VENDEE GLOBE - KERGUELEN

- With the precious support of the French Navy (Marine Nationale Française) and French television TF1, a team of two people (Fulvio d'Aguanno et Tanguy Thuaud) from Nefertiti Prod. spent forty days onboard the Frégate - helicopter carrier - NIVOSE in order to shoot videos from the Vendée Globe sailors around the Kerguelen Islands, in the south Indian Ocean.
Alex Thomson - The BOSS. It couldn’t be visualised better. Thanks for the algorithm bringing this up again right now when his boat is in trouble in Cape Town and has to return strong as back then!
@@alexandermenck6609 who's the Boss 😂😂
the boss that fell asleep and hit Martinique Island
Seamanship beyond belief …..🇬🇧 🇫🇷 Incredible !
Alex at the end there... What a legend! That boat was moving!!
Terrible la valentía y el corage de estos navegantes solitarios. Bravo!! 👏 👏
Beautiful Anglo French video. Great work by the French navy.
Where is the Anglo part ? Vendee globe is French.
It struck me watching this, the relationship AT has had with helicopters is very profound; his dad being a rescue pilot, the heartbreak at knowing it would be impossible for him to become a pilot for ophtamological reasons, his own psychological technique for mind adjustements imagining a difficult situation from a metaphorical overview from an imaginary helicopter looking down and examining an issue "from a distance" to find an objective solution to a given problem, and this footage especially, which I believe cements Alex as one of the greatest legends in sailing history. I am so heartbroken he will not be racing the Vendée Globe in 2024.
The designers and builders of these machines never get enough credit
I DO NOT AGREE.
Being proud of his work, being proud of his country, doing his job with enthusiasm, love and honor is an appreciated approach.
Congratulations, I support.
Me too! And I will never say a joke about a white flag/ France ever again. This footage is amazing
He had to act quickly and, some would say, carelessly. But what could he do? The Acheron was just over the horizon.
Respect. She's a tough nut to crack.
Wow! That's some hard-core sailing!
Amazing that guy running around on deck doing 20+ knots and not even a life chord on - either one with the sea or completely nuts . Great shots .
Completely nuts....no , I would suggest that he has very large nuts!
That's the first thing I looked for to see if he was tied in.
10 bucks says he only comes on deck in those conditions without being tied on is when there is a naval frigate and helicopter or 2 within reach.
@@brinjoness3386 $20 says he's had to use the tether instead to hold his enormous balls.
I think he realizes that if he falls overboard with a life line he will be dragged through the cold Southern Ocean at 10+ knots until he is dead.
That was such an incredible machine and I was lucky enough to see it docked. I could barely put my phone done during that race.
This is amazing !
Sensationelle Aufnahmen.
Respekt, vor allem!!!!!!!!!
I love that event. I may have once entertained idea of racing in the Tour de France, but I would never dream of racing the VG.

Amazing...Alex going up on deck on a sidewards boat. All sails up smashing along.
Cardinal rule broken by this sailor, but...you got the balls of a true adventurer.
ignatz mouse the moment got the better of him... I hope he had a safety harness and line on.....
@@petyrkowalski9887 Lol, there is a helo right there
Just wow - had to play this one more than once. My god the speed and at that location! whew!
Alex Thompson is the business. Real sailing hero stuff! Skipping across the cabin roof to hold up the British Flag! Coming upright from 70 degree angle!
Yeah! I agree! ...but part of me was concerned that an over the top wave would wash him off of the boat..how easily that could happen.
Yeah, essentially doing the same speed as Armel on Banque Pop, but at a 30 degree higher heel angle due to his missing starboard foil. Pretty crazy and I think only few would dare to push that hard.
Yeah this last scene was epic ... Really powerful
26 years seagoing experience and all I can say is WOW.
Alex Thomson having fun in the roaring forties. Go Alex. Go!
Continue to make us dream ⛵
I was sure the BOSS would flip over! I would love so much to be on one of these sailboats. My dream!
Admirre him, not just his money , his brains and braves.
Such a cool boat.
What a spirit going on there!
Exelent video and nice British flag on peaceful eco-friendly beautiful hi-tech Sailboat machinery
Ahhh, carbon fiber has a huge carbon footprint like everything we do... it's just a matter of perspective
I cannot believe that bloke went out up on deck just to fly the Union Jack not tethered. At least there was rescue available I suppose. 🇦🇺👍🍺
The guy who painted Axel Thomson's boat must have wondered why they asked him to write stuff on the underside. Now he knows.
Back in the day we raced little single handed dingys, painted ‘ oh shit’ or worse on the underside of the hulls as we capsized so often...not tolerated by the officials....same went for chasing the Isle of Wight ferry to knock on the transom...lol fun things are not tolerated as much now if at all...
holy moly - thats unreal. Balls of steel
We stay speechless... The navy guys are also impressive ;-)
Yeh its great to see the navy doing something other than killing children for a change

