I like to think this is her last act of human conscience, reassuring words and a merciful death. Gods seem to be conscient but not in a human way, they seem to exist only ot represent a specific force like love or destruction
Weirdly enough, this god is probably the most merciful, humanity-loving god in the game's mythology She's only referred to as the god of fear and hunger because that's simply what that world needed to become better: hardship and strife. The influence of the old gods caused humanity to suffer and become self-destructive, with the absolute worst becoming leaders and powerful figures. The new gods, though they tried to set it right (most with selfish underlying intentions), failed spectacularly. Not only that, they simply weren't powerful enough to change much. However the Girl, her Ancient Soul merging with the god of the Depths, was.
Honestly, the thing that makes me hurt the most is the idea that the Little Girl is... gone. She isn’t actually gone. Notice how she looks fondly at the knife and doll you give her. She’s still in control. After all, fear is resolved through companionship and hunger through plentiful resources/prosperity, which is achieved through advancement.
Exactly lol, like I get that there are no good endings in a story like this but damn. I've actually taken to making a design for the girl in a hypothetical S ending for her. Basically the idea is that she DOES transform, but she keeps her humanity and mental stability... somehow. Design wise it's a combination of a bunch of the elements found in the different phases of her transformation during the fight with her, but still in human form. You'd escape instead of dying in the bottom. I think the story would work, since she still ascends and becomes the God of Fear and Hunger, it's just now its a cute abhuman God loli instead of whatever the last form is supposed to be. Maybe she'd just walk off into the fog in the end? Or she goes into the darkness in the void and we could potentially use the ending to show what's actually at the bottom
