I received the A9III 3 weeks ago an using now the Sony HVL-F60RM2 flash with this camera. This is by far the best flash for all SONY cameras. Nothing comes close to the Sony HVL-F60RM2 when using the camera in Hi+ mode.
After the firmware upgrade for the HVL-F60RM2 it is ideally suited to patterning with the A9III. Other flashes will tend to want to defer to HSS which is just not needed with the A9III
These settings are for Sony flashes used on / off camera. If using a off brand (Godox) transmitter & flash for off camera flash, any flash setting changes on the camera to ensure the flash & sync fires properly?
I have just got a 45 and 60 flash after years with Godox. I do love the Sony flashes special the 45 as it's so small and light. Im often shooting at f1.4 so I don't need a lot of flash power. The two things I don't like are the AA batteries a huge backward step from the Godox batteries but even worse is not battery level indicator on the flash. That seems crazy to me. I know it tells you when they are low but a level indicator would really help. So I find myself recharging after every shoot even if the flash has only been used a few times just to be safe. With Good I could jo 4-6 jobs without recharging.
It would be nice if the HVL flashes took the same Z-Series battery that the camera uses. It is one of the more than 100 recommendations I have made to Sony Japan.
Hi mate, as I'm new to flash photography this has helped me so much. I have two F28RM's but struggling to use them (until this video) but I primarily shoot in aperture priority mode. When using the flash on TTL mode with AP the flash fires still but the iso can still be rather high, I know in AP the iso is set to auto but other than switching to manual is there a way through the flash to get the iso down? Thank you

Thank you for your videos! I'm a amateur who used to use Canon until about 5 years ago. I have an A7ii, and recently got an A7iii: You've videos have made me a solid Sony user. (I plan to use my A7iii with a 50mm and a Godox TT350s next weekend at a family wedding. I want to use it the flash for fill lighting only at the reception.) On the A7iii , menu 1, page 11/14 "Exp.comp.set": Should I use Ambient&flash or Ambient only? Which of your videos would you suggest I watch?
Hi, very useful video as usual thanks. The external flash setting do not work for Godox flash? One need to have sony flashes to control them from camera monitor?
Hey mark loved your videos! Im using sony a7c I often struggle with focus when i kill the ambient light ! As everything goes black my camera hunts for the subject ! How can i bypass this issue ?
Good explanation. What mode of the camera we can use TTL function of on camera flash. If we are using in auto mode. Does flash should fire twice. Thanks
Sometimes a flash will fire a pre-flash but this depends on your make of flash and your flash settings. TTL is usually the default settings so long as your flash is compatible and talking to the camera. You can then use any mode but be careful not to exceed the maximum sync speed of the camera if you don't have High Speed Sync enabled.
I am a bit confused, at the Ratio Value ( 10.00min ) you are talking about A :1/8 , B :1/1 and C: 4/1. Flash power. But isn't it A 8/13, B: 1/13 and C: 1/4 flash power. So in this case A with the strongest flash output. And B the least?
1 is the main flash in TTL - every other number is a fraction of 1 ...so 4 is 1/4 of the power of the channel set to 1. Test to verify what I am saying is correct but you could just take my word for it.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Hi Mark thanks for your reply , still confused, I tested it from my FA-WRC1M. Sony's Flash options are designed to work hand-in-glove with Sony flash units. Wireless on would be what your would be using if your were communicating to an off-camera Sony flash unit. You are at the mercy of Godox's configuration settings and whether they designed their flash units to work with Sony's menus. Sounds like this wasn't the case in this instance.

I dont want to reach out and manually shut off the flashes every time, I need an option in the A1? please advise! regards Marcus
Sony cameras are set up to talk to Sony flashes - communication may be compromised when using non-Sony flashes, as the manufacturer may not have designed them to talk specifically with Sony cameras. I expect your ‘external flash settings’ menu could be ‘greyed out’ which could seriously limit what the camera can tell the flash units to do. Consult the Inon ambassador to see what communication is available to you.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Hello Mark, thanks for the reply. Yes, I understand that the camera only can communicate with Sony flashes. Sorry I'm late, so if i had the Sony HVL-F28RM I wouldn't need the FA-WRC1M to connect with other Sony Flashes......@ 8:33min can this be done with the Sony A7 2014 Model (3.20) update (of course i know the Camera Display are quite different) ???
Your camera probably doesn't have the External Flash settings menu to allow you to talk to the HVL-F28RM flash. You would need one of the larger RM flashes to act as commander, e.g., HVL-F46RM
Ok,.thanks@@AlphaCreativeSkills
Hi Mark, i have issue with sony iv and godox v1. When i press the shutter the flash firing twice. Why is that ? I turned off red eye.
I think that is a godox issue and nothing to do with the flash settings of the camera. Please consult your Godox dealer or a Godox Ambassador.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills thanks for response. I just updated the flash and for now it works fine 👍
Hi Mark just one question I bought a Sony a1 and I used on hss but I have banding and I don’t found the efc shutter in the menu system to turn on can u help me please thanks Matt
I am not aware of an option to turn off e-front curtain shutter on the A1. Banding is usually removedly using the Anti-Flicker settings or the variable shutter. I haven't experienced any banding with the flash units I use on the A1.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Hi Mark Sony A1 don’t have anymore efcs options in menu when I shoot on hss 1/8000 on mechanical shutter is bad with electronic shutter is better and I use godox ad 200 or ad 300 flash, I played with anti- flicker options but don’t change much on my a7r4 or a7r3 I turned off the efcs and everything was fine now Sony in this a1 model the efcs always is on just in this case what we can do ,if u can make a video about this issue be great. I search all TH-cam and nobody have a video about this issue thanks for your help Matthew from Hungary
Hi Mark, by any chance, do you know of an issue where the camera will display dark images without a flash on the camera itself? Currently my A74 is not letting me change exposure and such, because for what I am assuming is because it is registering a flash that is there. Any ideas?
I am not aware of any such problem- even when a flash is attached, the default setting is ‘Fill-Flash’ which aims to provide an acceptable exposure using the ambient light only.
Hi Kyle, I get this problem, i.e. I can't set my aperture with the Flashgun on (Hahnel flash gun) Did you solve this ?
@@mouthwash41 it seems to now be a 50:50 shot. I’ll get lucky if I get 50 shots consistently without issues
@@kjgfly thanks. It's strange, I've now attached the Flash gun to my older Sony A74 and it works fine on there, ie it lets me use the aperture and doesn't affect my viewing screen. I've changed more settings on my older camera so I now just need to work out which settings change have helped.
HSS question; new a7s iii + godox ad400 + xpro-s godox trigger for Sony. For some reason I can't shoot high speed sync with this combo. Anyone else have this setup? Why can't I go past 1/250 ?
I don’t have Godox gear and using HSS on the Sony gear is never an issue
I cant find flash in expuse/color settings
Maybe you are using an older Sony camera with the older menus.
How to go in camera shutter above 250
Use High Speed Sync (HSS). This will, however, dramatically decrease the power of the flash output.
The flash will work perfectly with your camera. Newer Alpha models have the option for External Flash Settings in the Flash menu and A1 owners have the option of using their electronic shutter when using this flash at higher frames per second.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks
Sony flashes are nice but they too damn expensive haha! Godox is King. I'm still loyal to Sony though 🤣
Everything is cheaper if it is made and distributed by a Chinese manufacturer.
had Godox for years, switched to Sony lately, better exposure, better skin tones, for me worth the price as a wedding shooter; still using the AD300 for off camera work
