Clank Catacombs is SO good. The exploration and building of the map is great. The way the map tiles connect together and you need to figure out how to navigate to where you want to get is really interesting. Also it’s really great that in both that and Dune Imperium there is a part of each round that involves all players. Pulling clank out of the bag and the battle in dune.
My favorite game is probably still Gaia Project but it’s a bit too heavy for my wife so I don’t get to play it much.

    • @tomlikeabomb6706
      @tomlikeabomb6706 ปีที่แล้ว

My favorite things in games are tactical movement on a board, exploration, building things on a board, deck building, clever cardplay, being able to take more risk for possibly more reward, having enough options that you feel you’re figuring something out on your turn, and things that cause the players to communicate during the game.

    • @tomlikeabomb6706
      @tomlikeabomb6706 ปีที่แล้ว

Also unique player powers and deduction.

@@tomlikeabomb6706 How does it compare to "Clank in Space"?

    • @tomlikeabomb6706
      @tomlikeabomb6706 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Reggie1408 I haven’t played Clank in Space in years because my copy got water damaged when our basement flooded. From memory though, I like Catacombs a lot more. I think it has more going on. You’re building the map as you go, there are prisoners, lockpick tokens to manage, ghost tiles, etc. The way the whole map comes together in a unique way each time is great. And you need to figure out how to navigate it to be able to do what you want. The rooms connect in interesting ways. Portals let you hop around to different parts of the map. It gives me a great sense of exploration and adventure and greed as you try to get a little bit more before making your escape.
Prior clank games might have just been a bit too light for me and this one gives me that extra bit to think about each turn. You reconsider the map each turn because you don’t know what will show up. There are no set paths. It unfolds as you go. I really enjoy it. Figuring out how to move around on a board is one of my favorite things in games.

My favorite game from your list is Dune Imperium. Hard to say what my favorite game is, but Scythe and Tapestry are most likely competing for the top spot in my mind. Catan will always be in my top 10 as it (and it's various versions and expansions) was the main game I played for many years before exploring more in the hobby.

Great list! My favorite from your list is Dune Imperium. I love working within those limitations of the cards and spaces. Usually a tight game in scoring too.

Skull King has been a surprise hit with my group in the last eight months, playing 7-8 players constantly.
Zero bids were getting out of hand with the four advanced cards, we reigned them in by removing the two loot cards, replacing them with two custom cards:
Jonah - plays like White Whale, except lowest card wins
Mutiny- Pirates become escapes, escapes become Pirates
Both cards reigned in the zero bids, as before they were way too easy, giving folks incentives to play 1-2 card bids instead.

Color me intrigued! I'm just waiting on the pledge manager to open. Great list, and thanks for sharing the details of each game and why you love it so much. I think I've played and enjoyed almost all of your top 10, but my favorite from your top 10 is easily Ark Nova as well. I can't wait to get it to the table as often as I can. As for my #1 game right now, and I expect to hold for years to come, is Trickerion. I just love the variability, theme, and complexity each time I'm able to play. Favourite game right now: Twilight Imperium 4. Even with a slightly dodgy play experience recently it still is magic.

Hi Jamey! I ordered "Skull King" because of your high Ranking. Played lots of Wizard with my kids two years ago, but then we got tired of it. Especially because of the scoring. And long time I thought it would more or less the same with Skull King. But what a misjudgment! Played the second game with my kids this morning and we had such a blast! So much fun. And such a better system to score points in multiple ways. Really, really great!

from Your list my favourite is Dune Imperium. Love the tension that intrigue deck creates in that game. I think that is my favourite part of it. My all time favourite currently is probably a tie between Castles of Burgundy and On Mars. Castles because it is easy to teach and get to the table and it is a pure joy to play for me. On Mars because I love a heavy Euro and at this moment in time On Mars is the best I have played of that type. Also I mostly play board games at 2 player player count and both of those work very well at 2.

I always find it fascinating that any hobbyist doesn't own all of their top 10 games, but I have found myself in that boat recently. Scythe is still my favorite SM game but it is also my favorite game that I don't own.
My favorite game is Blood Rage and my favorite game on your list is Dune: Imperium, but only if played with both expansions. With Ix and Immortality, it became my #3 game just after Terraforming Mars.