Ces images de cette courses au large !!! Thomson aux trousses du breton resteront gravées à jamais.
We saw the boss boat on the Hudson River yesterday from the one world observatory, way cool
Outrageous!! Thanks for posting
Quel merveilleux bateau que celui d ALEX THOMSON , un sacré marin il aurait mérité de remporter un Vendée Globe
Amazing to see the speed of a high tech mono hull.
The Comanche is at the top of the list for me personally...
what an incredible footage. Well done.
The Hugo Boss boat looks gorgeous
In the southern Indian Ocean powering upwind on a close reach, totally overpowered because the optics make it look incredible (Brits vs the French)....and then the angles sing to uplift the viewers perception.
You know, I don’t speak french but i know balls of steel when i see them. And then my flag comes out. It may be my age or the jubilee but, God save the Queen and Vive La France.
The Vendee Globe is the greatest sailing race!
Thanks to the French Navy and TF1 for filming this classic video. Armel and Alex racing flat out in the wilderness of the Southern Ocean. Still the two fastest times in the Vendee Globe.
Thank you for the upload.
Boss on his broken foil looking awesome. Good luck this year Alex!
Great pictures 🤩
French and Brits respect each other so much
Stunning film.
Different breed, impressive!
Cool sailing ...
Balls of Steel .
Jesus christ.... full sheets in a friggin gale. Haha, the balls. Absolutely beautiful
Hugo Boss with its 3 sails gives a beautiful rendition.
but it is basically a submarine :-)
That is some BADASS sailing!
I hope more "other than french" sailors will be involved in off shore races in the next years. Too much money for America's Cup, and so few for guys who would like to quit the bays and face the high seas.
Absolutely stunning !
Stunning
Beautifull boat!
MAGNIFICENT!
Merveilleux marins...
First time in many years I have seen a world class high speed yacht. They look loaded with technology nobody had back in the 70's and 80's. How the heck is the black ship running so well while it looks at least partially submerged a lot of the time?
Their daggerboards have been moved from pointing straight down and just providing tracking in a line to coming off the side with crazy curves and they provide tremendous lift while submerged so the hull isn't really dragging so much at all.
@@efstopp except the leward foil has snapped off in this footage. Its actually really a great comparison with Banque populare gliding more gracefully over the swell whilst Alex Thompson on Hugo Boss just smashed through it without the added lift. The feat of coming second with a broken fin for 70% of the race is probably the greatest sporting achievement in human history yet few know about it.
@@hambamableinteresting, thanks.
Perfect!
beautiful❤️❤️❤️
Jesus! Overpowered or what??
Those guys have balls!!
balls of steel
Scott K No those guys are stupid without a Life line 🤦♂️
Super!
Magniefique merci
Superb vid well done
nice video
I've buried the rail before...but never ever like that!
We are looking at the most modern ideas introduced in solo hull sailing. The hull is definitely a planing hull with two rudders to ensure that at least one is immersed in the water. The wings on the side and lateral movement of the dead weight under the hull adds to stability. The transom is wide and the sail profile is well cut . Ar 1:12 we see the side wing which adds stability and lift too. Well , it is not such a comfortable ride but, my my it is very fast. The manner in which the water leaves the transom, is an indication that at high speed both propellers and rudders need to be designed with a sharp end rather than the streamlined profile we normally use at slower speed. It is interesting that there is no creature in nature that operates at such condition as creatures evolve to be very meagre on the use of energy . Still nature teaches us a lot and a good designer must keep his eye on nature. Congratulations to all engineers who made all that appears in this video so possible to be viewed at our homes. Engineers are basically a young profession and starting accelerating its ingenuity only about 100 years ago. No other profession in the human fraternity has ever contributed so much comfort and assistance to the human race. One hopes that an engineer's intelligence is not used to destroy the world with pollution, as all that we see in this video , did pollute the earth in some ways or another. We must be careful about the equation with relates our comforts and the manner in which we use the materials and the pollution necessary to shape them into out home comforts. Still, it is a wonderful feeling knowing that engineers are moving at such a fast pace and other professions gain by the engineering products , but do not admit it that most of their successes is due to them applying engineering including the classical arts which were always hesitant to accept the fact that all their art is based on engineering foundations!
Carmel Pule' what propeller do you have in mind?
Arno van Dalsum, Sir, I had in mind surface propellers and cupped ones as they operate totally different from submerged propellers. The boat in the video is going so very fast that all the " trailing parts" as transom, rudders etc need to be truncated and not necessarily streamlined. I designed high speed propellers and rudders "and boats" where the high speed does not need streamlining at the rear ends but airation produce a better performance. It is the same with aircraft really and the upper section of a wing need not be curved to provide vacuum as the lower side provides high enough pressure to do the lifting. I hope that is now understood.
The next generation has no keel and much bigger wings. The Vendee Globe will not be won by a monohull that planes best, it will fly.
@@ablejack3 Let's see in 2020 !!
@@ablejack3 So monohulls finally became multihulls ?
This is exactly what adventure looks like
Freaking awesome!,👍
The moment when you start wondering if you should be wearing a diver suit instead of a hooded jacket
Very good
Incredible
Amazing.
WOW! Not for me, but seriously awesome!
That was cool...in a terrifying way.
Hugo Boss looks like the first sailing submarine
Lol
The first week ashore after such a trip, you are officially considered insane ..👍
Amazing
"Hugo Boss, this is French frigate Nivôse"...instant reaction, flying the Union Jack...
Normal reaction for the better ennemies ;-) .... at least the French frégate did disturb Thompson in English ;-) la classe !
It seems that my boyfriend once again used my account by mistake ... I apologize if he made rude comments which is far from how I choose to live my life.
That's Living Life!
Extraordinaires voiliers
That Boss boat looks like it was going over
These boats just don't
It's worth the respect
That is one mother of a keel to bring the boat back upright from a 70deg angle!
I was wondering if it was going to over. That is a helluva roll.
thought the same so I looked it up, seems its a canting keel, it pivots to starboard or port, its not a traditional stationary keel and is used with foils primarily
@Yacht 46
Each boat must pass a roll over test before allowed entry
That’s insane but I love it
Insane!
Absolut mad lad!
the Hugo Boss projecting British power! I love it... amazing vessel!
Why is it people doing something so spectacular can bring nations together ??
They set full sails on a sea where cruisers and tankers would stay at port
Great !
Damn, that's incredible! But it's way too short! Is there more footage?
It is all high te h. Sad day for the romance of sailing.
Remember Éric Tabarly?
Now that was classy by the British guy lol, very cool lol
the best
Like a BOSS!
Amazing!!!
