I found this video randomly on the internet 17 years ago. It was in Quicktime format and definitely low-resolution by today's standards. TH-cam was just in it's infancy and this video was my first post. I loved Vast and still do 17 years later. This was long overdue, by the way.
If someone could upload a nice, crisp HD version of this, I'd be eternally grateful. Hands down one of my favourite music videos, and it definetly deserves it.

Was feeling nostalgic....looked this up...had the pleasure of seeing VAST / Jon Crosby live twice in London. Absolutely awesome even after all these years.

This song will resonate with anyone who has ever been abused... God, when I was going through the worst of it I discovered this song and was like holy shit, really helped me feel better about what was happening. I genuinely feel this is the mindset of a lot of people... We all have it in us to become addicted to intensity, or to mistake intensity for love. But once we realize that's what's happening we can choose to walk away from it. Yes, love is the most intense thing, but it is a mistake to draw the conclusion that therefore, if it feels intense, it must be love... Love is supposed to feel good, open, expansive. In fact the more time passes the more I'm convinced that love is not supposed to feel intense, even though it is the most powerful force out there. More like a gentle unfolding of the self, not a rush towards completion...
The weird part about being abused is that it creates a very strange dynamic where you almost perceive your abuser as actually _caring_ for you, because there's nobody else who takes such drastic measures to 'correct' your behavior as they do. It's a really bizarre dynamic that's almost impossible to explain to someone who hasn't been abused because logically, you know it makes no sense but you can't help but _feel_ that it's true on an emotional level.
@@CopiousDoinksLLC yess 🔥🔥🔥 Like we think no one else will put up with our sh*t... but the sh*t we do is just exist in a way that’s different to most people. Wishing you healing and peace... 💗
Great comment. After my abuser held me for 27 years, he abandoned me. I actually tried to get him back. It was the only thing I knew, since high school.
Well, yeah, that 'intensity' is so true ... but, unlike the story in this VAST video, the ultra-violence doesn't always manifest itself as physical violence and/ or murder. The cruelest violence can be purely and INTENSELY psychological in nature. Getting hit either hurts you or kills you ... but it is over a lot faster than suffering years of intense mind & spirit torture .... and weirdly thinking your persecutor loves you somehow all the while.
Jeeze, I went to look up the song's meaning from viewers or some sort of interpretation but gat dayam, well spoken Tessa hahaha. This hit me hard from past experience and something I connect with on an almost sacred, personal level. Thank you for the time to comment and express this. It's REALLY good and I hope for your sake that you're actively, already or in the works of becoming a writer in some sense of the word.
One of the best synth lines in any song ever. Iconic. Got to see VAST live about 12 years ago and it was one of the best shows I've seen. Small venue, super intimate and they killed it.
I absolutely adore how much that sentence can go both ways so far.... Either he loves her *SOOOOO MUCH* .... that she should run away.... or... there is not even the most minor feelings for her in which.... she should run away..... Basically this describes me on all of my first dates... I either feel completely nothing for them and they are just meat sacks for my amusement, or I care about them so much, I shudder to think of tainting their pristine world with my guttural gritty reality.
@@dementare So you would think! I think this song is about borderline personality disorder and codependency. I've met those women, quite a few. First they idealize you, enjoy your attention and as soon as you get closer and your connections gets deeper, they'll run away. Out of the blue. Or they devalue you, because they are very instable due to trauma and a minor thing will trigger them. Things like you getting out of work too late for their liking. I had that. goddamn...PERFECT song structure, perfect vocals and delivery, love the lyrics, brilliant video, I loved this song when I was 15, but I appreciate it even more now
I've loved this clip since I first saw it back at the tender age of 15... I think the reason I love it is because it's so ambiguous; it tells a story but it doesn't quite tell _the whole_ story. It leaves enough up to the viewer to make multiple viewings interesting. To whit: Is it a recollection of a horrible serial killer's latest crime or is it simply the wandering mind of a taxi driver taking a pretty (and slightly intoxicated) girl home on a particularly long fare? Is it the story of a man who is sadistic and enjoys the pain and suffering he wreaks on others, or is it the tale of a tortured soul who secretly craves his own misery and self-loathing, and punishment for the perceived wrongs he's committed? Is it a film clip about a particularly dark-sounding song, or is it a short film that describes the psychology behind the loneliness of the modern working man, desperate for some semblance of control over his own life, to the point where he will either create fantasies in his own mind or completely lose it altogether? Truly an underrated masterpiece of a film clip, and I'm really annoyed that it got censored, tbh. This is the sort of stuff that should have been a part of Film School 101. Great style, great direction, great everything. Not to mention, VAST were an amazing band.
It's deliberate, to shift conceptions and startle the viewer; it begins with images to put one in the mindset of the woman being the one in danger from what is to come - but she's the one who sings, she's the one, unexpectedly, with the power. It turns the preconceptions of the viewer on their heads.

