its the main watter suppy for Crimea and it was the first thing the russians aimed for in the war. At the moment even Lavrov stated that they are aiming to absorb Kherson region into Russia in order to secure Crimea.
Also because Kherson is a bit easier to take as its located on the Ukrainian's side of the Dneper and that river is massive , you cant just ford it like the russians did with Severodonetzk and Lesichansk.
The only realistic goal Ukraine can have is to negotiate a peace treaty with Russia. Beggars cannot be choosers

It actually is a game changer, if the bridge over the Dnipro River is completely destroyed then there will be no reinforcements for the Russian in Kherson except from the water reservoir dam to the north. The river is far too wide to just build a pontoon bridge across like with the Siversky-Donets River in Sievierodonetsk, that'd be like trying to build a pontoon bridge over the Missouri River, it's too wide and fast-moving

It's far too early to negotiate anything with Russia. Negotiations will commence in earnest only after Ukraine's entire infrastructure has been destroyed. And not a day sooner.

Some holes on the bridge deck doesn't mean that the bridge has suffered unrepairable structural damage. Moreover others reported that the antonievsky bridge hit but repaired and railway bridge in parallel to this is fully repaired and operational.
Moreover Russian forces build 3 panto on bridges and weeks months ago use many boats and ferries to move their supplies.
If all the above are ignored then I am afraid that the Much expected counteroffensive by UA might get nasty surprises by the Russians.... Ukraine has tried twice in the last week to move forward near Kherson and were dealt with promptly by Russia paratroopers...What people don't realise is Ukraine soldiers have to cross miles of open ground to get to Kherson and Russia's artillery will obliterate them ....Russian soldiers are not cut off ....they can use the dam to cross ,they have 3 pontoon bridges and barges and the bridge has now been repaired .....Russia has been building up their munitions in Kherson for the last 2 months....Russia has 60 a/c in Crimea ready to wreak havoc any attempt to take Kherson...Russia doesn't have to move its forces from Donbas they have 40,000 Chechens based in Crimea...

The Ukrainians have liberated more territory around Kherson than they lost during the Russian offensive in Luhansk so in spite of all the attrition suffered by the Russians they now control less Ukrainian territory than they did before they launched their offensive.

You cannot report accurately on what is happening in Kherson from Kiey. Do you think we are all stupid ? The reporter is closer to Moscow than to Kherson, is he going to report on what is happening in Moscow ? Propaganda is not accurate news. The bridges in Kherson were being repaired on Friday 29th July already . Kherson is not cut off from the East as other reporters have travelled to Kherson from the east to make their reports on the bridges.
