My OWC TB5 Dock arrived on 29th December (its more like the equivalent of a TB5 Caldigit Elements Hub than a Dock). Its connected to a 14"MBP (M4 Pro) and plugged into it are: 1. Cadigit Elements Hub with Dual Apple Studio Displays 2. Inateck USB4 Enclosure wiith Hynix P.41 2TB NVME (Write 3,500MBps, Read 3,302MBps-using 5GB Stress test on BlackMagic disk test 3. . 2nd Caldigit Elements hub with Acasis Enclosure and WD Black 2TB SN770 (3099 Write, 2900 Read) and dual 2.5 Gbe USN Adapters connected 4. USB A with Logitech Bolt So far no issues, slightly faster transfer speeds using Enclosures and no dramas. And yes it will drive dual 5K Studio displays @60Hz either connected directly or via another UBB4 Hub connected to one of the TB5 ports on the dock
I really appreciate the fact that this is a *hub* and not a *dock*. Sure, you could add ethernet... and SD card slots... and more USB-A ... and HDMI... and DisplayPort... but I'm not looking for another $400 all-in-one device. I already have an older dock for all of that. What I don't have is enough ports on my M4 Pro Mac Mini to connect 3 monitors, my dock, and an external Thunderbolt 5 drive. This gives me a (relatively) low cost way to simply add two (net) T5 ports as a sort of stop-gap until the T5 eco system is more mature. Particularly the 2024 Mac Mini form factor dock market.
It would be great if they made a Thunderbolt hub that fits either under or on top of the Mac mini as well as one for the Mac Studio. Thanks Aaron for another great video! Happy New Year, all! 🎉
Had a TB 4 OWC hub and it worked flawlessly. However I really disliked the port that connected to the was on the FRONT of the hub. Happily, they moved it to the back.
I am a fan of OWC products, and have purchased at least a dozen over the years. What still amazes me is that they do not have a dock with internal NVME capacity: there are several brands that do.
Thanks for the initial review. It should have used USBC power imo. Also missing SD Card slot and headphone jack not just ethernet. Is it a different range compared to the external drive, the gloss finish was a complete mismatch when you connected both units
Hi Aaron, When testing the new OWC Thunderbolt 5 Hub with only my MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) and one of my ACASIS TB4 SSD Enclosures I only get around 950MB/s write speed, 2800MB/s read speed with the new Hub. When connected directly to my MacBook the read and write speeds are both 2800MB/s, any ideas ???
First make sure the cable is TB4, next make sure it's going to one of the TB docks in back. Isolate it so no other devices are plugged into the hub first to see if that makes a difference. Please report back what you find, this could be crucial info people need to know on deciding whether to buy: because a TB4 hub will perform better than that and cost less.
@@Äpple-pie-5k @zollotech The Write speeds are the same (950MB/s) when using any of the ports on the Hub. I have also tried using Thunderbolt 4 cables as well as Thunderbolt 5 cables and it makes no difference. One thing I did notice today was that the Hub initially only connected to the MacBook and SSD at an even slower 43MB/s speed until the Thunderbolt 5 cable connecting the MacBook to the Hub was disconnected and reconnected on the MacBook. It then started working again at 950MB/s Write and 2800MB/s Read. I also received a reply from OWC following my email to them and they have replied saying that :- "Customers may experience slower performance speeds (mainly write speeds) when using external storage devices with Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 docks and hubs. Slower performance has been experienced on Intel/M1 Macs and also Windows PCs. These performance decreases are seen when using external storage devices through hubs/docks over Thunderbolt 4/5, and are not isolated solely to OWC products. Our Engineering Team continues to evaluate drive performance over Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 in an effort to improve speeds. I do hope they will be able to identify a fix for the issue, but it does sound like a problem that has been around for a while and may come from an Intel implementation / chip design perspective. Obviously from Aaron's video the Hub appears to work fine with Thunderbolt 5 SSD Enclosures, but not good if you want to get the best speeds out of your Thunderbolt 4 Enclosures.
I have the same problem. Write speeds through with two of my thunderbolt 4 drives is about 500MB/s. One of them get 1300MB/s all three of them have read speeds of 2800MB/s. Apple system says that the hub is giving them access to 40GB of bandwidth. OWC have just asked me to do a ton of diagnostic tests involving plugging in to other machines. I have tried every combination I can. My thunderbolt 4 drives average 2500 MB/s write when plugged directly into my Mac Mini M4 Pro. Through the hub they crawl, even when they are they only thing plugged in. I think something may be off and they will need to release a firmware update. I would hold off buying for a while. Mine is going back.
I would have liked to see three 3.1 USB A ports for "legacy" devices. Devices like the new M4 Mac Mini Pro have no USB A ports so it's really helpful to have a hub that offers those USB A ports.
I'd like to see everything USB C style. If you're rockin' a $200 dock running off some M4 Pro with thunderbolt 5, you should have sold your legacy stuff on Craigslist first. But if you really need it get a USB-C-to-A dongle. It's 2025 for heaven's sake, stop making us use 2012 ports in the name of everything holy! Especially stop making us use USB-A-to-C convertors. And it's not portable either, so that's not a reason for it.... Also, why is the port you connect your PC to on the back, and not the one on the front? How many external screens will simultaneously operate through this hub? My current hub I have to plug one hdmi into the MacBook Pro w/ M4 Pro chip directly. I’m looking for a hub that will support 3 screens simultaneously via one card to the MacBook.
Yeah let's tell 'em to also make the power-input USBc for compatibility with multiport GaN chargers, and to swap out the USB-A port for a USB-C with a little $1.50 C-to-A adaptor thrown in the box. I'd pay $300 for this instead of being constantly annoyed by looking every day at my desk at how my hub falls short.
Does it use just one bus on the computer? Or, does this hub has its own bus built in? I've had problems with hubs before with multiple ports but still uses one usb bus on the computer causing some equipment to choke.
Your only complaint is no ethernet, mine would be that this is a hub with hardly any additional ports. It gives you 2 additional TB5 ports one standard USBC and one USBA not great in my mind. When you mentioned the price I thought wow thats cheap for TB5 whats the catch. Let's hope they bring out other TB5 hubs with more ports.

Appreciate your reviews Aaron, but the PR max max you receive makes it hard for any human not to render unbiased opinions. PS TB5 seems very incremental (despite its theoretical 2x bandwidth than TB4) and only in highly specific use cases would it make more than an SFA difference. ❤😊
Not really in the market for a hub right now, but this does feel a bit in line of what I would expect for a hub of this size. I personally would like to see another USB A/C port on the front, but this should satisfy the needs of most users (laptop, 2 monitors, 1 USB A accessory, 1 USB C accessory). Kinda sucks that the industry is still in a space where USB A is needed, so you will always see hubs with at least 1 USB A port to accommodate that.