I think it's about the mindset of a serial killer. The girl in the back is a soon to be victim of his. In his mind, she is Riding Hood and he is the big bad wolf. The other girls are his past victims. The scissors is how he kills them. The girl goes from soon to be victim to past victim. (Her hair is cut and her eye is stabbed out.) He kills them in the woods. (One victim is on the stump.) The old woman is the killer's cause of his killing spree. His issues are with her.
For me, the young beautiful woman (intentionally dressed in a somewhat childish outfit) turns ugly after he rapes and kills her. After this, she has lost her "purity" in his eyes, becoming ugly, old and tainted. What she does to the doll is the same he did to her. The gingerbread house seems to represent his own guilt, with hands trying to grab at him, and eyes everywhere.
I can't believe how beatuiful the music and the actress is and the depth of horror that is encapsulated in this piece of art. It made me think of Twin Peaks, NIN and Aphex Twin and even "Neon Genesis Evangelion". How can something this depressing also pump you up at the same time. When I listen to NIN I get that Trent was suffering but this is on a completely different level. There is no escaping how disturbing yet inspiring this is. Another thing that gets me is that almost 24 years ago I head that song "free" by Vast probably on MTV. It was weird but the vocals where amazing, raw and soulful, unusually powerful and original. That memories was so deeply etched into my brain that I finally decided to research the band and stumbled upon this. This singer can sing, yet his voice is so understated here. He figured out his talent and creativity, cultivated it and used it, to create something so amazing that a quarter of a century later people are still blown away and inspired.
the video portrays the lyrics and music perfectly. my favourite part is when the girls jump, it is such a good combination with the music at that point.
Mmmm. One of the cooler dirty bass line songs I've heard. Perfect background for late night driving I've found. That, and some nice imagery just from the music/lyrics. Love the fact that the video matches the feel of the sounds.
+Lisa Schwalbach you do realize that it can be about both, rape and bad relationships, right. like for instance, when rape occurs within a bad relationship, right. you do realize that that happens, right.
My first relationship, she introduced me to the band too. Of course only if you take the "I didn't really love you" part ironically, which given the prior verses it probably is.
I tried explaining the same thing ,pretty much all of what you wrote ,some people deny that these elements are present in the video.finally nice to see someone agrees a true video critic.
You're made of my rib bone, baby You're made of my sin And I can't tell where your lust ends And where your love begins Ooh, I didn't want to hurt you, baby I didn't want to hurt you I didn't want to hurt you But you're pretty when you cry And the moon gives me permission And I enter through her eyes She's losing her virginity And all her will to compromise Ooh, I didn't want to hurt you, baby I didn't want to hurt you I didn't want to hurt you But you're pretty when you cry Ooh, I didn't want to fuck you, baby I didn't want to fuck you I didn't want to fuck you But you're pretty when you're mine And I didn't really love you, baby I didn't really love you I didn't really love you But I'm pretty when I lie You hurt me, baby I hurt you, baby Ooh, if you knew how much I loved you You would run away (How can you do this to me, now?) But when I treat you bad It always makes you want to stay (How can you do this to me, now?) Ooh, I didn't want to hurt you, baby I didn't want to hurt you, baby I didn't want to hurt you, baby! +Diego Santamaria I'm a female that also loves this song. I will say though, I heard it on the radio several times before I saw the actual video -if that makes any sense as to why it would make a difference. But the video didn't turn me away from it- I still love the "menacing feeling" of the song.