My favorite game at the moment is Wingspan. The favorite game from your list is Ark Nova (probably my 3rd favorite currently). One thing that I love and really invested me in both games is their connection to a piece of nostalgia from my childhood.
The Wildlife Treasury cards were these encyclopedic entries of hundreds of animals produced in the late 70s that came on cards a little smaller than a 5x7 photo. Folks may remember them as the cards in the green plastic case. A card’s front featured a great big photo of an animal with the animal’s name and a few icons. The icons encode information from geography and habitat to taxonomy. The similarities between the icons and the tags on Ark Nova cards is immediately striking. The back features much of the information one might expect from an encyclopedia. The flavor text on Wingspan’s card design (in addition the all the info presented through symbology) gives me another connection to Wildlife Treasury. While both games are mechanically sound and engrossing in their own right, they provide something I always wanted to do as a kid but probably never realized: take these fascinating but pure educational cards with every animal I could imagine and engage with them in a new way: through play.

Favorite game on your list is Clank! I agree that combination of deck building and dungeon crawling with push your luck is a winner! The game I keep going back to right now, and leaving on the table (somewhat by necessity), is Aeon Trespass: Odyssey. The world building that this game does is unmatched in board games, and the technology and gear upgrades are so satisfying. It has a lot of rules overhead, but it introduces them gradually in a natural way. Love. It.

nice list, I haven't heard of Skull King or Rumble Nation but I'm interested in giving them a go. From your list Dune Imperium is my favorite. I'm really surprised how much I like it, since I played Lost Ruins of Arnak first, but the tension of the impending conflict and the race to 10 points draws me in so well. I don't have any attachment to the Dune ip either. My favorite game of all time is Spirit Island. It's just a fantastic co-op game that's heavy enough to really get my brain burning and thematic enough to feel intuitive to some degree. I also love how scalable it is, allowing me to play really hard with some and really basic when I'm teaching someone the game.

That’s a hard decision. Lots of great games on your list. My pick would be probably be Clank! My favorite board game of all time is Wingspan. :) I do have a question: Since you love Space Base, have you ever played Bad Company? Similar dice rolling mechanics but you play as a group of robbers running from the cops. Instead of upgrading spaceships, you upgrade your gang members with different articles of clothing which give abilities. There’s a gold necklace that gets passed around that rewards you if you have it. There’s a police car chase on the board. You want to make sure you beat him by the end. There’s some added humor too with the art and gameplay. If you haven’t played, definitely check it out.

My number one of all time is actually a tie between Tapestry and Bunny Kingdom! Tapestry is officially my number one because it got there first, but my gosh i love them equally and so so much! good list as usual. I am currently just obsessed with Dune: Imperium not only have I fashioned improved components but like you, it inspired me to read the books. I devoured the first novel (and reawakened a fervor for reading that had gone slack) and will be reading the rest of the novels soon enough. I have a friend who loves to scope out used book stores and had a road trip from texas to WNY planned so I let him track them down for me, but in the mean time I started reading N. K. Jemison's Broken Earth trilogy (which I'm loving) so I'm gonna finish that first. but soon enough...plus ive rewatched the Denis Villenueve film like 3 times and even rewatched the Lynch film too lol. You're definitely right on with your statement about evoking the theme!

My favourite game on your list is Ark Nova. The variability is terrific and it’s never not satisfying watching the zoos build up over the duration. My biggest issue with it however is that my gaming group get very easily distracted in conversation, so it runs looooooong! As a result, it isn’t tabled half as much as I would like, sadly. It’s a little frustrating that my groups biggest issue with playing that game is a problem of their own making, but there it is! 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😮‍💨
It’s becoming apparent to me that in order to get heavier games to the table with my group, there has to be some element of simultaneous turn taking. On that note, I really want to get my mitts on Planet Unknown, but that’s not so easy to do in my neck of the woods currently.
A couple of random favourites of late have been Meadow, Paperback, and Carpe Diem.

@@Poiuytrew.Q Well if you're interested you can play online through MTG Arena without having to pay(you get some starter decks as you learn the game and gain ingame currency over time) or do a draft with friends. Playing Magic doesn't mean playing competitive and buying expensive cards if you don't want to.

My number one from your list is Clank, but interestingly I prefer In Space, although the others are very good as well.
As for the number one of all time, the easy answer is Scythe, but Core Worlds could contend for that spot. It is such a good, tight deckbuilder, I recommend people try it!
Also, after hearing so many good things about it, especially from you, last night we played our first game of Dune Imperium. I am certain this one will rise in the ranks!

Favorite game in general: Gaia Project
I'll add that Viticulture is in my top 10, and Scythe and Tapestry both made my top 50 when I did the PubMeeple thing last week. I love all three of those games.
I assume I'd like Ark Nova, since my 3rd favorite game of all time is Terraforming Mars, and people often compare them.

