  • Day 1 of how to paint a barn quilt block with Mike Tribe and Sandy Pennington. Mike has painted hundreds of barn quilts and donated them across the pacific northwest. This tutorial will show you the proper materials to purchase and why, paints, brushes, and much more! We also talk about barn quilt block history.

Hi Mike. I admire your talent, and appreciate the detailed visual and knowledgeable examples. I would like to know the product you use to seal outdoor quilts please. Thank you so much Shannon

Ahh, reading further I see Mike does not seal his quilts because of the quality of Behr paints.
If you could suggest a sealer that would not yellow with time Id be most appreciative.

I wanted to send you a note. I am completely new to the barn quilt process. I have made a cloth quilt before but nothing like this. I have watched several videos but yours is by far the best. I will have to get my boyfriend to do all the measurements (not my strong suit) but I am going to have fun with this. A cousin is redoing our grandmothers old farm house and there is a large wall in the living room that needs something big. His wife asked me to do something for this spot and what were might thoughts. I immediately thought of a barn quilt because they are getting ready to build a bar door from the living room to the sun porch and this will do nicely. SHOULD I get it to come out right, I will send you a picture. Again, great video and the tips you give are invaluable. Back to you in a couple of months well maybe a bit longer. Karen.

My husband called Behr and was informed that their 8 oz color samples are interior paint even though the container says “interior/exterior “.

Most all paint manufacturers use interior paint for their small samples. Barn quilt artists who use sample paint have to seal with a clear coat for that reason. All my barn quilts are painted with Behr Marquis EXTERIOR semi-gloss paint that I buy in quarts. I don’t seal my barn quilts because the paint is superior to sample paint, is UV and weather resistant, and is painted on MDO with two coats of primer.

Mike, what is your advice to a novice, I bought ACM and had the factory cut it but the 12" squares are 11 7/8". I'm perplexed as to how to do the measurements.

I use borders to even up the measurements if the material isn’t cut exact. I cut my own material for that reason.

Hi - the MDO board I found has a brown paper side (??) Do I prime the heck over that and the sides of the board? Seems like it would not like getting WET or moisture ?? thank you

I prime both sides of the MDO regardless of the factory prime. I also lightly caulk the edges to seal the grain and then prime and paint them.

What is the name of the tool Mike used to burnish the tape edges? I didn’t quite catch what he said. Want to get one of them. Thanks so much! Loved the videos!

This is awesome! I love the name! Our county added them to historic properties all around the three towns that make up Oconee County in South Carolina!

Thanks for the great Barn Quilt videos. Great information details.
Question…Does Mike seal his exterior Barn Quilts when they completely dry? If yes, what product does he use? This looks like something I want to try. Thanks again.😊

He does not. When I ask him this, he asks me if we seal the outside of our house.

@@saundrapennington2970 Thanks for letting me know. I look forward to seeing what hardware Mike uses to hang his Barn Quilts. Plus how Mike hangs his Barn Quilts. 😊