mal ehrlich- ich hätte nie diesen geilen Song gefunden, wenn der nicht im Film wir sind die nacht vorkam- aber echt respekt der song is klasse
turn it up with good headphones and if your heartbeat syncs to the bass it feels like the tempo of fear
this video....this song....both morbidly beautiful.
the video portrays the lyrics and music perfectly.
my favourite part is when the girls jump, it is such a good combination with the music at that point.
Wir sind die Nacht und Vast- passen einfach nur hammer geil zusammen
Whose still listening to this in 2019
2021
Aaayyeee 2021 baby
2025
This video is easily considered a piece of art.
Totally bizarre & creepy but compelling and mesmerizing.
You want to be reviled by it but can't help but love it
Thank you, thank you, I'm here all week
most underrated band ever, Chris Cunningham and Aphex lost children.....RIP
superb video, and fantastic to finally see the uncut version after all these years.
What does Rammstein and VAST had in common in the vid?
Same director :D
omg fucking zoki directed this???? Ill be damned, VAST knows what theyre doing
awesome....
Mmmm. One of the cooler dirty bass line songs I've heard. Perfect background for late night driving I've found. That, and some nice imagery just from the music/lyrics. Love the fact that the video matches the feel of the sounds.
VAST forever!!
One of the sickest videos I have seen in years! Absolutly love it!!!
Thanks for making Little Red Ridinghood seem really creepy.
Kristina Warrior Princess It always was.
Absolut genial!! und das schon seit 12 Jahren!!
~12 years ago. time sure goes by fast.
Im obsessed with white room sequence. His face expression is amazing.
This song is the story of my marriage. I discovered this song after I got away.
you do realize this song is about rape and not bad relationships right
+Lisa Schwalbach you do realize that it can be about both, rape and bad relationships, right. like for instance, when rape occurs within a bad relationship, right. you do realize that that happens, right.
what do you mean? thats a fucked up thing to say.
My first relationship, she introduced me to the band too. Of course only if you take the "I didn't really love you" part ironically, which given the prior verses it probably is.
NDpanda same here..
Takes me back to the eighties in the club. Videos were just the cover for awesome dance stuff. Remember MTV back in the day?
Very powerful song no doubt about it.
I tried explaining the same thing ,pretty much all of what you wrote ,some people deny that these elements are present in the video.finally nice to see someone agrees a true video critic.
You're made of my rib bone, baby
You're made of my sin
And I can't tell where your lust ends
And where your love begins
Ooh, I didn't want to hurt you, baby
I didn't want to hurt you
I didn't want to hurt you
But you're pretty when you cry
And the moon gives me permission
And I enter through her eyes
She's losing her virginity
And all her will to compromise
Ooh, I didn't want to hurt you, baby
I didn't want to hurt you
I didn't want to hurt you
But you're pretty when you cry
Ooh, I didn't want to fuck you, baby
I didn't want to fuck you
I didn't want to fuck you
But you're pretty when you're mine
And I didn't really love you, baby
I didn't really love you
I didn't really love you
But I'm pretty when I lie
You hurt me, baby
I hurt you, baby
Ooh, if you knew how much I loved you
You would run away
(How can you do this to me, now?)
But when I treat you bad
It always makes you want to stay
(How can you do this to me, now?)
Ooh, I didn't want to hurt you, baby
I didn't want to hurt you, baby
I didn't want to hurt you, baby!
I didn't want to hurt you, baby!
💚
One of the better videos I have seen. A great song as well.

my husband told me Im sick cause I love this song. hahahhahahhahhah
this song is powerful, not every person understand its lyrics.
+ANALITIK- RU i only translated some lyrics, he is a conservative one indeed. majority of people is really boring. *sigh*
LoveTheKeyOfLife Its really interesting a woman that likes this, i think that u are interesting.
I kinda do too we are the night brought me here
+Diego Santamaria I'm a female that also loves this song. I will say though, I heard it on the radio several times before I saw the actual video -if that makes any sense as to why it would make a difference. But the video didn't turn me away from it- I still love the "menacing feeling" of the song.
this song is so dark and twisted I cant help but keep watching it its like a well put nightmare. reminds me of my goth days