Though I'm not 100% sure if it's my number 1, Wonderland's War is very high on my list of favorite games. I thought it might be on this list for you. Where does Wonderland's War sit for you and curious why it might not break the top 10 for you? It seems to have the component parts that would contend.

I own 5 through 10 except Ra, which I will have when the Kickstarter delivers. Quacks may be my favorite of those due to ease getting to the table and playing, but I really would like to play Dune Imperium and Planet Unknown again. My favorite of all time right now would probably Azul or Cascadia. I might lean towards Cascadia because it checks a lot of boxes for me. Tile-laying, drafting, and point salad scoring at the end.

My favourite game from your list is also Ark Nova. One of the few games that a played non stop when I initially got it. In fact I played 3 games back to back long into the night.
However my favourite game of all time is Wingspan with all the expansions. Its my happy place game. Easy & quick to set up, beautiful theme, rules that are embedded into my brain that don't need refreshing and always makes me feel similar to a walk in the countryside.

My favorite game right now is Wingspan. It would be Ark Nova, but that game is so long that I have trouble getting people to play it with me. Also, I just got Marrakesh and I am SUPER eager to play it. Wingspan wins overall, though, because I play it every other night with my husband and I can play the base game on BGA. We don't own Asia, but I own 3 copies of all of the others, because I teach classes for seniors on how to play strategy board games. Wingspan is about the most difficult game that they really enjoy. I can teach and play it in the time allocated for the class.

TY for sharing your top 10 > I sure must try some day DUNE !
Here is mine for the moment :
    1) Command & Colors Napoleonics & all expansion (7 boxes)
    2) Terraforming Mars & most expansions (even the new fan made "Pathfinders")
    3) Wingspan & all expansions (the very first game that seduced my wife! Normal: she wins most of the time! lol)
    4) Star Wars Rebellion & Rise of the Empire (full immersion)
    5) Eclipse (still waiting impatiently for the expansions in French)
    6) Zombicide Black Plague & many others (years of scenarios)
    7) Beyond the Sun (an underrated diamond - how strange is the taste of the others)
    8) Captain Sonar (did you say immersive? so many good laughs)
    9) Heat (If you are drunk you miss the next turn - I know - I tried)
    10) Pandemic (so efficient - I would never have imagined that a game about diseases could please my wife and daughter!)
And a little bonus for this last little jewel which will make people talk about it I think: Star Wars the Deck Building game.

I think both Dune: Imperium and Ark Nova are in my top 10 over all, Roll player (w/ expansions) is close. My favorite game overall though has to still be Blood Rage, with Magic: The gathering a close 2nd. Thanks for posting this Jamey! By the way, Tapestry is in my top 10 as well.

    Current Favorite games:
Seeland - It keeps coming back... use all the rules.
Ethnos - Always fun and provides variety in a simple card game... why no reprint or expansions?
Scorpius Freighter - what is better than a roundel game... one with 3 roundels. Snappy interesting turns with decisions that matter.
Crown of Emara - one less roundel but so many other great pieces here... love all the mechanics here.
51st State - love the theme and find each game unique as you try to discover synergies that get you there faster
The Everrain - most story games are coops that always make me wonder... why not play dnd... this one works and it's sorta semi coop... didn't see this coming.
Bruges - the classic... but I now play it with a few rule changes as introduced in the new version and it's even better.
Stone Age - I removed most of the meeples and replaced them with smaller dice to make it smoother to play... wow classics are fun.
Basilica - a reprint from Portal... this is a gem that was overlooked and seems to be off the radar again but... wow this is a solid two player game.
Council of 4 - is so satisfying to play for those long string of bonuses... maybe a reprint will bring this one back... it is saddly headed for obscurity.
Oh coarse I didn't say Neuroshima Hex but if you've never tried it... pick up the app put it on easy and have fun learning your new favorite game.

We enjoy quacks a lot. But feel 9 rounds is way too long. We house rule it that players start with extra ingredients and only play 8 rounds. Just makes the game more fun. DI reminds us of viticulture in the way you really earn those points and there is an interesting fight/ calculation to the top spot of the guild. Sometimes you have to hold back until you know you can get to the top first. Otherwise your opening yourself up to being cut off after spending valuable turns and effort.

@@jameystegmaier I havnt played the game yet, but think I will play similarly with no special cards or pirates, but with an alternate scoring method I found on BGG: +20 points per trick if correct. if guessed wrong - 10 points for each trick away from target (so if bid 5 tricks but only made 2, you lose 30 points)
