- With the precious support of the French Navy (Marine Nationale Française) and French television TF1, a team of two people (Fulvio d'Aguanno et Tanguy Thuaud) from Nefertiti Prod. spent forty days onboard the Frégate - helicopter carrier - NIVOSE in order to shoot videos from the Vendée Globe sailors around the Kerguelen Islands, in the south Indian Ocean.
26 years seagoing experience and all I can say is WOW.
I was sure the BOSS would flip over! I would love so much to be on one of these sailboats. My dream!
The guy who painted Axel Thomson's boat must have wondered why they asked him to write stuff on the underside. Now he knows.
Back in the day we raced little single handed dingys, painted ‘ oh shit’ or worse on the underside of the hulls as we capsized so often...not tolerated by the officials....same went for chasing the Isle of Wight ferry to knock on the transom...lol fun things are not tolerated as much now if at all...

Михрентий, рули с каждого борта, второе перо руля ты не видишь, оно в воде :-)))
Цей корппус має два кіля і два руля, корма майже катамаранна.
@@samodelkinvoyak , там один фальшкиль. даже вернее крыло с бульбом, которое может отклоняться к бортам в зависимости от галса, силы ветра и крена . @@КонстантинБахтурин Що ж, прогрес рухається вперед, з тих пір як я продав свою яхту я за змінами в цій царині не слідкую. Сім років, це багато. Видно що ефективність нових рішень очевидна, при такій навантаженості судна парусами, при кренах і захваті парусами води, не піти в брочинг, це дійсно досягнення конструкторів.

I hope more "other than french" sailors will be involved in off shore races in the next years. Too much money for America's Cup, and so few for guys who would like to quit the bays and face the high seas.

That's the first thing I looked for to see if he was tied in.
10 bucks says he only comes on deck in those conditions without being tied on is when there is a naval frigate and helicopter or 2 within reach.

I think he realizes that if he falls overboard with a life line he will be dragged through the cold Southern Ocean at 10+ knots until he is dead.

He lost his right foil in the beginning. That is the reason why it performed so bad.
First time in many years I have seen a world class high speed yacht. They look loaded with technology nobody had back in the 70's and 80's. How the heck is the black ship running so well while it looks at least partially submerged a lot of the time?
Their daggerboards have been moved from pointing straight down and just providing tracking in a line to coming off the side with crazy curves and they provide tremendous lift while submerged so the hull isn't really dragging so much at all.
@@efstopp except the leward foil has snapped off in this footage. Its actually really a great comparison with Banque populare gliding more gracefully over the swell whilst Alex Thompson on Hugo Boss just smashed through it without the added lift. The feat of coming second with a broken fin for 70% of the race is probably the greatest sporting achievement in human history yet few know about it.

It struck me watching this, the relationship AT has had with helicopters is very profound; his dad being a rescue pilot, the heartbreak at knowing it would be impossible for him to become a pilot for ophtamological reasons, his own psychological technique for mind adjustements imagining a difficult situation from a metaphorical overview from an imaginary helicopter looking down and examining an issue "from a distance" to find an objective solution to a given problem, and this footage especially, which I believe cements Alex as one of the greatest legends in sailing history. I am so heartbroken he will not be racing the Vendée Globe in 2024.

Yeah! I agree! ...but part of me was concerned that an over the top wave would wash him off of the boat..how easily that could happen.
Yeah, essentially doing the same speed as Armel on Banque Pop, but at a 30 degree higher heel angle due to his missing starboard foil. Pretty crazy and I think only few would dare to push that hard.

thought the same so I looked it up, seems its a canting keel, it pivots to starboard or port, its not a traditional stationary keel and is used with foils primarily

Thanks to the French Navy and TF1 for filming this classic video. Armel and Alex racing flat out in the wilderness of the Southern Ocean. Still the two fastest times in the Vendee Globe.

Why is it people doing something so spectacular can bring nations together ??
The designers seem to have made a hullshape which is suitable for flatwater sailing and not for this type of ocean conditions. That narrow bow is a real problem in this kind of sea state and which is stuffing and slowing the boat considerabley. What they should have is a wider outline forward, so that when the boat is healed at those angles the bow will be higher and not stuff because the more rockered leeward hill side will provide lift rather stuffing that narrow bow.
The hull sides could also benefit from being rounded/convex in shape. I'm sure that one day they will come to this realisation.
I cannot believe that bloke went out up on deck just to fly the Union Jack not tethered. At least there was rescue available I suppose. 🇦🇺👍🍺

In the southern Indian Ocean powering upwind on a close reach, totally overpowered because the optics make it look incredible (Brits vs the French)....and then the angles sing to uplift the viewers perception.
