    Great tips. I like the one of dipping the vial in RO water before wiping. And ok I will buy the lint free cloth. String the vial in RO water is also a great idea 👍

    Another excellent video - adding to it re: Hanna thermometer - it's also good for checking Apex temp probe accuracy. Trust me, after time they DO need to be checked and recalibrated.

    I use the Hanna salinity checker which also has a thermometer. An excellent way to quickly and easily verify your refractometer and your thermo controller/probe

    When going from 1 reagent to the next, its always good to check the same sample against both. I usually know when I'm down to my last 3-5 test, which is when I'll usually break out the new reagent and see if there's a difference. I've never had a huge difference between the 2, but know afew reefers who have, which is why I always check just in case. You can call that tip 12 👉

    I’m so glad I got a Hanna temp checker. My apex temp prob just recently started to creep up. It got to 3+ degrees above actual. It won’t stay calibrated. I’ll lower back to actual(using Hanna)but it only takes a day or so for it to creep back up. If I didn’t have my ink bird and Hanna to reference to I would have never known.
    FYI ink bird and Hanna are only .1 degree different from each other.

    I HATE trying to figure out if the color is one vs another most of them look exactly the same to me or they are so close I can’t really tell, and it always looks different in different light but witch light do I trust? This is why is use the checkers because when you think about it it’s actually MORE accurate since you don’t have to discern color differences you take that part of human error out of the equation

    I LOVE the url phosphate and alk! I dont chek calcium or mag as much as I should so was thinking of buying these for calcium and mg! I hate red seas test and hate titrating tests in general! How easy are the mag and calcium? I am surprised you didint recommend the hanna salinity checker! I love mine and it doubles as a temperature checker! It makes water changes so much easier and also matching the temp at the same time! I cant ever imagine going back to a refractometer!

      No, don't do that with most home dish washing detergents. A lot will contain compounds which can etch glass. You'd need a glass specific one, which is what's likely used in your lab. (At least that's the case in mine).

    How would you rate the thermomenter on the Salinity checker?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty good! We've found them to be within the advertised +/- 1 degree F range when comparing to other thermometers. If you want to buy something specifically for temperature, however, I would go with Hanna's CheckTemp thermometer instead.

    I just watched you rant on a recent video about calcium checker. You're using that microliter pipet wrong. You need the tip to go on it, and then you put the tip just under the surface of the water and push down to the first resistance level and draw back up. Water lever should hit the second line on the pipette tip. Then push down to the first and then second pressure level on the plumger to get every last bit out of the tip.

    So if you have amonia in your water..after a 9 stage rodi (7+inline sediment b4 booster & inline carbon b4 triple resin)...then what?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check out this video for some info and ways to solve for this issue. I'm surprised this topic doesn't come up more often because removing ammonia is actually more difficult than most reefers think.

    • @BRStv

      Unfortunately, Hanna does not make a saltwater version of their ammonia checker. At least, not yet.

    Don't get me wrong I like the Hanna checkers but after five months and my alkalinity checker not working properly I'm pretty pissed off these electronic Checkers are nice but when they have a problem or error codes i try everything it still got a problem after 5 months you must be kidding 50 bucks and this thing doesn't even last a couple years it's a joke I pity the people who buy the Marine master at 395 and have a problem with that unit. In my opinion they are not made to last. Going back ot salifert

  • @Starganderfish
    @Starganderfish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The biggest mistake with some of the Hanna checkers is getting them at all. Alkalinity and Phosphate checkers are great but the various NItrate tests range from annoyingly slow to just bloody awful. Calcium test is completely dependant on having an ultra-pure RO/DI sample to test against so results are almost certainly going to be off unless you are using store bought distilled water to calibrate. And the Ammonia checker? Really? Once your cycle is complete you shouldn't have ANY ammonia in the tank. Why the heck would you pay $50 plus reagent costs to occasionally test your RO/DI water?

    OK this is mostly good advice but look I have to call BS on one particular part of it...chloramines in RO+DI output? Have you ever actually seen this on a consumer grade "5-6 stage" setup? Like every modern system no matter the scale has a sediment filter plus two carbon blocks. No, an RO membrane by itself doesn't filter chloramine super well, but if you have an RO membrane exposed to raw inflow it'll last a week or two max lol. Any filter that lets chloramines though is gonna have a bad time for other reasons...
