I went to beauty school in the 70s. That’s how we cut hair then. Not random … there is a guide she cut in first. The guide falls away and your fingers is where you cut.

My grandma went to the salon each week to have her hair washed and set. She never washed her hair herself. She had a standing weekly appointment. Nothing kept her from that appointment.

Some of those places in my area went unisex.. I went to one ( but no rollers or perms! ) Although they did shampoo me .. still the same on the inside.. old school grandma beauty shop decor and equipment.. it was rather awkward for me being a 20 yr old college guy surrounded by geriatric ladies in rollers and rods .. even the women shampooing and cutting my hair were older than my grandmother.. but I must say they did a better job than the barber.. and cheaper .

If you listen to enough of this channels content you will know that red nail polish and red lipstick were majorly frowned upon I mean don’t get me wrong you could pull off red if you had a coloring for it but if you’re pale you’re screwed
I know because I was raised with my grandmother if I ever tried to wear red outside the house she’d kill me even as I got older and didn’t live with her anymore it would’ve been my head on a pike if I had attempted to wear that

I feel there may be a great underestimate the tools and tricks 50's women have, as well as who you really are. It's one thing how others perceive you, it's another to comparing oneself to an ever changing standard subjectively. Personal opinion: don't judge one by their appearance, but by their action. If you can improve, even just the slightest change, that's a step closer to a better version of you. And now is the earliest opportunity.

My mother grew up in the 50s and I swear the hair salon guys and gals even at the nail Salon LOVE HER. In her 70s and in her little wheel chair she still gets her hair shampooed and set or styled every Friday. Every 3 weeks her nails are done even if they are short she gets them done with the dip powder whether she goes anywhere or not. Even with the Coronavirus stuck at home she begs me to take her. I tell her what's the point because no one will see her and she can't go to church right now and she responds with, "Ruth, don't be crazy, you never know who might come to visit me". I'm in my 30s and my husband in his 40s and he says, "just take her, it makes her happy and in her day women were always well dressed, hair done, full on makeup, and nails done". I am 37 and I always wear a blouse and flat shoes when going to the cinema or a restaurant and full on makeup. I never realized that most Millennials don't do that until someone pointed it out. I realized I do this because my parents grew up in the 1940s and 1950s. I never thought it strange that living in the South with 100 degree weather I was still wearing a proper ladies blouse with black slacks or knit pants and would dress up just to go to the grocery store. I have noticed that when little kids see me they are always respectful and move out of my way while shopping and if they need help reaching something they will ask me and not other people. I used to wonder that it was because I had a friendly face and am very short, so close to their level, but an older once told me it's because of the way I'm dressed they think I'm safe and approachable because little kids notice stuff like that. Anytime we are at the zoo and a child is lost they walk right up to my husband and I crying with their little hands outstretched wanting us to pick them up. Even at the zoo, no joke, on a rented electric wheel chair in Dallas, TX my mother has her full on makeup, hair done, nails, and wears a fur coat in November while we are at the zoo.😎 she dresses up to see the animals and makes my husband wear nice dress up shoes that he wears after we leave the zoo so that he looks "Appropriate" when we leave the zoo to go to a restaurant. No joke!! My husband is from Morocco and has had to learn to slightly dress up when he takes mom out because she wants him to dress like a "man" of his "age" and swears up and down people will take him more seriously. To be honest, I think she might be right. People do judge you without realizing it based on your outer appearance.

There are good men stylists and bad ones just like there are good & bad women stylists. And not all of the males are gay.
Back when I was in my early 20s & couldn't afford a decent stylist, I ran into a Fantastic Sam's to get my hair trimmed. The male stylist kept "accidentally" rubbing himself against me. I was so grossed out. I'd move in the seat but it would keep happening.
I was too young and naive and timid to do anything at the time. I knew he was doing it intentionally but figured there was no way to prove it.
I wish I had the confidence I have now that I'm older. I would have gotten out of that chair immediately and reported him to his manager and maybe even the police. It may not have come to anything as it would just be a case of he said/she said, but at the very least I would have stood up to him. I probably wasn't the first person he'd done that too nor the last.

Speaking of white uniforms and shoes..In college I had tried a unisex salon for the first time.. I think the place was a chain beauty shops for the grandmas to get their weekly wash and sets that decided to go unisex .. it still looked that way inside looking at the decor and equipment very 70s anyways .. there were several older women working there And a few were in the old school uniforms of white pink or light blue with the white shoes. I remember one gave me a shampoo first then another one cut my hair. Different experience from a barber shop I never had a beautician cut my hair but she did an excellent job.
